Abstract

There are only few places in the world which still have the analogy materials that could connect two far different era, and one of them is Papua. From the linguistics aspect, Papua has approximately 300 tribes, such as Dani, Asmat, Marind-Anim, Hattam, Ekagi, and Sentani. From those hundreds tribes, the ethnoarchaeological researches in Papua have explored some aspects of analogy-archaeology materials, such as: religion, totem and symbol, habitation, governmental system, and ethnic-musicology. Based on the past 5 years (2005-2009) research, it is turned out that the research programs which have the tendency on ethnoarchaeology reached 75% or 18 from 24, though the effort on bringing the ’analogy’ materials to be analyzed deeply (thick description) is still facing several problems, particularly on human resources, methodology, and planning socialization aspects. Therefore, the RIPAN research format review surely needs to be done so that in the future it could be applied by the archaeologists.

Abstract

Papua has a strategic location in the western Pacific region, as a connector between South East Asia and Pacific Region that makes it a strategic place to transit from both west and east. On 1500 to 1000 BC there were a new wave of migration from Austronesia. The colonist left a vivid track about their journey through ocean and islands which can be seen form their archaeological sites. These sites were found in Admiralty island on the north of New Guinea to the east of Samoa island on West Polynesia. The strongest evidence on the migration of the Austronesian in Pacific is the language. The imigrant from Austronesia who came to Pacific settled accross the coastal area of north Papua. The influence of Austronesian culture in Papua that is only on north coast Papua, the Cendrawasih bay and the Bird’s Head Peninsula is particularly the Melanesian language, which actually a development of local Papua language influenced by the Austronesian language. Other influence they made is the tradition of the making and utilization of vessels. It is because this tradition was widely unknown in mid Papua mountains and south-coast Papua. Then the other Austronesian characteristics are the structured hierarchical organization, which applied hereditary and tattoo tradition.

Abstract

The presence of foreign-made ceramics in Papua, especially in Biak Island, has shown that historically before the 15th century Papua has made contact with foreign countries, such as the merchants from China, Spain and Portugal. The name Nova Guinea given to Irian by the sailor from Spain is also shown that this land has made contact with foreigners. Other than foreign influence, it is admitted that the Biak community has sailed a long way to the west of Maluku, Tidore and Halmahera. They’re known as excellent seamen who sailed across the vast ocean from North-Coast of Papua to the Bird’s Head Peninsula and Raja Ampat Islands. On their way back home, most of the time they brought back the foreign-made ceramics or as the Biak community said “benbepon” and textile “sananpun”. As a result, their contact with foreign countries has made changes in material life of Biak community.

Abstract

The Process of vessels making in Mansinam site was not far too different with other places in Indonesia: using clay as the basic material. The vessel making was a woman’s work, started from clay gathering to firing process. Based on the observation of the edge shape, it is predicted that the vessels found in Mansinam Island belongs to the type of pot. The observation on the core shows that on the process of making, the firing was opened and not spread evenly. Pot was used for cooking and keeping food. The vessels from Mansinan Island has spread vast through trade and barter to Wandamen coastal area, Biak Numfor islands, Bird’s Head Peninsula coastal areas and Raja Ampat Islands.
