Abstract

Abstrak Makalah yang berjudul Using Metaplan Technique in Teaching Writing a Discussion Text to Senior High School Students ini membahas tentang bagaimana meningkatkan kemampuan siswa SMA kelas XII untuk menyampaikan ide mereka dalam menulis discussion text dengan menggunakan teknik metaplan. Seperti yang kita ketahui, menulis adalah salah satu kegiatan yang tidak begitu disukai oleh siswa. Ada dua hal/faktor  yang menjadi masalah bagi siswa dalam menulis discussion text. Faktor pertama yang menyebabkan kurangnya motivasi siswa untuk menulis discussion text adalah tidak menariknya teknik yang digunakan oleh guru. Guru cenderung menggunakan teknik yang sudah sering digunakan sebelumnya sehingga membuat siswa menjadi bosan. Kedua, siswa merasa kesulitan dalam menyampaikan ide/argumen mereka. Mereka tidak tahu bagaimana cara menyampaikan ide/argumen tanpa merasa takut apakah ide/argumen mereka itu benar atau tidak. Untuk mngatasi masalah ini seorang guru harus kreatif dalam menciptakan kegiatan yang menyenangkan dan bisa meningkatkan minat siswa untuk menulis. Salah satu cara untuk meningkatkan motivasi dan mempermudah siswa untuk menyampaikan ide/argumen dalam menulis discussion text adalah dengan menggunakan teknik metaplan. Dengan menggunakan teknik metaplan ini, diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi pada pelajaran menulis khususnya pada discussion tetx, sehingga siswa mampu menulis teks ini dengan baik dan benar. Abstract

This paper is conducted based on phenomena faced by the writer in her teaching practice. As demanded by K-13 the objective of teaching reading is to develop students reading skill, so they can read and comprehend the text appropriately. At senior high school, one of texts that should be mastered by students is News Items. Based on the writer’ observations there are so many students who have difficulty in reading comprehension the text. It is caused of several factor influences the students’ reading comprehensions such as monotone reading activity, learning environment and strategy or technique used by the teacher is not interesting by the students. Therefore it is needed a new reading strategy applied to solve this problem for the students to comprehend the text through Team Word Webbing. Team Word Webbing is a kind of semantic mapping or clustering strategy used to make the students actively participate in team or group. This paper is aimed at discussing how to use Team Word Webbing in teaching reading comprehension on news item text for Senior High School Student. By applying this strategy, the writer hopes that this paper will help the students to be motivated and interested in reading process.

Abstract

Abstrak Artikel ini ditulis untuk memaparkan suatu strategi pembelajaran sekaligus pemilihan materi pembelajaran memahami teks narrative bahasa inggris disekolah menengah pertama dengan cara melalui bacaan bebas seperti komik, karena komik juga bisa dapat dijadikan sebagai media yang digunakan dalam pengajaran dalam memahami teks narrative. Kegiatan yang dibahas dalam artikel ini adalah kegiatan awal, kegiatan inti, dan kegiatan akhir. Pada kegiatan awal guru memberitahu siswa bahwa mereka akan membahas tentang  teks narrative.  Pada kegiatan inti, Pada kegiatan inti, guru akan membahas sedikit tentang teks narrative kepada siswa dengan melalui bacaan contohnya komik. Kemudian kegiatan akhir, guru memberikan refleksi tentang pelajaran dan menyimpulkan pelajaran dengan siswa. dan kemudian guru melakukan tanya jawab mengenai bahan bacaan tersebut kepada siswa. Keunggulan dari media ini adalah siswa dibantu untuk mengembangkan ide idenya dalam membaca contoh teks narrative melalui komik.   Keywords      : Narrative teks, Free Voluntary Reading, comics, technique

Abstract

Speaking is one of the four elements of language that is very important to master in order to support a person's ability to speak. Talking is the process of conveying an idea and information orally to the opponent. In Indonesia, English has been taught since Elementary level up to University level. However, not many students are able to speak English fluently. This paper is discussing about one technique that can help teacher in teaching speaking in more enjoyable way at classroom. The technique that will be discussed is Talking Stick Technique. The technique uses a wooden stick as a sign for whom who may speak.

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to see the effect of using summarizing strategy toward students’ reading comprehension in reading. This study was an experimental research. The population was the students of eleventh grade of MAN 2 Padang registered for the 2011/2012 academic year. Sample used by using cluster random sampling which was gotten XI IPA 1 as experimental class and XI IPA 2 as control class. The test was done twice: pretest and posttest. The instrument was reading comprehension test. The data was the students’ score of reading comprehension test and was analyzed statistically by using t-test. Based on the counting, it can be concluded that the using of summarizing strategy in reading can give the good effect of students’ reading comprehension. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat dampak penggunaan strategi meringkas terhadap pemahaman siswa dalam membaca. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini siswa kelas XI MAN 2 Padang tahun ajaran 2011-2012. Sampelnya menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling dan terpilihlah kelas XI IPA 1 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan XI IPA 2 sebagai kelas control dengan. Tes dilakukan dua kali: pretest dan posttest. Instrumentnya berupa soal pemahaman membaca. Data berupa nilai tes pemahaman membaca oleh kedua kelompok sampel dianalisis secara statistik dengan menggunakan rumus t-test. Berdasarkan hasil hitungan ini, disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan strategi meringkas dalam pemelajaran membaca dapat memberikan pengaruh yang lebih baik terhadap pemahaman siswa dalam membaca.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the errors made by the second year English department students in using passive voice in the Academic Writing Subject. Specifically, it was aimed at finding the types of errors and the causes of errors made by the students in their academic writings. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The sample of this research was the K3 students consisting of 19 students. The sample was taken based on the cluster sampling technique. Then, the students’ academic writings were used as the source of the data. The data collection was taken by using the theory of Surface Structure Taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. (1982). Related to the causes of errors, the theory proposed by James and Brown was used to study the causes of errors made by the students. The findings show that there were 367 errors made by the students. The highest type of errors made by the students was 216 omission errors (59%) and followed by 104 misformation errors (28%), 34 addition errors (9%), and 13 misordering errors (4%). It was found that the major causes of errors were interlingual and intralingual factors. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students did the four types of errors.

Abstract

Abstract                           This research was a descriptive research that aimed to identify the reading comprehension questions in English textbook by using Higher Order Thinking Skill. This study also aimed to analyze and evaluate reading comprehension questions in English textbook. The data used in this research is reading comprehension questions of English textbook. The English textbook were from grade X of SMAN 2 Padang. This study used instrument in the form of indicators from HOTS criteria and Bloom’s criteria. From the result of the reading comprehension question in English textbook by using Higher Order Thinking Skill at grade X of SMAN 2 Padang, it showed that the reading comprehension questions had used the HOTS criteria. As a result of the analysis in reading comprehension questions, 36 questions ( 9.7%) Higher Order Thinking Skill questions were found in the reading comprehension questions. The result of this research also found that mostly-used HOTS criteria in the reading comprehension questions is analyzing category. The knowledge dimensions found in the questions are factual knowledge, conceptual knowledge, procedural knowledge, and metacognitive knowledge. Key words: Reading comprehension questions in English textbook, Higher Order                     Thinking Skill, Bloom’s Taxonomy

Abstract

Abstrak   Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara menggunakan CPC (Content Process Craft) table dalam mengajar pemahaman membaca didalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris siswa SMA sering mengalami kesulitan dalam membaca dikarenakan mereka tidak begitu memahami bacaan yang mereka baca. Kemampuan siswa dalam memahami teks masih sangat kurang disebabkan karena kurang bervariasinya strategi ataupun aktifitas yang digunakan selama membaca. CPC (Content Process Craft) table digunakan untuk mempermudah siswa dalam menyusun informasi, memberikan pendapat, serta menggabungkaninformasi dan pendapat mereka menjadi sebuah gagasan yang baru. Penggunaan CPC (Content Process Craft) table akan mempermudah guru dan siswa dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca. Dengan menggunakan tabel CPC (Content Process Craft) pada pengajaran membaca, kemampuan siswa dalam menganalisa bacaan akan semakin terasah sehingga pemahaman mereka menjadi lebih baik.   Keywords: CPC (Content Process Craft) Table

Abstract

This paper described about how to increase students’ speaking ability by using verbal linguistic intelligence activity. At the beginning of the class, teacher gives information about the topic which is being discussed, it also can be used to check students’ comprehension about the topic. Verbal linguistic intelligence is neede to understand about the information of the topic to be learned. Verbal linguistic intelligence is an ability to think about words and use it to express the idea to others. Students use verbal linguistic intelligence when talking to others. In learning process, this ability is important to know students’ comprehension and how to increase it. Bassed on explanation above, by increasing students’ verbal linguistic intelligence, it will be easier for the students to understand about the topic which being learned and it also increase students’ ability in speaking. The more students understand about the topic, it can be easy for them to express their ideas.

Abstract

The use of advertisement can assist students in writing hortatory exposition text. The advertisementis given to students at the pre-writing stage. The type of advertisement that is used is electronic products that show a new product such as mobile phone, television, laptop etc. By looking at the advertisement, the students will be easier to get ideas to write. Then, the teacher makes the hortatory exposition text based on the ideas of the students on the topic in the advertisement. After that, the teacher gives another advertisement with the different topics. Then, the teacher divides the students in a group to write a hortatory exposition text based it provided. After finishing writing, the teacher checked the students' writing with other groups. At the end of the teaching, the teacher concludes material. ABSTRAK Penggunaan iklan untuk membantu siswa dalam menulis teks hortatory  exposition. Iklan diberikan kepada siswa pada tahap pra-menulis. Iklan yang digunakan adalah iklan produk electronik yang menunjukkan suatu produk terbaru seperti iklan mobile phone, televisi, laptop, dan lain-lain. Dengan melihat iklan, siswa akan lebih mudah untuk mendapatkan ide-ide untuk menulis. Kemudian guru membuat teks hortatory exposition berdasarkan ide-ide dari siswa tentang topik dalam iklan tersebut. Setelah itu, guru memberikan iklan dengan topik yang berbeda. Kemudian, guru membagi siswa dalam bentuk kelompok untuk menulis teks hortatory exposition berdasarkan iklan yang diberikan. Setelah selesai menulis, guru memeriksa hasil tulisan siswa bersama kelompok lainnya. Di akhir pengajaran, guru menyimpulkan materi.
