Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Now English is introduced in elementary school as a local content. Teaching English to elementary school students is not easy because they easily get bored in learning. So, elementary school teacher should be able to find an appropriate way to motivate the students to learn English. One of the appropriate ways to activate elementary school students to speak English is by using a game known as “Good Morning Ball Game”. In this game, the teacher provides three different balls with a sentence will be said by the students. This game can activate the students’ willingness to study. So, the elementary school students do not easily get bored in learning English. AbstrakSekarang bahasa Inggris telah diajarkan di sekolah dasar sebagai salah satu pelajaran muatan lokal. Pengajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah dasar ini tidaklah mudah karena siswa sekolah dasar cenderung mudah bosan dalam belajar. Untuk itu, guru harus dapat menggunakan cara yang tepat agar siswa dapat termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris. Salah satu cara yang cocok untuk mengaktifkan siswa sekolah dasar untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris adalah dengan menggunakan sebuah permainan yang dikenal dengan “Good Morning Ball Game”. Pada permainan ini guru menggunakan tiga buah bola yang berbeda sesuai dengan kalimat yang akan diucapkan siswa. Permainan ini dapat mengaktifasikan keinginan siswa untuk belajar. This article aims to explain how English teachers can use Hot Seat Game to improve the students’ speaking ability at Senior High School. This Game aims to encourage students to be more active to speak English through group activities. To play this game, teacher by deviding students into several groups of 4-5 students. The teacher will choose one student to become a Hot Seat Member, and give the students questions. The questions given by the teacher can be a picture or cards that contains the words. The student who become a Hot Seat Member will guess the picture or the card without looking at it. Through Hot Seat Game, students will be encouraged to speak English to give signs to his friend who became the Hot Seat Member.

Abstract This paper deals with the use of Growing Gardening Metaphors Classroom Activity in teaching writing recount text for first grade of senior high school. Growing Gardening Metaphors can be used by teachers to make teaching and learning English classroom more enjoyable. This metaphor activity is used as the solution for the teacher to solve students’ problem in writing recount text in the first grade of senior high school. It helps the teacher in teaching writing recount text which motivates students to think more creative in considering the same function or activity both their experience and garden vocabulary while writing the text. Growing Gardening Metaphor can be applied for senior high school students in Indonesia. For doing this classroom activity, the teacher needs approximately 60 minutes to take the time required. It is appropriate to the grade X in senior high school which has two “teaching and learning hours” a week or 90 minutes for learning the English language based on the Indonesia Curriculum of 2013.Keywords: Teaching writing, recount text, Growing Gardening Metaphors.

AbstractThis study aimed to examine the effectiveness of using e-learning Moodle for homework in improving reading ability of grade X students of SMAN 4 Padang. The study was an experimental research with the population grade X of SMAN 4 Padang in academic year 2012/2013. Sample is class X7 as the experimental group and class X10 as the control group. Post-test was given after treatment in the experimental class. The reading comprehension data of both groups were analyzed using t-test formula. T-test result of the study is 2,833, while the table-t is 1.999. Based on the result of the calculation, it can be concluded that the use of e-learning Moodle for homework is more effective in improving students' reading ability.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat keefektifan penggunaan e-learning Moodle untuk pekerjaan rumah terhadap kemampuan membaca siswa di kelas X SMAN 4 Padang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen dengan populasi penelitian siswa kelas X SMAN 4 Padang tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Sampelnya yaitu kelas X7 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan X10 sebagai kelas kontrol. Pos-tes diberikan setelah perlakuan pada kelas eksperimen. Data berupa nilai tes pemahaman membaca oleh kedua kelompok sampel dianalisis menggunakan rumus uji-t. Hasil uji-t penelitian adalah 2,833 sedangkan tabel-t adalah 1,999. Berdasarkan hasil penghitungan ini, disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan e-learning Moodle untuk pekerjaan rumah lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa.Key words: reading ability, homework, E-learning Moodle

This paper is aimed to discuss about the use of The Show Don’t Tell technique which can develop students’ writing ability. In the beginning, the teacher explains the elements of descriptive text. Next, the theacher can use The Show Don’t Tell technique as an exercise to help the students develop ther writing ability.in this activity, the students will be divided into some groups which consist of ,at least, five students. After that, each group is asked to prepare the sheet that will be used to write after the teacher give a picture as a topic. The topic of each group will be different one and another. Next, each student in each group write a sentence which relates to the topic given. They will do this activity until the last member in each group. Before they submit the paper, the teacher asks them to check the correctness of their writing with their group. After applying this activity, it is hoped that students’ ability in writing descriptive text will increase and also can get their interest to write descriptive text easily because this activity is really fun.

The purpose of this article is to explain how the English teacher applies the Environmental Observation Strategy in teaching writing a descriptive text to Junior High School. The ability of Junior High School students in writing a descriptive text is weakness due to the use of strategy by the teacher is not interesting. Descriptive text is a genre of the text that illustrates and gives characteristics of a thing, an event and people including the behavior and identity of someone. One of teaching strategy, which helps students in writing descriptive text, is Environmental Observation Strategy. Environmental Observation Strategy is started by divided students in groups that is consisted by five students. Then they will observe the topic given from the teacher before, which is a group have to make idea while the observation happened. The time given is 10-15 minutes. After that, all of the idea of each group complete, so the groups combine the idea into a descriptive text. The implementing of Environmental Observation Strategy is hoped that it can be an alternative way to increase the ability of the students of Junior High School in writing. AbstrakTujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara menggunakan Environmental Observation Strategy. Kemampuan siswa SMP dalam memahami deskriptif teks masih sangat kurang disebabkan karena penggunaan media yang tidak menarik oleh guru dalam pengajaran. Deskriptif teks adalah suatu jenis teks yang berisikan gambaran atau ciri-ciri dari suatu benda, kejadian dan orang termasuk juga sifat dan tingkah laku seseorang. Salah satu media pengajaran yang dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami deskriptif teks adalah Environmental Observation Strategy Pengajaran menulis dengan menggunakan strategi Environmental Observation Strategy terlebih dahulu dimulai dengan membagi siswa dalam kelompok yang beranggotakan lima orang. Kemudian mereka akan mengobservasi topik yang telah diberikan guru sebelumnya dimana masing- masing anggota dalam kelompok harus membuat ide atau gagasan yang mereka dapat selama melakukan observasi tersebut. Waktu yang diberikan guru berkisar 10-15 menit. Setelah semua ide dari masing – masing anggota kelompok didapat, maka kelompok tersebut akan menuangkan ide tersebut dalam bentuk deskriptif teks. Penerapan Environmental Observation Strategy diharapkan bisa meningkatkan kemampuan dan motivasi belajar siswa, terutama dalam bidang menulis.

Reading is an important skill that is needed in order to get information from written text. In reading, the students not only must be able to read the text, but they also must be able to comprehend the text in order to get the meaning from the text. However, many students have difficulties in comprehending the text and lacking motivation in reading. It is because there is a tendency that the teachers do not use an interesting strategy that can attract students’ interest. That is why this paper is conducted in order to explain how to use Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading (USSR) strategy in teaching reading comprehension to senior high school students. USSR strategy is conducted by providing the students to select their own reading material based on their interest and read it silently about twenty minutes without any interruption. This strategy can make the students relaxed and enjoyed the reading process. It is believed that this strategy can help many students in improving their reading comprehension ability. This research aimed to find out the students’ difficult skills in answering reading section of TOEFL. The participants of this study were 26 students at English department in 2016 academic years. This study used proportional stratified sampling to choose the sample. The instrument used in this research was reading TOEFL test. The test consisted 50 questions multiple choice with 55 minutes. The study found that the last year English students of Universitas Negeri Padang had problems in 13 skills among 5 topics assessed. There were five most difficult items; main idea questions, stated detail questions, transition questions, context to determine meaning of simple words, and determine the tone of the passage.

AbstrakMakalah ini bertujuan untuk membahas tentang penggunaan Edmodo sebagai alat bantu pengajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa SMU.. Edmodo adalah salah satu media jejaring sosial yang dapat diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa SMU. Karena tampilan Edmodo ini mirip dengan jejaring sosial Facebook, penggunaan Edmodo akan sangat menarik bagi siswa yang senang menggunakan jejaring sosial. Sepintas Edmodo mirip dengan Facebook, tetapi Edmodo ini adalah micro blog untuk menghubungkan guru dan siswa dalam berinteraksi di luar pertemuan di kelas formal. Sebagai generasi yang sangat menyukai teknologi internet dan media jejaring sosial, penggunaan Edmodo dapat menarik minat siswa untuk belajar dan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris berupa posting status pada media ini yang biasa mereka lakukan pada website jejaring sosial, Facebook. Edmodo ini dapat digunakan sebagai media tambahan untuk belajar mandiri bagi para siswa. Penugasan berupa Tugas Rumah (PR) dapat dilakukan melalui media ini. Selain itu, siswa dapat ditugaskan untuk saling menyapa dan bercerita dalam bahasa Inggris di luar jam belajar di kelas. Untuk menggunakan Edmodo, baik guru maupun siswa mesti memiliki akun di website pendidikan ini. Cara menggunakan website ini akan dijabarkan lebih lengkap pada isi makalah ini. Diharapkan, dengan memanfaatkan ”educational micro blogging” ini akan semakin meningkatkan minat siswa terhadap Bahasa Inggris.Kata kunci : Social media, Edmodo, educational micro blogging.

AbstractPenelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya kemampuan siswa SMPN 34 Padang terhadap pemahaman membaca. Strategi konvensional dalam pengajaran membaca yang digunakan guru kurang tepat dalam meningkatkan keterampilan membaca pemahaman. Oleh sebab itu perlu diterapkan sebuah strategi pengajaran membaca yang berguna untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan strategi 3-2-1 pada kegiatan membaca. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat dampak penggunaan strategi 3-2-1 dalam kegiatan membaca terhadap pemahaman siswa dalam membaca. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuasi eksperimen dengan desain Nonequivalent Control Group Post Test Only Design. Populasi penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII SMPN 34 Padang tahun pelajaran 2016-2017 yang terdiri dari delapan kelas. Sampel penelitian yang diambil dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling ini terdiri dari dua kelas yaitu VIII 7 sebagai kelas experimen dan VIII 6 sebagai kelas control. Masing-masing kelas memiliki jumlah siswa 32 orang. Instrument yang digunakan adalah Reading Test yang terdiri dari tiga puluh butir soal dalam bentuk pilihan ganda. Tes tersebut dilakukan dua kali yaitu pre-test dan posttest. Setelah memberikan post-test didapat data berupa nilai reading test oleh kedua kelompok sampel yang kemudian dianalisis secara statistik dengan menggunakan rumus t-test, dan ditemukan bahwa t-hitung sebesar 4.45, sedangkan t-tabel sebesar 1.998, yang berarti t-hitung > t-tabel. pada taraf signifikasi 0.05. Berdasarkan hasil hitungan ini, disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan strategi 3-2-1 dalam pembelajaran membaca memberikan pengaruh yang lebih baik terhadap pemahaman siswa dalam membaca.
