Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out whether or not the PLEASE strategy is effective in the students’ ability in writing analytical exposition text at the second year of SMAN 1 Gunung Talang. This research uses a quantitative with quasi-experimental research with Pre-Test and Post-Test Control Group Design. The populations in this research were second year students’ of SMAN 1 Gunung Talang who were registered in the January-June period of the 2020/2021 school year. The research sample was 35 students of class XI IPA 1 as the experimental class and 35 students of class XI IPS 4 as the control class. The results of the analysis indicated that the mean of post-test score 85.37 was higher than the mean of pre-test score 67.23. Thus, in this research, the test scores were compared using of the t-test formula to determine the effectiveness of using PLEASE strategy ability in writing. Based on the data analysis and the results of the t-test, it was concluded that learning using PLEASE strategy was give the better effect to students ability in writing analytical exposition text at SMAN 1 Gunung Talang because tcount < ttable at a significant level of 0.05. So, it was concluded that the teaching of writing in the second year students of SMAN 1 Gunung Talang by using PLEASE strategy was better effect than without using PLEASE strategy. Keywords:PLEASE strategy, writing ability, analytical exposition

Abstract

Simple past tense is usually used to express an action or condition that occurred in or during the past time. Simple past tense refers to complete action that occured in the past. Since the purpose of recount text is to retell our experiences or event that happened in the past, past tense should be utilized in the text. Students can use severel tenses to write about the past condition, but the simple past tense is often used dominantly. Based on the research question mentioned previously, the purpose of this research as follow is to find out whether there is a correlation between simple past tense mastery and writing recount text ability of tenth graders students in SMA Pembangunan Lab UNP. The researcher will use quantitative method since the data concerned appears numbering. The researcher chose one class from seven classes of tenth grade students of SMA Pembangunan Lab UNP in the academic year of 2019/2020. The class that the writer chose was class which learned English Peminatan Program. The writer wants to observe namely students’ mastery in past tense and their ability in writing recount, two instruments are utilized. Both are in the form of test. And in this study the writer used two types of tests; objective test in the form of completion test and cloze test to test students’ past tense mastery and essay type test for testing students writing ability. To find out whether or not there is a relationship between students’ mastery of past tense and their ability in writing recount, the correlation coefficient showing the degree as well as the direction of the relationship between the two variables being investigated will be computed. Because there was always a possibility that the result of the study will show no relationship between the variables, the following Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used.

Abstract

This research was about the students' ability in comprehending TOEFL reading test at at English department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The research design was the descriptive research. The population of this study was third year students of English Education Study Program Academic Year 2017. The population was 148 students from 6 classes. The sample was taken by cluster random sampling technique so that the number of samples obtained was 22 samples. The instrument used was a reading TOEFL test for 60 minutes. The students’ comprehension ability was also analyzed in 5 types of reading comprehension skill. Based on this research, students' ability in comprehending TOEFL reading texts was poor. This finding indicated that the third-year students at English Department of UNP had less comprehension in reading TOEFL test.

Abstract

The main aim of the present study was to investigate EFL teachers critical thinking behaviors and the kinds of challenges they meet inside English language classrooms. A two-part questionnaire with twenty seven teaching behaviors and sixteen challenges was administered to sixty one Saudi EFL teachers at the secondary and intermediate teaching stages. Results showed that they regularly perform teaching behaviors that nurture their students' critical thinking skill. The most practiced behaviors were related to creating critical thinking-based student response while the least practiced behaviors were belonging to developing students' analysis and synthesis skills. Moreover, challenges related to English language school textbooks, classroom size, training and extra-curricular activities were all significant challenges that need urgent solutions.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aimed to invedtigate senor high school students’ ability in analyzing the meaing of song in English. the participant of this research were 20 students grade eleventh in SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP who take the English subject as their elective subject. This study is descriptive  research with qualitative approach. The result of the test given showed that the students’ ability in analyzing the meaning of song in English was in the category of poor. It was shown  by the students’ difficulties in elaborating their ideas into some pargaraphs and the students’ difficulties in concluding convincing evidence in the body paragraph.

Abstract

The learning process is transitioning to distance learning due to the pandemic. Along with online learning practices, teachers make online learning to support the teaching and learning process, such as providing learning materials and delivering learning materials using technology. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of English learning material during full online learning. The sample in this study was taken randomly with 135 students of SMA N 5 Padang, consisting of class 12 MIPA 1-7 and class 12 IPS 1-5. They were given 25 questions to explore their perceptions about English learning material during online learning. Quantitative descriptive is used in this research. The results showed that the students were neutral towards the learning material and the delivery of the material used during online learning. This was indicated by an average score of 2.83. However, they argue that the material used in online classes is more difficult than the material used in face-to-face learning. This makes students cannot decide their perceptions of learning material and delivery of material during online learning.

Abstract

AbstractWahyuni, Putri. (2020). Students’ Experience in Using Lesson Study in Microteaching Class at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. Thesis. Padang: English Language and Literature Department. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Universitas Negeri Padang.  Lesson Study is a learning improvement system originating from Japan. It is a new innovation in Microteaching classes to help students work collaboratively in the English Department of UNP. The purpose of this research is to find out students’ experience in using Lesson Study in Microteaching class. The population of this research is the third year students of the English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang. There were 70 students taken through purposive sampling as the sample. The instrument of this research was a questionnaire and interview to support the data. The questionnaire consisted of 54 questions and divided into four stages; Plan, Observation, Reflection, and Profit. The experience of the students in using Lesson Study was categorized into a negative experience, moderate, and positive experience. To support the data questionnaire the researcher made a description from the data interview. The result shows that the students’ experience in using Lesson Study is a positive experience. This fact was supported by the students’ mean score was 3,76 indicates a positive experience. The difficulty felt by the students was in the observation stage, and the most helpful stages were the reflection stage. Keywords: Experience, Lesson Study, Microteaching

Abstract

The aims of this research are to analyze the ability in producing acceptable Indonesian translation made by English Language Education students of Universitas Negeri Padang in translating English comic strip. This study was conducted by using descriptive research and using translation test as instrument collected from 36 students who have taken English-Indonesia Translation course in July-December 2020 of English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang. The sample in this research was chosen by using cluster random sampling. To get the trustworthiness of this research, this research applies the validator and three raters. The finding of this research showed that from 36 students, 17 (47.2 %) of them have excellent level of ability to produce acceptable translation, 18 students (50 %) have good level, and 1 student (2.8 %) has fairly good level of ability. In general students’ ability in producing acceptable Indonesian translation of comic strip is categorized as good level (79.9 %). Furthermore, the result of this research also showed that there are 17 students that produce acceptable translation, and 19 students that produce less acceptable translation in which the translation made by students sound still natural but there are inappropriate words or diction that are unfamiliar for the target readers.

Abstract

The teacher can use small group discussion in teaching writing procedure text in the teaching and learning process. By applying this method, the students can get interest and understanding procedure text well. The objective of this paper is to help the students to organize their ideas and write their ideas in a good order. Besides, the teacher also has to give more time for teaching writing especially in teaching text in order to increase the students’ ability in writing procedure text. Writing procedure texts through small group discussion bring the students to new kind of situation. It would help both the teacher and students to revise the students’ writing and made writing more fun than the way it used to be.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of speaking motivation of EFL students. The sample of this study consisted of 31 students who had participated in the Speaking Informal Interaction class in the English Department of UNP in the 2019 academic year. This research was a survey by distributing questionnaires and the results of the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively and descriptively. Students were given a questionnaire to find out their level of speaking motivation. The questionnaire used is the Attitude / Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). The results of this study indicate that in grades K5-19 in the course Speaking for Informal Interaction they have a high level of speaking motivation and few of them have a moderate level. None of them are at a low level of motivation. It can be concluded that this class has very high speaking motivation.
