Abstract

The inverter is the principal part of the photovoltaic (PV) systems that assures the direct current/alternating current (DC/AC) conversion (PV array is connected directly to an inverter that converts the DC energy produced by the PV array into AC energy that is directly connected to the electric utility). In this paper, we present a simple method for detecting faults that occurred during the operation of the inverter. These types of faults or faults affect the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the photovoltaic system, especially the inverter, which is the main component responsible for the conversion. Hence, we have shown first the faults obtained in the case of the short circuit. Second, the open circuit failure is studied. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. Good monitoring and detection of faults in the inverter can increase the system's reliability and decrease the undesirable faults that appeared in the PV system. The system behavior is tested under variable parameters and conditions using MATLAB/Simulink.

Abstract

This paper presents an online efficiency optimization method for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive system in an electric vehicle (EV). The proposed method considers accurately the total system losses including fundamental copper and iron losses, harmonic copper and iron losses, magnet loss, and inverter losses. Therefore, it has the capability to always guarantee maximum efficiency control. A highly trusted machine model is built using finite element analysis (FEA). This model considers accurately the magnetic saturation, spatial harmonics, and iron loss effect. The overall system efficiency is estimated online based on the accurate determination of system loss, and then the optimum current angle is defined online for the maximum efficiency per ampere (MEPA) control. A series of results is conducted to show the effectiveness and fidelity of proposed method. The results show the superior performance of proposed method over the conventional offline efficiency optimization methods.

Abstract

This paper reports on the design and implementation in DSP as hardware in the loop of a nonlinear control strategy for a grid-connected variable speed wind turbine using a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The objective of this work is to build a real-time nonlinear hybrid approach combining Backstepping control and sliding mode control strategies for DFIG used in wind energy conversion systems (WECS). The results of the DSP implementation are discussed and qualitative and quantitative performance evaluations are performed under various disturbed conditions. The implementation is performed using the TMS320F28335 DSP combined with the MATLAB/Simulink (2016a) environment. The experimental results have been satisfactorily achieved, which implies that the proposed strategy is an efficient and robust approach to monitor the WECS.

Abstract

A robust high-speed sliding mode control (SMC) of three phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is presented. The SMC served for inner speed control while a simplified hysteresis current control (HCC) scheme was used in the outer current control to generate gating signals for the inverter switches. The present research leverages on the ability of SMC to directly access system speed error which it attempts driving to zero by cancelling modelling uncertainties and disturbances. Performance comparison was done for the SMC model and an existing model having classical PI controller. With the initial positive speed command of 200 rpm at 5 Nm constant loading, rotor speed with SMC neatly settled to the reference speed at 0.085 seconds without overshoot while the rotor speed of the model with PI controller settled at 0.217 seconds after overshoot. This translates to 155.3% speed enhancement. Similar superior speed performance of the SMC was also observed during recovering from sudden speed reversal. While the SMC model recovered and settled to the reference speed of -200 rpm at 0.369 seconds, the model with PI controller settled at 0.482 seconds. From the results, it can be seen that SMC demonstared superiority over the conventioanl PI controller for complex drives systems.

Abstract

Recently, LCL has become amongst the most attractive filter used for grid-connected flyback inverters. Nonetheless, the switching of power devices in the inverter configuration creates harmonics that affect the end application behavior and might shorten its lifetime. Furthermore, the resonance frequencies produced by the LCL network contribute to the system instability. This paper proposes a step-by-step guide to designing an LCL filter by considering several key aspects such as the resonance frequency and maximum current ripple. A single-phase grid-connected flyback microinverter with an LCL filter was designed then constructed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Several different parameter variations and damping solutions were used to analyze the performance of the circuit. The simulation result shows a promising total harmonic distortion (THD) value below 5% and harmonic suppression up to 14%.

Abstract

Selective harmonic elimination technique SHE is adopted in this work to reduce the harmonic contents in single phase cascaded multilevel inverter. The firing instants for the electronic switches MOSFETs in the inverter are calculated off line for five level to thirteen level inverter. An Arduino microcontroller is programmed to cope with different topologies of the multilevel inverter. The implemented multi-level (MLI) inverter results are compared with Simulink simulation program and are found very close to each other. SHE technique works at system frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz) and the switching losses are very small. The sinusoidal pulse width modulation SPWM requires a carrier frequency not less 20 times the system frequency so SHE approach is found to be superior compared with SPWM. Also, SHE technique shows significant reduction in THD as the number of levels increased. Results for the output voltages and currents along with their frequency spectrum are shown and compared with traditional SPWM.

Abstract

The application of the direct torque control strategy for induction machine drives is mainly characterized by torque and flux distortions caused by voltage vector limitation. The goal of this paper is to perform the conventional DTC induction machine drives and reduce ripples of both flux and torque response. The proposed contribution is based on the control of the DC output side of the rectifier feeding the voltage source inverter by means of PI controller in order to adapt the voltage vector used in typical DTC switching table. Mathematic models are built using MATLAB Simulink and programming environment; the simulation results show the difference between the proposed method and classical DTC.

Abstract

Mainly the DC motors are employed in most of the application. The main objective is to Regulate the DC motor system. A motor which displays the appearances of a DC motor but there is no commutator and brushes is called as brushless DC motor. These motors are widespread to their compensations than other motors in relationships of dependability, sound, efficiency, preliminary torque and longevity. To achieve the operation more reliable and less noisy, brushless dc motors are employed. In the proposed work, dissimilar methods of speed control are analysed. In real time submission of speed control of BLDC motor, numerous strategies are executed for the speed control singularity. The modified approaches are the employment of PI controller, use of PID controller and proposed current controller.

Abstract

This paper proposes two new simplified cascade multiphase DC-DC boost power converters with high voltage-gain and low ripple. All simplifications reduce the number of active switching devices from 2N into N, where N is the phase number. The first simplification reduces the number of inductors from 2N into N+1 and increases the number of diodes from 2N into (2N+1). The second simplification reduces the number of inductors from 2N into N+1 and increases the number of diodes from 2N into (3N+1). The second simplification needs inductors with smaller current rating than the first simplification. The expressions of output voltage as a function of load current are derived by taking into account the voltage drops across the inductors and switching power devices. Simulated and experimental results are included to show the basic performance of the proposed cascade multiphase DC-DC boost power converters.

Abstract

In this paper, we will study a four-wheel drive electric vehicle (4WDEV)with two control strategies: conventional direct torque control CDTC and DTC based on fuzzy logic (DTFC). Our overall idea in this work is to show that the 4WDEV equipped with four induction motors providing the drive of the driving wheels controlled by the direct fuzzy torque control ensures good stability of the 4WDEV in the different topologies of the road, bends and slopes. and increases the range of the electric vehicle. Numerical simulations were performed on an electric vehicle powered by four 15 kW induction motors integrated into the wheels using the MATLAB / Simulink environment, where the reference speeds of each wheel (front and rear) are obtained using an electronic speed differential (ESD). This can eventually cause it to synchronize the wheel speeds in any curve. The speed of each wheel is controlled by two types of PI and FLC controllers to improve stability and speed response (in terms of setpoint tracking, disturbance rejection and climb time). Simulation results show that the proposed FLC control strategy reduces torque, flux and stator current ripple. While the4WDEV range was improved throughout the driving cycle and battery power consumption was reduced.
