Abstract

Zijin Chen, ‘the Chinese Keigo Higashino’, is celebrated for reality-oriented detective fiction addressing social issues. Notwithstanding phenomenal screen adaptation, his chef-d’oeuvre The Long Night, along with a series entitled To Murder Government Officials manifest his conspicuous stances pertaining to homosexuality and women. To be more specific, characters in his narratives are prone to regard homosexual men and relationships with disdain, and exhibit the male gaze and gender stereotypes of women. Although the mentality is not necessarily triggered by homophobia or misogyny, the author might have been impinged upon by outdated policies and stigma and hence is featured by lack of feminist awareness.

Abstract

This study was conducted to compare the similarities and differences that exist in the analytic causative construction in the languages of the Austronesian family represented by the Banyuman Dialect (BD) and the Sino-Tibetan family represented by the West Kalimantan Hakka Dialect (WKHD). This descriptive qualitative research uses the analytical causative theory from Comrie (1989), which aims to analyze the analytic causative construction in BD and WKHD. The results show differences in the number of analytic causative verbs with equivalent meanings in the two languages. Furthermore, there are similarities in analytic causative productivity in both languages. Finally, there are differences in sentence construction between the two languages.

Abstract

This research was based on the phenomenon in school where many students find writing challenging. The students do not know if their writing is correct since they are too shy to ask the teacher when they have problems. In addition, students lack enthusiasm to learn writing because the class was unattractive. This research aimed to find out the teacher’s written feedback in students' written tasks and the factors of good teacher’s written feedback completed by teachers, teacher barriers, and students’ responses to written feedback in the second semester of tenth grade at SMA Islam Athirah 1 Makassar in 2021/2022. This was qualitative research. The data were evaluated utilizing data reduction, data display, and data conclusion. This investigation involved tenth graders at SMA Islam Athirah 1 Makassar. This research sampled 32 students from one class, X IPA 2. The researcher collected data via instruments, interviews, questionnaires, and document examination. From the data analysis, it was observed that the teacher rarely met all three aspects. Many challenges that teachers had in offering written feedback and students lacked reaction in the second semester of tenth grade at SMA Islam Athirah 1 Makassar.

Abstract

One of the essential abilities in learning English is speaking. However, most students believe that speaking English is challenging because they lack vocabulary and are reluctant to express their opinions. Anxiety is a mood that includes fear, hesitation, and worry about events both in the present and the future. This research aimed to find out the factors causing students’ speaking anxiety, the effects of students’ speaking anxiety, and the students’ strategies to reduce their speaking anxiety. The researchers applied a qualitative research design and used observations and interviews. The population of this study was 90 students in the first grade at SMAN 13 Pangkep Regency, and nine students interviewed by the researchers. The results show that two elements contributed to students’ speaking anxiety: linguistic issues (poor pronunciation, vocabulary, and ideas) and non-linguistic issues (lack of self- confidence, lack of preparation, shyness to their peers, and afraid of being laughed at). Speaking anxiety has two different effects on students’ speaking abilities: a facilitating influence that encourages them to talk and a debilitating effect that causes them to stutter, blank out, become afraid, or stumble. The students' use of preparation, avoidance of eye contact, and peer assistance helps them to reduce their speaking anxiety.

Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems that occur in seventh-grade students who have problems in speaking ability and in the method and media used in teaching English. This study aims to determine how effective video blog media is to teach speaking skills. This True-Experimental research was conducted at MTs Muhammadiyah Karangkajen Yogyakarta. The research design consisted of pre-test and post-test design. This study used a simple random sampling technique. The samples consist of 30 students in the experimental class and 30 students in the control class. In the data collection process, a test has been applied. This test has been validated by an expert in the English Education Study Program. After the test has been validated, the research was comducted a pre-test, four treatments, and post-test. Then the data was analyzed using Paired Samples Test with the SPSS 25.0 program. The result showed that the t-count value is 2.023 while the t-table resulted from df (29) and the two-tailed level of significance (0.05) is 1.699. This showed that the use of video blogs in teaching students' speaking skills has proven to be effective. As a result, it can be proven that the use of video blog media is more effective for teaching speaking skills than the use of text books and Power Point media.

Abstract

This article aims to discover the translation of the word auliyâ’ in QS. Al-Mâ’idah Verse 51 on a conservative Islamic website in Indonesia. In addition, to find out the power and discursive practice of the verse and uncover ideology in social practice. The study was qualitative research that used the text published on Portal-islam.id and Voa-islam.com as the primary source. In data analysis, the study applied Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. The study showed that Portal-islam.id and Voa-islam.com translated the word auliyâ’ as leaders. That is motivated by Hamka’s interpretation which prioritizes meaning compared to the reason for the revelation of the verse. For this understanding, conservative Islamic websites produce articles that support the prohibition of non-Muslims from becoming leaders.

Abstract

Speaking for Transactional Functions as a course in English foreign language learning curriculum is essentially needed. This Speaking  class provides students beneficial activities for the English language speaking skills development and give them a lot of experiences in the process of learning in and beyond the classroom and working through a project. This study aims at describing the students’ experiences on transactional speaking projects. Since this research describes the condition that exists, the most appropriate method used in this research is the descriptive method. Seven EFL students become the participants of the research. An interview are used for the data collection. The result of interview is then transcribed.  The responses on the interview show that Students get a lot of benefits from the transactional speaking projects. The projects improve their 21st century skill : communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. It also improves the skill of technology use and English language skills development. Besides the benefits,  the students also face some challenges in doing the project, such as choosing and exchanging the appropriate background for the topic, editing  video, and taking turn in conversation. However, the challenges encourage them to learn and do more for the improvement of their knowledge and behaviour. In short, the students get benefial experiences in the projects.

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify students' difficulties with English speaking. This research used a qualitative method involving six students in the fifth semester of the English department at public university in Kalimantan Utara through purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out with in-depth semi-structured interviews. This study showed that students still experienced some difficulties in speaking English. The first factor was sociocultural;1) family engagement, 2) student's environment, and 3) peer engagement. The second factor was psychological; 4) feeling afraid, and 5) shyness. The third factor was linguistic; 6) local dialect, 7) pronunciation, 8) knowledge of grammatical patterns, 9) lack of vocabulary, and 10) fillers. The fourth factor was world knowledge, 11) topical knowledge, 12. limited learning time, and 13) comprehension. This study contributed to the students' reflection on finding their appropriate learning strategies and language exposure. Besides, the teacher needed to develop professionalism to help students reduce their speaking difficulties.

Abstract

This research describes the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing BIPA book “Sahabatku Indonesia” especially BIPA Levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach by using a content analysis research design. The analysis shows that the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a Common European framework of reference for languages that includes learning, teaching, and language assessment. The CEFR concept is important known and studied by the learners/students and language learners/teachers foreign, especially in the context of learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA). Language Development and Development Agency, through the Center Strategy Development and Language Diplomacy (PPSDK), plays a role important in increasing the function of Indonesian to become an international language. This important role is realized, among others, by supporting language teaching Indonesian for foreign speakers (BIPA) in various countries. One of those supports is the preparation of BIPA teaching materials in the form of “Sahabatku Indonesia” in six book levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Materials and learning tasks are developed on a text-based basis integrated learners can develop their language competence in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing various types of text. In addition, learning materials and assignments are designed in an integrated way to be able to develop Indonesian insight. For evaluation purposes, each unit is equipped with a structured task in the form of exercises.

Abstract

Language as human communication tool plays a substantial as the tool exertion, redemption, and rights fulfillment of the oppressed society. The use of language becomes crucial as a means of discourse on social issues and identity. The protest for women’s rights fulfillment is one of the social issues that gets a lot of attention, both from the demonstration and the discourse used in the movement. Physical abuse led to death which happened to Mahsa Amini in Iran evoked the public's anger which then led to massive protests all around the world. This article aimed to identify the form of solidarity shown in the use of language in the discourse of the liberation of women’s rights specifically in Mahsa Amini’s death case. This research used descriptive-qualitative methodology which used interpretive case study in the protests of Mahsa Amini’s case. The data were in the form of phrases and slogans in English written on the posters used in the protests around the world. The data was collected by searching #MahsaAmini on the search bar of the Instagram application. The data used was only those taken directly from the event of protests. The data then were analyzed by identifying and sorting the speech acts used. Next, the lexical units containing any form of solidarity for the liberation of women’s rights were identified. The result showed that there was a form of solidarity built among the participants of the protests through the identified speech acts.
