Abstract

This paper aims to explain the phenomenon of the fragility of the concept of ethnic identity in a multicultural society. Ethnic identity does not exclusively refer to something that is permanently attached to an individual. Rather, it also has to do with something that experiences development and transformation on the basis of the individual’s religious belief (religion). Indeed, ethnic identity oftentimes is associated with differences in race, religion, birthplace, and historical background. These differences, however, do not mater when individuals convert to Islam. Conversion to Islam as a consequence affects the extent to which individuals’ different ethnic identity is recognized as part of other ethnic identities. We conducted this study among ethnic Dayaks, Malays and Chinese in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. Data were obtained by means of interviews, observation and documentation. The main finding of the study reveals that ethnic backgrounds did not play a convincing role in the practice of multilateral social interactions. In this context, ethno-religious similarity more so than other factors easily unite members of ethnic groups. Here then lies the cycle of ethnicity that has returned to the classical phase wherein ethnic formation is not only determined by historical background, territory, and blood relations, but also religion.

Abstract

Dakwah (English: Preaching) by Kiai (English: Javanese terminology referring to a Muslim cleric) commonly takes place in mosques, Islamic Boarding Schools, Majlis Taklim, or other Islamic religious forums. The dakwah is practiced mostly by inviting adherents of Islam to be a truly Muslim (Muslim Kaffah), or evoking non-Muslims to convert their religion into Islam for the sake of their salvation in the hereafter. However, a kiai in Yogyakarta who is familiarly called Kiai Muhaimin has practiced a unique style of dakwah. He preaches Islam not only in his in-group communities and habitual places but also in churches and other religious places of worship. His dakwah thus has been reaching a wide range of places of worship of besides Islamic ones. He did not call for non-Muslims to convert to Islam. Rather, he has promoted tolerance and a better understanding of pluralism. Likewise, he aims his religious standpoints on Islam in Muslim communities for seeding actual pluralism among Muslims. He has formulated a conceptual framework of Islamic moderate dakwah as a philosophical basis for building tolerance and coexistence in Indonesian multicultural society and socio-religious life. Through the organization he established, i.e., FPUB (Interfaith Brotherhood Forum), he put into practice such an Islamic moderation.

Abstract

This article aims to explain dakwah in the fiction novel Kyai Joksin Kyai Tanpa Pesantren by Imam Sibawaih el-Hasany. A literary work more often than not contains messages the author wants to convey. Religious moral messages are often presented in the form of a novel, with the goal of inspiring the readers. Novel Kyai Joksin Kyai Tanpa Pesantren is one of the literary works full of religious messages, which are particularly connected to dakwah. Through the lens of dakwah theory, this study focuses on the method of dakwah used by Kyai Joksin. This study concludes that Novel Kyai Joksin Kyai Tanpa Pesantren is a narrative about the journey of a kyai who has no pesantren (English: Islamic boarding school). Despite this drawback, but the preaching of the kai turns out to be effective. This effectiveness resides upon the methods of the dakwah the kyai applied which are characterised by politeness and gentleness, uswatun hasanah, advice, wills, wisdom, justice, and dialogue.

Abstract

The goal of this research was to briefly describe the dynamics of tarekat organizations in Indonesia since the establishment of Ahl al-Tariqah al-Mu'tabarah al-Indonesi (JATMI, 1957) and Jam'iyyah al-Thariqah al-Mu'tabarah al-Nahdliyah (JATMAN), 1979) in Java, which was followed by that of the Indonesian Tarekat Ulama Council in Solok, West Sumatra (2016). The method of the current research is a literature review using content analysis techniques. The main findings are threefold, with the first suggesting how the criteria for tarekat maturity are needed in the organization of the tarekat. The second finding shows that the Sufism organization (tarekat) of the JATMI Nusantara in 1957 was prompted by the Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TQN). Meanwhile, the internal conflict among Jatmi's leaders set into motion the establishment of a new institution which has a similar movement mission, i.e., JATMAN in 20 Early Rabbi of 1337 H / 10 October 1985 AD in Tegalrejo, Magelang, Central Java. The third finding shows that the dynamics of the organization have colored the Ulama institutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper examines Sufism of urban society as a trend of popular Islamic culture in millennial society. Understanding Sufism is a foundation of searching for the alternative life problem solutions, which are currently criticized as being merely temporary and reactionary. Sufism develops from the private sphere into a popular Islamic culture through which to enhance social piety. This popular Islamic culture is a form of repetitive life habits (habitus) that is accepted collectively as a form of general habit. The formation of Sufism habits among urban society initiates the creation of urban Sufism symbols such as piety, hijab, robe, turban, sarong and others. This phenomenon gives birth to how the concepts and practices of Sufism are transformed by members of a tariqa group such as the Tarekat Naqsabandiyah Haqqani Pekalongan. Therefore, the focus of this paper is twofold. The first focus is on the discussion about the way the conventional Sufism transforms into urban Sufism. This transformation denotes a phenomenon of urban Sufism wherein a kiai (English: Javanese terminology referring to a Muslim cleric) acts as an agent of the social transformation in the Naqsabandiyah Haqqani in Pekalongan. The second focus is on the discussion about urban Sufism as a popular symbol of Islam in the millennial era.

Abstract

This article will address interesting facts about the exclusivity of theology which appeared in the thoughts of KH. Ahmad Rifa’i (Batang) in the colonial era. The study will focus on the concept of faith initiated by Kiai Rifa'i in his works. Data was obtained from the works of Kiai Rifa'i who taught the students. These data will be analyzed by a phenomenological approach with reference to the theological and philosophical facts that characterize the thoughts of Kiai Rifa’i. The results of the study indicate that the theological exclusivity in the thinking of Kiai Rifa'i was formed because of the polarization of the quality of human faith is divided into three: (1) Iman Maqbul, is the faith of believers who only commit minor sins; (2) Iman Mauqūf, is the faith of those who commit the great sin of the wicked causes; (3) Iman Mardūd, the faith of the hypocrites and those who commit the great sins of the infidelity causes. From the trilogy of faith, several issues of fiqh are often punished by Kiai Rifa'i with exclusive conclusions such as in marriages and Friday Prayers (Shalat Jum’at) which according to him are punished illegally, because in those two problems there is the role of people whose quality of faith falls into the category of Mauquf Faith, namely the princes of marriage who want to help the colonial government (Netherlands).

Abstract

This study focuses on Koreksi Tarjamah Harfiyah al-Qur’an Kemenag RI (QTK) by Muhammad Thalib, Amir (Leader) Majelis Mujahidin. Significance of this focus is due only Thalib who is bold and sincere against the authority of Al-Qur’an dan Terjemahnya by The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the RI. This study uses social identity theory and critical discourse analysis. The conclusion of this study says that Thalib’s interpretation or translation, Koreksi QTK and QTT, represent the social identity of Thalib and MM, as his context. Koreksi QTK (and QTT) is not merely a normative religious ritual; it is also the result of Thalib's dialectic in MM context with the socio-political context of Indonesia. Koreksi QTK (and QTT) is a self-affirming social media of Thalib and MM that attempt to illustrate illusively with a more peaceful, harmonious, anti-extremist-jihadist face. Both of these books are also a tool of the ideological campaign and political orientation of MM. The effort of delegitimizing QTK and the inauguration of QTT authority became a vital medium in the effort to sow the ideology and political orientation of MM in Nusantara context.

Abstract

Historically, the discourse of exegesis and ta’wīl does not always go hand in hand. This was the case, especially when the al-Asy’ārī school of thought was in power. In this era, the exegesis had been positioned superior to the ta’wīl whose existence was not only regarded as the Islamic opposition but also the deviation of the truth. In this study, the author attempts to unveil the theological ta’wīl of al-Māturīdī on his magnum opus Ta’wīlat Ahl al-Sunnah and Kitab al-Tawhid. By considering its capability of reconciling traditionalists (Ash'ariyah) with rationalists (Muktazilah), the magnum opus of al-Maturidi’s becomes a research object of the current study. In particular, this study investigates the research object by means of comparative theological and exegesis approaches, with three main findings. The first finding shows that the concept of ta’wīl constructed by al-Māturīdī in his general exegesis seems very loose. The second finding demonstrates that the objectivity of the meaning presented by al-Māturīdī sometimes reduces due to its theological views which appear subjective. The third finding reveals a contradiction. On one side, al-Maturidi’s theological view can assuage any ideas that clash with Islam. On another side, however, al-Māturīdī tried to base the doctrine of Sunni theology.

Deparating from the emergence of the contestation over the use of veils in Indonesia, this study was aimed to explore the problematic (debate)of the use of the veil and how the contestation of interpretation authority from the circles works in it. This study employed a historical approach. The result of this study shows that: (1)the problematic(debate)of veil can be classification in three periods;(i)Classic-medieval period; a fikih expert vs a fikih expert; by monodiciplnier approach (textual)(ii)contemporer period; a islamic expertvsa a islamic expert; by the interdiciplinier approach vs monodiciplinier or textual vs contextual(iii) media period; general society. (2) the problematic (debate) raises two aspect:(i)discontuniuty aspect: a paradigm shifting in a periode between the each other period, (i)continuitas aspect: in spite of totality the problematic (debate) is dissareed paradigm, but the real of theproblematic (debate) is related with the same normative texts.

Abstract

This article discusses the narration of the hadith performed by the companions Abu Abu Sa'i@d Al-Khudri. As a teenager in the days of the prophet, he was referred to as the great narrator of the hadith. The then interesting thing from Sahabat Abu Sa'i@d Al-Khudri is his persistence in narrating the hadith not statistically but dynamically, because according to him the function of the hadith is not only a source of Islamic teachings but also social cultural resources. Through library study method and content analysis using knowledge sociology, it is found that al-Fa@tih{ah narrative of Abu Sa'i@d Al-Khudri has two types of typology, an informative type as a form of teachings of hadith prophets and types of performative embodiments of application or living hadith as a tradition that is not contrary to the hadith of the prophet.
