It is believed that self-compassion is beneficial for a human to survive in their environment. Self-compassion is the ability to entertain and care for oneself when suffering, failure and imperfection rather than self-criticism. This research attempts to find out the level of self-compassion in vocational higher education students and to explore the differences in terms of self-compassion between male and female students. Employing Neff's Self-Compassion Scale (short form) measurement tool, this study was conducted through a survey technique. The results show that female students had a slightly higher level of self-compassion than males. Regarding the significant elements of self-compassion which are self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, it was found that there are differences in the dominant component of self-compassion between male and female students. This finding shows that female students were dominated by self-kindness rather than mindfulness and common humanity. It can be said that female students have more dominant ability to understand and accept themselves as well as to give tenderness. Whereas male students were dominated by common humanity rather than mindfulness and self-kindness. Male students have more dominant ability to perceive difficulties and problem which are part of human life, and these are things that everyone experiences and they always realize that they do not experience it by themselves. Based on the results of the study, it is expected that appropriate handling can be formulated to improve the students’ self-compassion.

Songs are increasingly used by teachers to teach English because students can learn many things from songs, such as vocabulary items and figurative language. However, sometimes the use of songs in the classroom only covers the surface of the discussion. Students need to be able to understand songs deeper by learning the figurative language. It is not easy to understand figurative language because people can interpret the meaning of it freely based on the context. Learning figurative language becomes important because it is found to give four beneficial aspects to students. Therefore, this study analyzed figurative language used in three songs in “Student’s Book 2 for Senior High School Students Grade XI”, which can be used by students to learn about songs deeper by understanding figurative language easily. This qualitative study can also be a consideration for the teachers and those who design the learning materials to include figurative language in the song’s part in the textbook.

The research aimed at analyzing the equivalence between the source language and its translations based on the translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). This research focused on the amplification and transposition techniques could be seen on the imperative sentences especially command. The research was conducted by using qualitative method. The data to support this research was taken from an Harry Potter’s novel entitled Harry Potter and The order of Phoenix” in English as source language (SL) and its translation into Indonesian novel as target language (TL). Library research and observation method were used in collecting of data. The technique of collecting data implemented by reading the novel and using note- taking. First step was taking the magazines then reading the novel to carefully understand how the source language (SL) in English were being translated into Indonesian translation in Target Language (TL). The second step was underlining the data of SL which were translated into TL then taking note those data that had been found into a paper or note book. The last step, the selected data were classified based on the objects investigated was techniques of translation. The instruments used were ball point and note book. The translator applied amplification and transposition to produce equivalences when transferring the meaning from the source language (SL) into target language (TL). Therefore, the overlapping translation could be minimized. Amplification had a role especially the addition of information. Some of data showed the phenomena when the detail information did not contain in the source language and the translator must be sensitive by putting the necessary information in target language. Meanwhile, transposition made a shift in translation as follows, structure shift, unit shift and class of shift. It occurred because of the different linguistics factor in SL into TL.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language is challenging. The body of literature has addressed the issue on the current challenges in teaching English as Foreign Language. However, only few studies have investigated the issue in remote areas of Indonesia. This qualitative study investigates the current challenges in teaching English in least-developed region of Indonesia based on the following criteria: language comprehension, method and approach, practical implementation, and socio-cultural environment. The data were collected from four English lecturers in one of teaching universities in Indonesia. The participants were selected using purposive sampling technique. The data were collected using in-depth interview and field observation which were then analyzed descriptively. The results of the study reveal that the participants have to deal with several obstacles in teaching English. Those obstacles include the students’ low proficiency of language comprehension, limited resources of materials, communication gap between lecturers and students, students’ lack of enthusiasm and participation in learning and lack of environmental support from society. From the observation, the participants show that the challenges are mitigated by adjusting their choice of pedagogical instruction and learning materials according to students’ level of language comprehension. The study suggests that the infrastructure development is strongly essential to establish a good teaching environment. Besides, creating positive understanding and paradigm about the sanctity of learning English for students might be able to help the students’ to study English better.

Music festivals are a medium for people from all walks of life to meet and engage especially between fans and their favorite musicians. Jogjarockarta is an international rock music festival held in Indonesia in the cultural city of Jogjakarta. In 2017, a progressive music group from the US, Dream Theater, was invited to the festival and performed together with Indonesian metal and rock bands. The purpose of this study is to describe the cultural meaning of the social situation created by the 2017 Jogjarockarta music festival. The data were collected through interviews with the promoters, field observations by attending the festival, combined with secondary data from social media in the form of information and comments about the festival downloaded from different sources. It is analyzed from the perspectives of tourism and performing arts in the event. The study showed that the festival created a social situation in the form of relationship between three actors namely the Promoters, Audiences and featured Performers. It was found that there are “other“ audiences represented by the local community of the city where the festival was held to support the festival’s success. Unique roles immerged in the form of host, intermediary and guest. In the context of tourism, this study found that the hosts were the ones who went on an adventure. They had a common similarity as “givers”. The guests, as the performers, entertained their fans to peregrinate with them, while the hosts educated the guests on the local culture and wisdom which the guests could bring back home as a source of inspiration for their creative works. This study provides another perspective for the promoter or the event organizer to create “a spiritual relationship” which is “a space” to inspire other people. This understanding will, in turn, ensure the continuity for music festivals.

This research is a study of the effect of visual complaints on learning achievement. High and low visual complaints are strongly influenced by student mobility or motor activity. Mobility can also maintain concentration to be maintained at a certain time. Class mobility is carried out through simple interactive learning, which is an effort to invite students to always move and always be active in the learning process. The long-term goal of research is to obtain effective learning strategies in vocational universities, while the short-term goal of research is to obtain learning methods in English subjects that are best able to provide optimal results on student academic achievement. Departing from the problem that the concentration of students decreases in line with the length of the lecture and the lack of student interaction in the classroom, a strategy is made that allows the concentration of students to be maintained during the lecture process by increasing student mobility in the classroom. To find out the impact of the treatment/ intervention on the subject's condition, a real experiment will be conducted using the two period cross over design. The assessment of the quality of the learning process was carried out with 2 cycles of study, in which each cycle was ended by giving a test/questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. Student learning achievements in the form of final grades are calculated according to the grade with the following weighting: 10% daily quiz/test + 10% assignment + 10% report + 30% Middle Semester Exam + 40% Final Semester Examination. The results showed that high visual complaints can reduce concentration and reduce student achievement.
