Abstract

Discovery Learning as one of the methods proposed by the 2013 curiculum are  suggested learning methods for teachers to increase students' activeness and critical thinking. However, discovery learning also has its downside such as it can be a very time-consuming method. This advantages and disadvantages resulted in microteaching students having different perceptions on the discovery learning. The purpose of this study is to describe students’ perceptions of discovery learning in microteaching class at English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The sample for this research was 56 microteaching students of English Department in Universitas Negeri Padang. The data collection technique used in this research was a questionnaire with 6 indicators through google form application. Therefore, the results of this study showed that the majority of microteaching students in English Department had a positive or good perception of the implementation of discovery learning. The students agree that the use of discovery learning motivates students to be more active in class, improves students’ critical thinking, interpretation, communication, collaboration skills. However, the microteaching students still encounter obstacles to encourage the students to answer the question and be active in the class.

Abstract

The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, has released a textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris Textbook for Grade 10 Students. This research aimed to determine to what extent the feasibility of the content and presentation of the textbook are. This research is an evaluative research. The data of this research were taken from Bahasa Inggris Textbook for Grade 10 Students Published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture and were analyzed using the evaluation format proposed by BSNP (2014). The evaluation format contains 18 indicators that are used to determine the quality of the textbook. The result of this research showed that the aspect of feasibility of the content is fulfilled 71.5% or categorized good, while the feasibility of the presentation got 72.3% or categorized good. By referring to the results above, this textbook can be categorized as a good reference since there are only 3 of 18 indicators that were not fulfilled; 1) the completeness of the material, 2) development of diversity, and 3) focus on the scientific approach and learning model discovery learning, and project-based learning. In contrast, the other 15 criteria have been fulfilled by this book.

Abstract

In EFL context mostly, teachers pose questions to check students’ understanding and stimulate students’ curiosity. There are many types of questions that can be asked by teachers. Each question gives a different influence on students’ thinking levels. This research was intended to analyze the most types of questions asked by teachers in EFL classroom activity in SMPN Kota Padang. This research is descriptive research. It involved observing and describing the behaviour of a subject, also using the written data from Geschool without influencing it in any way. The subjects of this research were 18 teachers from 6 schools selected by using random sampling technique. The techniques of data collection were classroom observation-video recordings and written questions from Geschool. The findings of this research are the most type of questions asked by teachers in EFL classroom activity in SMPN Kota Padang is the common level of questions asked by teachers in EFL classroom activity in SMAN Kota Padang is remembering (C1) category, with 155 questions (40,15 % of the total questions) which is the lowest level of thinking in cognitive domain.

Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental research. The purpose of this research is to find out the effect of digital flashcard on students’ vocabulary mastery at SMPN 12 Padang. The population of this research were the first-year students of SMPN 12 Padang. The research sample was 27 students of class VII.3 as the experimental class and 27 students of class VII.9 as the control class. The instrument of this research was vocabulary test that was conducted into two tests, pre-test and post-test. The instrumentation was created into 20 short answer questions. Based on the data analysis by using Paired Sample T-test in SPSS 26 for windows, the mean of pre-test score in experimental class was 47.2 while the mean of post-test score in experimental class was 82.0. It can be concluded that the students’ who are taught by using digital flashcard as teaching media are better than students’ who are taught by using conventional media. The significance of the test is 0.000 which is lower than the significance level that is 0.05 with 5% of degree. Moreover, it is also found that the students’ score is improving especially for the students in experimental class which gained 34.8 of their average score.

Abstract

To achieve the objective of learning especially in critical reading course, it is important to provide a good teaching material. One of the important things to do before developing the materials is analyzing the needs of the students. This study aims to analyze studens’ needs on critical reading learning material at English department of UNP. This research was a descriptive study using a quantitative approach with the data collection technique using the combination of closed-ended and open-ended questionnaire. The respondents in this study were 80 students from 2018 at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang who had taken critical reading course. They were given 25 closed-ended questions and three open-ended questions. The results showed that in the aspect The Important of Topic Variation was categorized as “very important” (82%), The Importance of Tasks in Critical Reading was categorized as “important” (81%), Topic for Critical was categorized as “important”. There were 96.25% students expected to have the improvement in the term of topics in Critical Reading Materials. There were 80% students wanted the improvement in the aspect of tasks. Then, 50% of 80 students wanted the improvement in term of skills.

Abstract

Writing anxiety is a problem faced by the students in writing class. This anxiety can prevent the students from achieving the best understanding in writing. When a student is experiencing a writing anxiety, they will not be able to combine the sentences each other. This will make them get a low result in writing test. This research aims to see the correlation between writing anxiety and writing achievement of Paragraph Writing class in English Department at UniversitasNegeri Padang. This study used a descriptive research method. The population of this research was all English college students of the second semester World Health Organization were already learned Paragraph Writing course in January- June 2020. They were selected because they had taken a course on paragraph writing. The sample was 48 students taken using a cluster random sampling. The informasi were collected using questionnaire from Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory(SLWAI) and writing test to get the result from the writing achievement, which has been administered twice in order to get more reprehensive information. The results show that SLWAI and writing test have nomor correlation with the Pearson Correlation( r=-. 052) which indicated that whenever students have a high writing anxiety so it is possible for them to get the high or low achievement itself. Furthermore, this research related to writing achievement and writing anxiety is suggested to do.

Abstract

Curriculum 2013 created some changes in the regulations and method used during the learning process. One of which is the existence of elective classes in Senior High School level, including English elective class. This class aimed to give the opportunity for the students to learn other subject outside their compulsory subjects based on their interest and passion. This regulation also existed in Islamic High School. There are more compulsory subjects in this school rather than in the regular school. Therefore, this study aimed to explore Islamic Senior High School students’ attitude toward literature in English. The participants of this research were 24 students of twelve-grade in science specialization class of MAN 1 Kota Bukittinggi. The sample was chosen using purposive sampling technique. The criterion for choosing the sample was the students who took English in elective class. This study employed descriptive research. The instrumentations of this research were questionnaire as the primarily and interview as the secondary to get deeper information. There were several categories asked to the students, which were students’ favorite genre of literature, advantages of literature, language preference in the classroom, and also the influence of numerous subjects in Islamic high school. Overall, the result of this research showed that students of Islamic Senior High School have positive attitude toward literature in English.

Abstract

The PPG (Pendidikan Profesi Guru) program is a government effort to improve the quality of education in Indonesia by increasing teacher professionalism. The purpose of the PPG program itself is to overcome problems in the world of education. This research is conducted to obtain information from English teachers in West Sumatra who have graduated from the PPG Program at least two years ago (from 2019 backwards) regarding the impact of PPG program on English teachers’ pedagogical and professional competencies. 45 in-service and 11 pre-service English teachers have been involved as the sample of this research. The type of this research is survey research with quantitative method. The data were collected by using close-ended and open-ended questionnaire distributed through Google-form. The findings of this research show that UNP PPG Program has impacted decently on English teachers' performance and improved their professional and pedagogical competencies. Although there are some teachers who assess their teaching performance as not good enough in several points of the statement in the questionnaire, most of the results show that the UNP PPG Program has improved the teaching performance of English teachers. The results and findings from this study are expected to improve the process of conducting PPG program and pay more attention to the impact that will be received by PPG graduates.

Abstract

To develop a good material, materials developer needs to evaluate the previous materials being used by using the criteria of good materials. This study aims to evaluate the critical reading materials at English Language Department of Universitas Negeri Padang based on Cunningsworth checklist. This research was a descriptive study using a quantitative approach with the instrument of data collection technique using a questionnaire. The respondents in this study were four lecturers of English Language Department of Universitas Negeri Padang who had ever experienced in teaching critical reading course. They were given 50 questions to evaluate the teaching materials in critical reading course. The results showed that Aims and Approaches was categorized as “Fair” (64%), Design and Organization was categorized as “Sufficient” (59%), Language Content was categorized as “Fair” (72%), Skills was categorized as “Fair” (71%), Topics was  categorized as “Fair” (63%), Methodology was categorized as “Sufficient” (58%), and Practical Considerations was categorized as “Fair” (60%). Overall, the quality of this material was categorized as “Fair” with the total was 64%. It still needs improvements in several aspects for example: The coverage of the materials based on what is needed, the usage of different teaching and learning styles, the made up components of materials package, the organization of the materials (according to the structures, functions, topics, and skills).

Abstract

This research was aim to analyze how teachers' and students’ perceptions toward online English teaching and learning in the Covid-19 Pandemic. In this research, the researcher used an online questionnaire that consisted of 15 statements for teachers and 27 for students. The participants were 8 English teachers and 140 XI grade students at SMAN 1 and SMAN 2 Torgamba. This study applied a descriptive quantitative design. The findings from the data analysis, most teachers give a positive perception of online English learning with a mean score of 2.57. The process of learning English was easier with online during this pandemic but still, the teachers prefer conventional teaching in the future. Then, most students also give a positive perception of online English teaching and learning with a mean score was 2.54. The process of learning English was easier and could foster students’ independent learning attitudes but still, the students also found some problems in implementing this learning.
