Journal of English Language Teaching
Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat pengaruh penggunaan Talk for Writing dalam pengajaran menulis hortatory exposition text terhadap hasil menulis siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Padang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen dengan populasinya yaitu kelas XI IPA SMAN 1 Padang tahun pelajaran 2012/2013. Sampel penelitiannya yaitu kelas XI IPA 3 sebagai kelas kontrol dan kelas XI IPA 6 sebagai kelas eksperimen. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah writing essay test. Nilai tes dianalisa dengan hasil t-hitung (1.17) lebih kecil dari nilai t-tabel (1.679). Sehingga disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Talk for Writing tidak memberikan dampak yang signifikan terhadap hasil menulis siswa.Key words: Teaching writing, Talk for Writing, Writing achievement.

The aim of this paper is to explain the use of Prezi in teaching speaking at junior high school. Prezi is one of the media that can be used by the teacher in teaching and learning process, especially in Narrative Text. Using Prezi in class is very good in order to make students more interested in talking in front of the class. Prezi is a good media as it can add pictures, musics, and videos. There are some steps in teaching speaking by using Prezi. First, the teacher makes a Prezi presentation before coming to the class. Second, the teacher shows the Prezi presentation about Narrative Text to the students. Third, the teacher asks students to retell the story that they already seen by using Prezi. Fourth, the teacher asks students to practice speaking in groups. Fifth, the teacher asks students to tell the story that they have been practicing by using Prezi in front of the class. Last, Teacher and students conclude the lesson together. By using Prezi in the classroom, it will be easier for the students to speak infront of the class because there are pictures and sentences that help students to tell the story.

Abstrak Tujuan artikel ini adalah untuk memaparkan salah satu kegiatan dari pembelajaran kosakata yang dapat digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa SD. Kegiatan yang dimaksud adalah “Coloring Pictures Activity” atau disebut juga dengan kegiatan mewarnai gambar. Dimana siswa harus mampu untuk mewarnai gambar sesuai dengan instruksi yang diberikan oleh guru. Dengan “Coloring Pictures Activity”, siswa memahami kosakata tidak hanya dengan mengetahui arti kata tersebut, tetapi juga mengetahui bagaimana bentuk atau gambar asli dari kata-kata tersebut. Dalam artikel ini penulis mengambil topik pelajaran mengenai buah-buahan, sehingga dalam kegiatan mewarnai penulis juga mengambil gambar buah-buahan sebagai gambar yang akan diwarnai oleh siswa. Melalui kegiatan ini diharapkan siswa lebih mudah untuk mengingat kosakata sekaligus bentuk atau gambar dari kosakata yang mereka pelajari. Key Words: picture, color, vocabulary, activity

This paper is aimed at describing the use of ‘Murder Mystery Game’ in teaching speaking recount texts to senior high shchool students. This game is applied to motivate senior high school students to speak English. This game enables students to solve the problem by using the clues given to them. ‘Murder Mystery Game’ allows the students to share ideas to other students by giving some steps to accomplish. Those steps are interviewing character, discussing in group to find the murderer, and discovering the murderer and telling it to the class in form of oral recount texts.

This research is a descriptive research that is aimed to describe the types and the degree of communicativeness of speaking activities found in the textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris UntukSiswa SMA-MA/ SMK-MAK Kelas X published by YramaWidya. The data was gained by using two data formats. The first data format is a table to gain the types of speaking activities in the textbook. The second data format is adapted from Littlewood (2004) which has rank and criteria in each level of communicativeness of the activity. The result of this research revealed that the textbook has relatively varied speaking activities namely role play, drill, discussion, interview, information gap activity, reporting, and storytelling. Also, the degree of communicativeness of the speaking activities in the textbook is above average.

Abstrak Media dan aktivitas menulis yang diterapkan guru mempengaruhi kemampuan menulis siswa. Guru perlu menyediakan media yang dapat membuat mengajar dan belajar menulis teks menjadi lebih menyenangkan dan memberi siswa kesempatan untuk banyak berlatih menulis. Salah satunya dengan memanfaatkan situs jejaring sosial internet. Dengan Facebook, guru dapat membuka sebuah halaman kelompok dimana anggota kelasnya dapat berdiskusi secara online. Melalui facebook, guru dapat menerapkan peer-comment dengan lebih mudah. Untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis, guru dapat memberi siswa tugas untuk mengunggah tulisannya di Facebook, dan tulisan tersebut akan dikomentari atau diperbaiki oleh siswa lainnya. Terakhir, menulis di facebook akan membuat kegiatan belajar menulis menjadi menyenangkan karena facebook adalah situs yang mereka akses hampir setiap hari. In teaching English there are some common problems that found by the teacher in classroom, like students have lack motivation in learning English, teacher finds difficulty to choose an interesting method, a monotonous learning. Those problem make the students think that English as a difficult subject. Studying in the classroom is not limited with the use of paper, book or pen only. Using technology-based media and internet like application can be a good solution and give positive impact in teaching English. One of application based on the use of internet is Lino.it. Lino.it is software which formed in virtual wall and it can be placed some notes, pictures and videos. Teacher can use this software to support the use of black board or teacher can focus the teaching and learning with Lino.it. The writer wrote this paper with purpose: tell how teacher use Lino.it application in teaching process. The writer also hopes this application can make the teacher to be more creative in utilization media and develop the students’ learning quality.

Artikel ini membahas tentang teknik yaitu Don’t Stop the Music’s Game pada pengajaran dalam kosakata bahasa inggris. Dalam artikel ini dibahas bagaimana pengaplikasiaan teknik Don’t Stop the Music’s Game dalam proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas bahasa inggris, yang dapat membantu siswa untuk meningkatkan dan memotivasi kemampuan dalam kosakata. Teknik ini melatih siswa untuk lebih berfikir kritis dan bekerjasama untuk menghasilkan kosakata dari teks bacaan Tidak hanya itu, melalui teknik pembelajaran ini, siswa juga lebih terbiasa membaca dan bias mengerti akan teks bacaan. Dan salah satu alternative bagi guru untuk meningkatkan dan memperkaya kosakata siswa dalam belajar bahasa inggris bias tercapai secara optimal.

English Language Teaching Program is one of the programs at UNP that will propose to be certified by ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA). One of the requirements proposed by AUN-QA is getting feedback from stakeholders on curriculum. Program Specification is one of one crucial feature in curriculum. This study aimed to find out the students` perception on program specification of English Language Teaching Program based on AUN-QA criteria and to find what improvement needed based on students` perception. This survey study involved students first year, second year, third year and fourth year of ELT Program at UNP. Questionnaire containing 15 items was distributed to 352 students through Google form in order to get the data. Questionnaire consist four scales and then weighing is done in order to convert it into mean score. Then, the mean scores were converted into degree of perception. It is found out that the mean score for program identity is very high, 3.22 and it means that students have very good perception toward program identity. The mean score for potential career is also very high, 3.38 and indicates that students have very good perception toward potential career. The main finding shows that students have very good perception toward program specification even though there are few comments given by them who gave negative response on questionnaire. However, there is a little improvement needed based on students` perception. In conclusion, there is slighly improvement needed based on students` perception.Key words: Perception, Program Specification, AUN-QA

The aim of this paper is to discuss the ways of doing guided meditation for lowering Senior High School students’ anxiety to speak English as a foreign language. Regarding to the writer’s observation supported by other studies find that the students experienced the most anxiety when foreign language speaking activities begin. The noisy atmosphere suddenly changed into silence. The students’ negative perception toward their own ability and other negative evaluation are the main factors why they are too quiet as the teacher asked them to speak English in the classroom. This situation may lead the students’ having bad performance in learning foreign language, meanwhile the demand for having good communication skill in speaking foreign language, especially English is highly significant. Therefore, an English teacher has to encourage the student to speak English by using some useful techniques. One of them is using guided meditation that will benecessary for lowering the level of Senior High School students’ anxiety to speak English as their foreign language.
