Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

This research was aimed to find out the students’accuracy in translating positive politeness markers in the novel “Dilan 1990” at third year students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The subject of this research was the third year students of English department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The focus is the students’ accuracy in translating positive politeness markers. This research is qualitative descriptive study. Out of 60 students, 35% of them were chosen to be the sample by using cluster random sampling. The data were collected by using test. The results of this research show the students’ accuracy was (76%). Related to the result found, the students’ accuracy in translating positive politeness markers was good. The difficulty in translation cannot be seen from the type of strategy used only, but also many aspects affect the result of students’ translation. Based on the research that the author did, students need to know about the context and situation appear in each utterance. The most commonly problems that the students did in their translation process is they did not pay attention to the whole context. There were also some changes in the strategy used in politeness. It is shown by the utterances strategy change in their translation product. The understanding politeness strategy gives an advantage for the students in producing accurate translation product.

During COVID-19 pandemic, many schools are required to conduct distance learning or online learning. Google classroom is one of the learning media that can be used during a pandemic. The application can be a medium for learning English in various schools. It can be a communication tool for students and teachers during online learning activities. This study aims to see and analyze how students' perceptions and motivations in learning English during the Covid-19 pandemic. As well as measuring the positive or negative perceptions of students and the level of student motivation. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative. the instrument of this research were the questionnaires and interview. The questionnaire containing 73 items was distributed to 235 students in order to get data. The researcher found that students had a positive perception of google classroom as an online learning medium with a mean of 2.64.However, in its use in English skills lessons, students have negative perceptions with a mean of 2,47. In addition, the researchers also found that students are less motivated to learn English when using Google Classroom with a mean of 2.39. in conclusion, although students have a positive perception of google classroom in learning English, students are still less motivated to learn by using google classroom.

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 created new changes in education system in Indonesia. Education is demanded to fulfill standardization. The students are also demanded to have good ability in reading comprehension. This study is aimed to find out the level of the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text by using Barrett’s taxonomy in SMAN 1 Lubuk Alung. The population was the eleventh grade students in academic year 2021/2022 who have learned narrative text in tenth grade with the total 359 students. Based on the population, the sample of this research is two classes consisted of 80 students selected using cluster random sampling. This research is descriptive quantitative research and used test and questionnaire as the instruments. This research found that the mean of the students’ score was 64.525 and it was categorized in good category. Besides that, the students have good ability in answering the questions in form of appreciation level. This study also found that students tent to have difficulty in answering questions in form of evaluation level.

The purpose of this study was to analyze students' perception of online learning in micro-teaching class at English department of UNP. The sort of study that will use a survey approach to perform quantitative descriptive research. The population in this study were all students of the 2018 English Department UNP entrance year. This study uses a proportional random sampling technique, proportional random sampling is a sampling technique where all members have the same opportunity to be sampled according to their proportions, large or small population. From the slovin formula, it can be seen that 105 students will be sampled in this research by distributing questionnaires using a Likert scale. In addition, the data obtained were described, then a description of the research results was carried out using SPSS and the categorization based on the Mean and Standard Deviation.

Regarding that the ability to master clause and phrase construction affects the effectiveness and quality of the writing and reading, yet the studies about clause reduction are counted less in amount, it needs to be further examined. The objectives of this study are to find out the ability of English department students in reducing adjective clauses into participial phrases. The population of this research were 162 the second year English Department Students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The sample was 30 students chosen by using cluster sampling technique. Quantitative approach and descriptive method were used to analyze and describe the data which was gained from the test instrument. In general, the results show that averagely the students have such a fair level of mastery of the reduction of adjective clauses with average score 63.9. Indeed, specifically, they have good ability in changing the adjective clause to present, past or appositive and fair ability in correcting the errors. In addition, regarding the Arikunto’s standardized category, it was found that 33.3% students have good ability, and a couple of 20% students were categorized excellent and fair. In addition, 16.7% students were classified poor while 10% of them were noted fail.

This research aims at finding out the translation quality and the difficulties faced by the third year students of Universitas Negeri Padang in translating a hortatory exposition text. The data of this research were the translation quality and the difficulties faced in translating a hortatory exposition text entitled Bersama Atasi Covid-19. The data were collected by using a translation test and analyzed by using the TQA model by Sofyan and Tarigan (2019) and four components by Sari (2018). To gain the trustworthiness of the research, this research applies the validator and the raters. The finding shows that translation quality of students in translating hortatory text was 80 in almost completely successful level. There are 18 students (60%) categorized into successful level, 12 students (40%) in almost completely successful level, and no one (0%) in adequate, inadequate, and totally inadequate level. Furthermore, there were three thirteen mistakes found in the finding which grammatical structure is the most frequent mistake made by the students.

Abstract The level of reading comprehension questions is very important for students especially English for Specific Purpose students. This research aims to find out the levels of reading comprehension questions and to investigate the English lecturers’ opinions related to the levels of reading comprehension questions based on Revised Taxonomy Bloom used in reading questions on English for Health course book. This study used a descriptive study that tries to portray the use of Taxonomy Blooms revise used in English course book for health students. This research used an English course book for health students entitled “English for Health” by Eka Susilowati and Agustin Widiani. The instruments of this research were observation checklist and interview guide. The observation checklist contained six components of the cognitive process of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. There were two findings of this research, they were: first, the levels of reading comprehension questions based on Revised Taxonomy Bloom used in reading questions on English for Health textbook was lower order thinking. Second, based on the English teachers’ opinion there were three adjustments that were made by the English teacher to the tasks in order to cater for higher order thinking process in the classroom. First, the teachers modify the questions based on the passage from other teaching material, the teachers make some questions which included higher level of thinking based on the passage that has been read before, the teachers give some projects to the students. The method of teaching is considered as the factors to reach the objectives of learning English of the EFL students in Indonesia. The method of teaching that was used in this research was called Teacher-in-Role. Teacher-in-Role is one of the strategies used in the classroom that involves the use of dramatic activities and performances as strategies within classroom instruction to give more meaningful of students’ life experiences, ideas and issues through imagined situation, with the teacher as facilitator, simulator or an actor on purpose of reaching the learning outcomes. This descriptive qualitative research attempted to find out how the students’ engagement during the practice of Teacher-in-Role (TiR), and also to find out their opinions of using TiR in the classroom. There were 32 students involved in this research. The result of the study showed that the engagement of the student in the classroom during the practice of TiR were in positive nature, from the three indicators; behavioural engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement. The results showed the students had positive engagement and seemed they had interest during activities in total three meetings of practicing the TiR in English lessons. The perception of the students also gave a positive impact toward the TiR in the classroom. In general the students were having fun and enjoyed the learning process by practicing TiR. Even though some students claimed that they have some difficulties speaking English due to the lack of vocabulary they have.

Coherence is one of the characteristics of good writing. It is important for student to know how to use the way to achieve coherence in their writing. Therefore, it is also important to analyze students’ use of the ways to achieve coherence when using coherence in writing. This research implemented descriptive quantitative approach to analyze the use of ways to achieve coherence in the essays written by the English Language and Literature Department students. The data was 30 essays, 20% of the total source of data (152 students). The data were gathered from the essays written by the students at final semester exam for Essay Writing course. After the data were analyzed, the results showed that all four of the ways to achieve coherence were found in the essays analyzed. The results from the most used ways to achieve coherence to the least one are: the repetition of key noun (463 times, 48.28%), the use of transition signals (405 times, 42.23%), the consistent of pronoun (71 times, 2.37%) and the use of logical order (20 times, 2.09%). This result showed student familiarity to the ways of achieving coherence. However, a special care in teaching the use of pronoun as one of the way to achieve coherence, alongside other ways.

This study was descriptive research which aimed to find out distribution of questions for examination within cognitive domains in SMP Negeri 15 Padang. The data were derived from examination questions. The questions from examination were analyzed and classified based on cognitive levels of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001). The examination questions were collected from grade VII, VIII, and IX. The results of the study show that there are significant imbalances in the distribution of questions within cognitive levels for examination. From all grades, LOTS-based questions dominantly found in examination question. Specifically, Understanding (C2) and Applying (C3) level of questions dominated the distribution of questions in SMP Negeri 15 Padang. Meanwhile, only Analyzing (C4) level of question found in HOTS category. However, the percentages of HOTS-based questions are higher than LOTS-based questions found in examination.
