Abstract

Abstract. This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the students’ L2 language development. This issue was raised because second language acquisition is one of the most impressive and fascinating aspects of human communication skills. This study was also intended to help students effectively learn and understand the language. This was a descriptive quantitative study. The samples were 158 preservice students in the English Education Department, Universitas Borneo Tarakan. This data was collected using an online questionnaire through google form to indicate the students’ responses on how English as a second language is acquired by the learning experience and was analyzed using factorial analysis (principle componential analysis). This research found that second language development is affected by linguistic factors like vocabulary enrichment, the structure of the native language, and the ability to pronounce words. Besides, non-linguistic factors like cognitive styles, psychological aspects, personality traits, technology use, and age also influenced students’ learning processes and outcomes. It can be shown from personal characteristics and experiences of the learner, social and cultural environment both inside (virtual/ offline meeting) and outside (online assignment/ project/ task-based) of the classroom, the opportunities for communication, access to both oral and written corrective feedback and instruction let by teachers. Those factors were not fully controlled by the teachers but understanding those aspects will make teachers able to consider how students learn English in effective ways to mitigate their learning loss in rapid knowledge growth and technological advancement era. This study reflected teachers’ development on their professionalism and their contribution to the second language acquisition theories. Keywords: Language acquisition and learning, Teacher Professional Development, Linguistics, and Non-linguistics Factors, covid19 pandemic

Abstract

Since Covid-19 was declared a pandemic, educational technology has become trended by playing E-learning. Teachers and students are forced to transform from traditional classes into E-classrooms. However, full e-learning did not give students a massive impact yet, and lately, they have become less motivated since it provided no real communication (Mese & Sevilen 2021). Integrating face-to-face learning (direct interaction) and technology-based learning (digital communication) becomes promising (Garrison &Vaughan, 2008; Rianto, 2020). This study explored the perspectives of 3 pre-service teachers and 27 students towards the blended learning (BL) practices in the EFL context. The setting was the English education department, Universitas Borneo Tarakan. The data were collected using online interviews to gain in-depth information. The findings uncovered that the teachers and students gave positive perspectives to apply this model to the new normal. In addition, BL could reshape the teachers' roles by applying multiple technology use in the teaching and learning process. BL  was also able to broaden students' learning experience and provide them with a technology-based world. This study highlighted some implications, including the need for pre-service teachers' professional development that ultimately will help teachers assist students in succeeding in blended learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Teaching spoken English has been a critical issue in the EFL context. The researchers are focusing on how to improve students' public speaking abilities. Several studies, however, have focused on how teachers build EFL learners' self-confidence before focusing on their speaking skills. Lack of self-confidence makes it difficult for beginners to speak, and it also makes it difficult for teachers to design activities that foster students' self-confidence. In response to this growing demand, this article provides an empirical account of how scripted role-plays are used as an innovative learning design in a private high school setting with a majority of students who are beginners. This research applied the Classroom Action Research study. The scripted role-play intervention was carried out for eight meetings following an action research protocol. Classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with students and the teacher were used to collect data. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyze these data. According to the study's findings, the students had finally gained confidence in public speaking. Being confident allowed students to practice more, which improved their speaking skills. The study's findings have three practical implications. First, increasing opportunities for students to practice speaking should be prioritized in EFL classes. Second, providing scripted role-play for beginner students allows them to easily use the language. Finally, before asking students to improve their speaking skills, teachers should focus on developing their students' self-confidence.

The result of the mentoring is that students' English mastery increased based on the results of the test given and their understanding of how to answer questions accurately. However, it is realized that English language skills have not significantly improved with only brief mentoring, so the lecturers and the school hope that further activities will be held. Abstract

One of the essential skills in teaching English is pronunciation. The listener will only understand the speaker if their pronunciation is correct. Applying English pronunciation instructions to students is an integral part of the language. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the podcast which contains relevant and authentic content for global listening comprehension in language learning. As a technological tool, the “British Council” podcast was integrated for learning English pronunciation at English Education in Universitas Borneo Tarakan. This pre-experimental study involved one class of third-semester students who previously learned pronunciation. Because the calculated Z value was less than the -Z table (-4.809 -1.960) and the p-value was less than (0.000 0.050), the decision was made to reject H0, indicating an average significant difference between the pre-test and post-test based on the measured pronunciation. It presented that integrating the podcast shaped students’ pronunciation and made them more confident. This study sheds light on the role of digital media in determining students' pronunciation and language development. It also provides teachers with alternative media for learning pronunciation in and outside of the classroom.
