Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

AbstrakDalam makalah penulis menggunakan teknik freeze framing pada pengajaran the simple present tense di pre-writing descriptive text. Freeze framing merupakan sebuak teknik pengajaran yang menggunakan video sebagai media pembelajaran. Dari video tersebutlah siswa akan dikenalkan dengan the simple present tense dan penggunaannta didalam descriptive text. Dasar pengajaran menggunakan freeze framing adalah ketika video diputar, guru menghentikan video tersebut sejenak dan disaat video tersebuit dihentikan guru menerangkan kepada siswa mengenai dasar dasar dari the simple present tense. Dalam hubungannya dengan descriptive text, the simple present tense hanya dijelaskan sebagai bahagian dari pre-writing descriptive text. Hal ini dapat dilakukan dengan cara melakukan freeze framing pada pagian orientation dan juga description pada descriptive text. Tujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk: (1) memperkenalkan penggunaan freeze framing sebagai sebuah teknik dalam pengajaran the simple present tense; (2) untuk menerangkan pentingnya penggunaan media untuk menarik perhatian siswa didalam proses pembelajaran; (3) menerangkan keuntungan yang didapat dari penggunaan freeze framing dalam pengajaran the simple present tense.Kata kunci: Freeze faming technique, the simple present tense, descriptive text, junior high school students.

This paper explains about how to implement half a crossword puzzle in teaching vocabulary related to job and people for Elementary School students grade two. This game could be played in two groups, which are group A and B. In this game, teacher distributes different board for each group. Half of each board already filled and the filling boards are the answers of the opposite group. To play this game, group A gives a clue about a word to group B, and then group B tries to guess the clue given by group A. The group that can fill all the blank part correctly will be the winner. This game eases the students in mastering vocabularies related to job and people in English. It could also increase the students’ motivation because this game is interesting and fun.

This article discusses about a technique in teaching English cooperatively for senior high school students. This technique is called the two stay two stray technique. The teacher divides class into some groups of four students. Each of the groups discusses with their original group about a topic that is given by the teacher and shares the result of their discussion to other groups. The goal of this technique is to help students to find the ideas that will be developed in their writing, especially in writing a hortatory exposition text. Abstrak Artikel ini membahas tentang sebuah teknik pengajaran bahasa inggris secara kooperatif untuk siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA). Teknik ini dinamakan teknik the two stay two stray. Dalam teknik ini, guru membagi siswa menjadi beberapa kelompok yang terdiri dari empat orang siswa. Masing-masing kelompok mendiskusikan sebuah topik yang diberikan guru bersama kelompok asal mereka dan membagikan hasil diskusi mereka dengan kelompok lainnya. Adapun tujuan dari teknik ini adalah membantu siswa dalam menemukan ide-ide yang mereka dapatkan dari hasil diskusi dan nantinya akan dikembangkan dalam tulisan mereka, khususnya untuk menulis hortatory exposition text.

AbstractThis paper deals with the use of Cocktail Party Technique in teaching recount text for senior high school students. Cocktail Party Technique can be used by teachers in teaching recount text in order to help students improving their speaking for mastering the spoken form of recounttext. This technique is used as the solution for teachers to solve students’ problems in learning recount text. This technique encourages the students to speak in the classroom in order to improve their mastery in speaking of recount text. Cocktail Party Technique can be applied for senior high school students in Indonesia. In applying this technique, teacher needs approximately 70 minutes to take time required. It is appropriate to the grade X in senior high school which has 90 minutes for learning English language based on Indonesia Curriculum of 2013.Key words: Teaching speaking, recount text, Cocktail Party Technique.

This research was aimed to find out the difficulties that mostly faced by students in listening comprehension and the factors which cause the difficulties at English language and literature department FBS UNP. This study employed descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects of this research were K-2 Class which consists of 32 students selected by using cluster sampling technique. The data was collected from questionnaire and interview. The researcher distributed the questionnaire to all members of the class. After that, the researcher chose six students to be interviewed. The results of this study showed that the difficulties that the students faced in listening comprehension were related into three categories, they were the listening material, the listener, and the physical setting. Besides, the factors which cause students’ difficulties in listening comprehension were depend on others, shame to ask the lecturer about the material, having emotional disturbances, the lecturer explains the material too quickly, lack of reward and reinforcement, and unfocused.

AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat apakah penggunaan Asia Parliamentary Debate secara signifikan mempengaruhi kemampuan menulis teks Hortatory exposition siswa kelas XI Diniyyah Puteri Padang Panjang. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPS 1 dan IPS 2 Diniyyah Puteri Padang Panjang. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan untuk mendapatkan data adalah tes menulis teks hortatory exposition yang diambil langsung dari siswa pada sebelum dan sesudah penggunaan strategi.. Temuan dari penelitian ini yaitu t hitung > t table, 1,60>1,31 yang berarti penggunaan Asia Parliamentary Debate mempengaruhi kemampuan menulis text hortatory exposition siswa secara signifikan.Key words: Asia Prliamentary Debate, writing, hortatory exposition text.

This research is a descriptive research that is intended to reveal the quality of PowerPoint slides made by English Department of Padang State University in presenting English course materials. The data in this research were obtained from the archives of PowerPoint which is already presented in course TEFL course (Teaching English as Foreign Language) by educational-program students. Up until now, the software which is known as PowerPoint has been widely used to assist the learning process in academic settings ranging from the primary school level to the higher level such as university. Thus, a research on the use of this software academic fields needs to be conducted. The instrument used in this study is an analytic rubric. After conducting the research, the quality of students’ PowerPoint slides in term of the content accuracy was still in average. Since the students were already in the final year, the ability to understand the text about the course materials is expected to be better. Nevertheless, although the final score was considered as an average, there are still some students who presented the course materials incorrectly. In other words, the information they presented was different from the original source given by the instructors.

AbstrakArtikel ini membahas penggunaan suatu strategi pengajaran dalam menulis narrative text dengan menggunakan stategi CDO (Compare, Diagnose, and Operate) yang difokuskan pada siswa tingkat Sekolah Menengah Pertama. CDO merupakan strategi menulis teks naratif melalui tiga langkah, yaitu Compare, Diagnose, dan Operate. Strategi dalam mengajar merupakan salah satu masalah yg umum dijumpai oleh para guru dalam pengajaran menulis narrative text. Strategi CDO mencakup kegiatan dalam memandu para siswa untuk menulis dengan benar melalui proses sehingga akan mempermudah para siswa dalam menulis narrative text dengan mengikuti ketiga langkah dalam CDO tersebut. Writing is a very complex skill and difficult to master. Difficulties in writing can be seen in various aspects of writing. There are various factors that cause difficulties in writing. This study aims to analyze the kind of writing difficulties faced by English teachers. In addition, this study also identifies factors that cause writing difficulties, namely psychological, socio-cultural, and linguistic factors. This research uses descriptive quantitative methods. Data were collected from 5 English teachers who teach at SMKN 8 Padang. In collecting data, the teachers were asked to write an academic essay with the topic of English for vocational high school students. To find out the factors that cause teacher difficulties in writing, data were collected through interviews. The results of the study aimed at teachers faced difficulties in every aspect of writing. they were difficulties in contents, organization, language use, and vocabulary. Then, the dominant factors that cause writing difficulties were psychological factors.

Abstrak Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan dan menjelaskan tentang cara menggunakan strategi TAD (Transitions-Actions-Details) untuk meningkatkan keterampilan siswa dalam menulis teks recount untuk siswa sekolah menengah pertama. Strategi TAD adalah suatu strategi dimana siswa diminta menuliskan kembali bagian-bagian penting yang terjadi dalam cerita sesuai dengan urutannya. Strategi ini menggunakan sebuah tabel untuk memudahkan siswa menyusun kejadian- kejadian sesuai urutannya. Penggunaan strategi ini dibagi kedalam tiga langkah pengajaran. Pertama yang dilakukan dalam pre-teaching activities yaitu guru mengaktifkan pengetahuan siswa tentang recount text. Kedua pada whilst-teaching activities, siswa diminta untuk membuat sebuah tabel yang terdiri dari tiga kolom. Kolom pertama berlabel “transitions”, kolom yang kedua berlabel “actions” dan kolom terakhir berlabel “details”. Guru menjelaskan apa maksud dari setiap kolom agar siswa mengerti apa yang akan dikerjakan. Terakhir pada post-teaching activities, siswa diberikan sebuah pekerjaan rumah untuk mengisi tabel TAD masing masing secara berkelompok.
