Abstract

A translator should be able to convey the intended meaning contained in the source language into the target language. The result of initial observation is some of the students in translation class tend to translate without reading the whole text that might lead to misunderstanding of source text. There might be some other translation problems faced by the student translators. This study aims at analyzing the problems faced by the student translators in translating a historical recount text from English into bahasa Indonesia. This study used a descriptive method. The participants were the third year English Department Students who took translation as their elective course. The data were collected using Keylogging (Translog) tools for more representative data. The data were analyzed using a translation process procedure. The results indicate that there are ten problems founds in the students’ translation, they are the improper use of generalization technique, improper of borrowing technique, target language structure, meaning deletion, the improper use of literal technique, context misunderstanding, target language interference, meaning addition, inability to find right equivalent, source text misunderstanding. These problems are mainly caused by the students’ low translation skills.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the condition this time. The teachers start to use multimedia to teach the students in the distance learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the perception of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP towards multimedia in English learning online. This research was a descriptive study using a quantitative approach with the data collection technique using a questionnaire. The sample in this study was 87 students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The data analysis technique used descriptive analysis was stated in the form of a percentage. The result showed the students' perception of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP towards multimedia in learning English online. In detail, as many as; 8 students (9.20%) had very less positive perceptions, 17 students (19.54%) had less positive perceptions, 27 students (31.03%) had quite positive perceptions, 35 students (40, 23%) had positive perceptions, and no students had very positive perceptions. The highest frequency is 40.23%, which is in the positive category. Thus the students’ perception of the use of multimedia in learning English online at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP was positive.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate senior high school students’ ability in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English and the difficulties faced by the students in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English. The participants of this research were 19 eleventh grade students in SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP Padang who take the English subject as their elective subject. This study is descriptive research with quantitative approach. The instrumentation of this research is test. The result showed that the level mastery of the students in analyzing the poetic element of poem in English is poor. Based on the data taken, the hardest poetic element for students is onomatopoeia and the easiest is simile. And it can be concluded that students' ability in analyzing the poetic elements of poem in English is and students have difficulty in analyzing poetic elements.Key words: ability, difficulties, poetic elements

Abstract

Authentic assessment can help teachers to find out the extent to which students can apply their knowledge and skills in the context of real situations. This is because authentic assessment focuses on activities or tasks performed by students after all the knowledge and skills being taught are adapted to the actual context. The researcher conducted the implementation of authentic assessment on reading comprehension in the tenth grade. The population and sample of this study were tenth-grade students and English teachers at SMA 8 Padang. This research uses descriptive quantitative research. This study aims to understand the form of authentic reading assessment, the level of difficulty, and the problems faced by the teacher in implementing the authentic assessment. The research instruments were documentation, questionnaire, and interviews. The results of the study found that (1) 4 forms of authentic assessment of reading comprehension used by teachers at SMAN 8 Padang, (2) the level of difficulty in implementing authentic assessment of reading comprehension was easy carried out by students, and (3) several problems faced by teachers in implementing of authentic assessment on reading comprehension.

Abstract

The present research aims to figure out (1) types of oral feedback used by teachers’ in EFL classroom interaction (2) teachers’ reasons for using oral feedback in EFL classroom interaction, and (2) students’ perceptions about teachers’ oral feedback in EFL classroom interactions. The study employed qualitative descriptive research with the three teachers of SMP Negeri 10 Batam and also students for grade seven, eight and nine as the participants. Observation and Stimulated Recall Interview (SIR) were used to conduct the data, and the data were analysed by using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The result of this research showed that the teachers used 6 types of oral feedback, namely correction, recast, clarificationrequest, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation and repetitionfrom the theory of (Lightbown and Spada, 1999). However, the average of teachers’ oral feedback use showed a low percen teachers employed oral feedback because of teachers’ responsibility and obligation to provide it, the effective and efficient feedback mode, the utility of oral feedback, positive effect to students, and consequences of none of oral feedback.Through a stimulated recall interview, the teachers admitted that they are still not optimal in providing input to the students. Mostly, the perceived positively to oral feedback. Some students found felt sensitive to oral feedback. Nevertheless, they still realized to its positive effect on the result of their work or performance

Abstract

As EFL learners who learn English as their major at school, they still face difficulties to speak with appropriate and correct grammar. It causes some mistakes and errors with grammar when they speak. The purposes of this research are to identify and classify the type of errors in students’ speaking performance based on linguistic category in morphological and syntactical level, and to find out the causes of EFL learners make grammatical errors based on intralingual aspect. The research design was qualitative descriptive research. The sources of this research data is from students' voice recordings when the researcher interviewed them by phone one by one. The participant of this research was thirty second year students majoring English in Universitas Negeri Padang which enrolled in 2019. The interview was used to collect the data, and the data were analyzed by using Linguistic Category Classification from Politzer and Ramirez. Based on the result of data analysis, 16 kinds of grammatical errors were found. The dominant kind of grammatical error which if found in EFL learners’ speaking was simple past tense. Then, for the causes of EFL learners’ error in intralingual transfer aspect based on James theory was incomplete rule application, overlooking co-occurrences restriction, overgeneralization, and exploiting redundancy.

Abstract

The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia is causing some changes in various sectors, such as education in Indonesia. All schools are required to carry out online learning. Along with online learning practices, teachers use online learning to support the teaching and learning process, such as providing learning materials and delivering learning materials by utilizing technology. This study aims to explore students' perception of English learning materials during online learning using UNP e-learning. The samples in this study were taken randomly and selected one grade K4 2019 with a total of 29 students. They were asked 27 questions to explore their perceptions of UNP's e-learning use during online learning. Descriptive quantitative was used in this study. In general, almost all students feel that the use of UNP e-learning can contribute positively to their learning. The results showed that UNP e-learning is easy to use (M = 4.41) and UNP's E-learning contributes positively to students' learning experience (M = 4.14) as the most important characteristics of effective use of UNP e-learning. Overall, stakeholder perceptions are in a good category. Although there were still some students who complained about some problems through the use of e-learning UNP.

Abstract

This study aimed to highlight the students’ strategies in developing English vocabulary applied by fourth-year English education students of Padang State University and to expose students’ reasons by using vocabulary learning strategies based on Gu and Johnson theory (1996). The instrumentations of this research were questionnaire and interviews. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The result of this research showed that students used Metacognitive strategies (95,58%), Beliefs strategies (92,34%), and Cognitive strategies (81,78%) to develop their English vocabulary. In more specific, it showed that students were dominated to use five vocabulary learning strategies: 1) Bottom up (98%), 2) Top down (96%), 3) Self-initiation (96%), 4) Selective Attention (95%), and 5) Guessing (95%). It also revealed that there were three points of students’ reasons in using vocabulary learning strategies: 1) Students wanted to know the meaning of the words in detail. 2) Students wanted to remember the new words longer. 3) Students claimed that the strategy they chose was more efficient, comfortable, suitable and understandable strategy.

Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the subject-verb agreement errors in students’ speaking performance, finding out mostly the types of errors in applying the subject-verb agreement also finding out the source of errors made by the second-year students of English department of UNP. This research applied a descriptive qualitative research design with 28 students who participated in this study. The data of the research were collected through a test instrument. The test instrument covers a speaking test in a report form. All of the errors that were identified in subject-verb agreement were analyzing by using Surface Strategy Taxonomy introduced by Dulay et,al. the result of data analysis showed that the students contributed into four types of errors in subject-verb agreement’s term, they are (1) omission (38 errors / 25 %), (2) addition (47 errors / 27%). (3) misformation ( 76 / 45%), (4) misordering (10 errors / 6%). Furthermore, the research also found the sources of errors made by the students during his/her speaking report test, the frequent sources of errors are Intralingual transfer there are totally (100 errors / 57%), Interlingual transfer (45 errors / 25%), communication strategy ( 17 errors / 10 %) and the last one is context of learning ( 14 errors / 8%)

Abstract

This study aimed  to investigate the level of speaking anxiety among the second-year students of the English Department at Universitas Negeri Padang, who enrolled in 2017/2018 academic year. Descriptive quantitative approach was applied in this study by collecting both quantitative and qualitative data to be analyzed and presented through a simple statistics formula. Stratified random sampling was employed to determine the sample; meanwhile, the data were collected by using a close-ended and an open-ended online questionnaire that was distributed through SurveyMonkey platform. The findings revealed that most of the students were experiencing a high level of speaking anxiety (68.85%). This study also discovered that among the six principles of the causal factors of speaking anxiety, the classroom management factor had been the most chosen factor that the students experienced during the learning speaking process. Meanwhile, the least chosen factor was the instructor beliefs about the language teaching.
