Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

This research is a qualitative descriptive research that aims to see the level of strategy used by smart students who get the value A. data collection techniques used in this study is a questionnaire and focus group discussion of students majoring in English year entered 2016/2017. Based on the research, it was found that dominant students use affective strategies with an average of 4.8 high levels. Metacognitive strategies also get high level results with an average of 4.6. Here are the medium levels on the cognitive strategy with an average of 2.9, the social strategy with an average of 2.8, the compensation strategy with an average of 2.74 and the strategy memory with an average of 2.70. So it can be concluded that affective strategy is the dominant strategy used by smart students who score A in English majors.Keywords: Speaking, Language learning strategy, Student is smart

Berbicara merupakan salah satu keahlian yang harus dimiliki oleh siswa dalam tujuan untuk tercapainya keefektifan dalam berkomunikasi. Kemampuan berbicara ini akan sangat berguna bagi siswa sekolah menengah kejuruan yang nantinya akan memasuki dunia bisnis ekonomi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan produk ditinjau dari segi grammar dan knowledge of genre. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif (descriptive research). Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah 62 siswa kelas X jurusan Pemasaran di SMK Negeri 3 Padang. Sampel penelitian didapatkan dengan menggunakan metode purposive sampling dimana peneliti hanya mengambil satu perwakilan kelas sebagai sampel penelitian, yaitu 31 siswa kelas X Pemasaran 2. Data dalam penelitian merupakan hasil tes unjuk kerja kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan satu dari dua tema produk berbeda yaitu electronic dan kosmetik. Dari hasil penelitian diketahui kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas X Pemasaran 2 SMK Negeri 3 Padang ditinjau dari segi grammar mendapat nilai rata-rata 73.81 dengan kategori sangat baik (very good) dan dari segi knowledge of genre mendapat nilai rata-rata 69.27 dengan kategori sangat baik (very good). Dari hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan berbicara siswa dilihat dari segi grammar dan knowledge of genre dalam mendeskripsikan produk adalah sangat baik (very good).

Digital Storytelling is a media to telling story by using technology. The purpose of digital storytelling is to improve EFL students’ narrative writing at Senior High School. The main thing that is discussed in this paper is how teachers and students implement digital storytelling in improving EFL students’ narrative writing and what are the advantages of creating digital storytelling in improving EFL students’ narrative writing at Senior High School. The teacher builds the background of the student's knowledge first by showing the video in relation to the material to be given. Then, the teacher gives the narrative text related to the material which students are asked to understand the elements contained in the text. Furthermore, teachers provide exercise to students who are asked them to create digital storytelling itself in groups such as creating story map, mapping the plot structure, character profile, background information, completing the story, peer response t- chart, and storyboard. By creating digital storytelling, students can master English well.

AbstractThis research was a descriptive quantitavie research about English students’ ability in using lexical collocations viewed intheirspeaking performances. The uses of lexical collocations has been concerned as the 2013 batch English students had been practicing English at classes they had taken and at schools they had taught their temporary students. Lexical collocations indicated natural English which knowledge of it is necessary to gain as they are going to teach their students in the future. 18 students who had done PLK activity were involved in speaking test and interviews. The lexical collocations found in students sentences were analyzed and the types were classified to see the correct uses or collocation problems. It was found that the students’ ability in using lexical collocations was poor. All types of lexical collocations were used with different proportions with Verb and adjective and Adjective and Noun as the most frequent types of lexical collocations used. The problems were frequently of Verb and Noun and Adjective and Noun types. The causes of the problems were the limited knowledge of lexical collocations, the ignorance of the use of lexical collocations, and the use of direct translation from L1 to L2. It is concluded the more lexical collocations used, the more possible problems to occur.

AbstractThis paper discusses how to apply Google Docs for collaborative writing in teaching writing to English Department students. Google docs as a feature Google served for all its users can be used collaborative writing in which all students in one class can contribute to make a good writing. Collaborative writing means that students write a text and sharing ideas with others students and it will be corrected and supported by others students By using Google Docs for collaborative writing, students can interact and write together with other students in developing their writing. They can give comments to other students and edit other students’ drafts at the same time. It will help them to get more ideas in writing as they combine their ideas with others ideas. This research aimed to describe students difficulties in presenting spoken exposition text, limited to the use of simple present tense. This research was a descriptive research, conducted in May-June 2017 at MAN 2 Padang. The population was Grade XI of Science program students of MAN 2 Padang. The sample was 38 students chosen by using stratified random sampling method. The research data was the clauses with grammatical mistakes found in the transcript of students speaking, obtained by a speaking test. The result of the research showed that the most frequent difficulties of verbal clauses using simple present tense were subject-verb agreement (51%) and the use of auxiliary verb (18%). The most frequent difficulties of nominal clauses using simple present tense were no verb (71%) and no subject (13%).

The Sims with their realistic animation, complex scenarios and impressive interactivity, computer simulation games might be able to provide context-rich, cognitively engaging virtual environments for language learning. However, simulation games designed for second language learners are in short supply. As an alternative, could games designed for the massmarket be enhanced with support materials to allow students to enter and make use of them for learning? This classroom-based investigation looked into whether the best selling game “The SIMS” could be rendered pedagogically beneficial to young learners by means of supplementary materials designed to meet criteria for second language learning. The mixed-technique study will significant improvements in vocabulary knowledge, as well as a generally positive reaction to the modifications among users and will better to use this technique for young learners.

This paper’s aim is to explain how to use paper airplane game in reviewing students’ vocabulary. Elementary school students’ vocabulary (in knowing and understanding the vocabulary) relatively average because of some factors that are lacks of motivation and the use of inappropriate way of teaching in the classroom. Paper airplane game is one of the way of teaching that can be used by the teacher to overcome the problems. Paper airplane game helps students to improve their vocabulary comprehension that have been learned before. The steps in using paper airplane game are brainstorming, discussing about the material, and playing the paper airplane game. In brainstorming, teacher shows several pictures related to the material along with general questions about the pictures after that. The next step is discussing about the material, teacher will put the students in-group and they will discuss about the material guide by the questions given by the teacher. The next step is playing paper airplane game, teacher will guide the students in playing this game that will help them in improving the vocabulary that has been taught. And the last steps is concluding. In this step, the teacher make the conclusion about the material.

Abstract This research is a descriptive research which aims to observe the types of complex sentences in the theses written by graduates of English department graduates of March 2017 periode in Universitas Negeri Padang. The source of the data for this research are the theses written by English department graduates of March 2017 periode in Universitas Negeri Padang. There are 20 of 73 theses chosen as sample for this research by using purposive random sampling. Based on the research, there are three types of complex sentences within the theses namely noun clause, adverbial clause and adjective clause. The result of the analysis shows that there are 210 complex sentences from 20 theses. There are 23 sentences are categorized as noun clause, 126 as adverbial clauses and 61 adjective clauses. The most type used is the adverbial clause. It is found that 92 of 210 sentences are categorized very good, 110 are good, 8 are sufficient and 0 are poor. The adverbial clauses are the most used type of the sentences and followed adjective clause.Key words: Complex Sentence Types, Theses

This research aims to discover SMK students’ ability in using grammar, especially sentence structures, in producing oral procedure text. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population was 125 grade twelve students majoring in the food and beverage service study program at SMKN 9 Padang who were divided into 6 classes: XII JB 1, XII JB 2, XII JB 3, XII JB 4, XII Ps 1 and XII Ps 2. The sample was obtained by using random cluster sampling technique which resulted in XII Ps 1 class which had 28 students. The data were collected by giving them a speaking test to produce oral procedure text. The result showed that students’ ability in using declarative sentence in producing oral procedure text was in poor level (85,71%). Meanwhile, students’ ability in using imperative sentence in producing oral procedure text was in good level (46,43%).
