Abstract

This paper is aimed at describing the use of ‘Story Mapping’ to improve students’ comprehending in reading narrative text at junior high school students. This technique is applied to help junior high school students to understanding andcomprehending narrative text. This technique enables students to solve the problem by using story mapping sheet given to them. By using this technique, the students are allowed to read the narrative text and determine the appropriate part of the text to each part of the sheet on story mapping.

Abstract

AbstrakThis study was to see the implementation of Problem Based Learning as one of strategies in learning descriptive text toward students speaking ability in describing people, things or places. It was done to the students at the first grade of X2 and X6 at SMAN 1 Enam Lingkung registered in 2012/2013. The data of the study were collected through tests. The findings of the study showed that experimental group taught by the problem based learning methods have better ability than control group which is taught by the conventional method. So, it can conclude that the used of Problem based learning in teaching descriptive text can improve students’ speaking ability in expressing description about people, things and places.Keyword: implementation, Problem Based Learning, speaking ability, descriptive

Abstract

This article discusses about an interactive game that can encourage students to speak communicatively. The game named Just a Minute Game. Just a Minute game is a simple game but effective to improve students’ speaking skill. The rule of the game is the students speak in one minute about a topic given by teacher without hesitation, repetition, and deviation. If the students break the rule, the other students can take the chance by saying “Challenge”. The teacher can choose the students who will continue the speech with the same topic. The student who can speak in one minute without breaking the rule will be the winner of the game. Through this game, the students are expected to be interested in learning English, especially in speaking.

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisa dan mendeskripsikan teknik-teknik yang digunakan, keakuratan serta kejelasan dalam menerjemahkan istilah minuman dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan 30 istilah minuman Indonesia sebagai instrumen. Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah 30 orang mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra Inggris bidang Linguistik yang masuk tahun akademik 2009/2010 yang dipilih dengan menggunakan cluster random sampling. Dari hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa terdapat 16 teknik yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan istilah minuman dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris. Keenambelas teknik itu adalah established equivalent 48.67%, borrowing 17.56%, generalization 8.78%, literal translation 5.22%, calque 4.78%, Omission 4.33%, description 2.89%, adaptation 2.56%, amplification 2.56%, reduction 1%, particularization 0.89%, calque plus translation 0.11%, reduction plus established equivalent 0.22%, borrowing plus generalization 0.11%, borrowing plus adaptation 0.22 %, adaptation dan established equivalent 0.11%. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa teknik menggunakan bentuk lazim dalam TL (established equivalent technique) merupakan teknik yang paling dominan dan paling cocok digunakan dalam menerjemahkan istilah minuman. Dapat disimpulkan juga bahwa penerjemahan istilah minuman dalam penelitian ini berada pada level akurat dan sangat jelas. Kata kunci: penerjemahan, teknik penerjemahan, ketepatan, kejelasan.

Abstract

The current study was carried out with the intention of investigating the EFL student teachers’ Language Learning Strategies (LLS) in learning English. This study also aims for exploring the level of using LLS and identifying the most and least preferred strategy employed by EFL student teachers at English Language Education Program, Universitas Negeri Padang. This research used a descriptive quantitative method. The total sampling technique is used to all participants of EFL student teachers grouped at International classes enrolled in 2017-2019. The data were gathered through the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire version 7.0 developed by Oxford and administered to all 82 international EFL student teachers. SILL consists of 50 statements which have six categories as well as Memory, Cognitive, Compensation, Metacognitive, Affective, and Social. The data were analyzed through M.Excel and SPSS version 25. The result indicated all international EFL student teachers employed all strategies categorized as the High level with the average Mean score (M=3.80). The most frequently used is Metacognitive strategy (M=4.01) and the least frequently used is Affective strategy (M=3.53). It can be concluded that language learning strategies are important in raising the learners’ learning awareness and improve educators’ teaching preference.

Abstract

Abstrak Tulisan ini dibuat untuk mengetahui bahwa kegiatan running dictation pada pengajaran skill menulis dapat menghasilkan pencapaian hasil belajar seperti ,mengeja, membuat kalimat, dan lain sebagainya,  yang lebih bagus dari pada cara pengajaran traditional  yang biasanya lebih cenderung menggunakan  metode ceramah. Running dictation hadir dengan  konsep yang menyenangkan dan aktif. Abstract

Abstrak Salah satu tujuan dari Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP 2006) mata pelajaran bahasa inggris adalah mampu menulis bagi siswa/siswi di sekolah tinggi menengah keatas. Sehingga, siswa harus bisa dan mampu menulis teks monolog sesuai dengan tuntutan kurikulum. Namun, seringkali ditemui siswa yang mengalami masalah pada saat menulis. Karena siswa merasa mereka tidak punya ide tentang topik yang diberikan atau yang akan ditulis, khususnya pada discussion text. Dalam hal ini guru hendaknya bisa menggunakan strategi yang bisa membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis discussion text. Makalah ini menjelaskan tentang penggunaan strategi Opinionnaires sebagai salah satu strategi menulis. Strategi ini diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran menulis Discussion text dikelas untuk membantu mengatasi permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh siswa dengan memberikan lembaran opinionnaires. Didalam penggunaan strategi ini ada beberapa tahap yang perlu dilakukan, yaitu pre-teaching, whilst-teaching (pre-writing to arrange or warm up the ideas – opinionnaires, writing a draft to divide it, and writing as the final), dan post-teaching. Dengan menggunakan strategi ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi pada pelajaran menulis khususnya pada discussion text, sehingga siswa mampu menulis teks ini dengan baik dan benar. Abstract

ABSTRAK Makalah ini membahas tentang pengajaran berbicara bahasa inggris dengan menggunakan Talking Cards. Penulis melihat bahwa siswa dalam kemampuan berbicara masih kurang. Penyebabnya adalah kurang percaya diri, takut akan kesalahan ucapan, dan takut akan ditertawakan oleh siswa lain. Oleh karena itu, penulis memberikan solusi dengan penggunaan media pembelajaran yang interaktif melalui Talking Cards. Talking Cards merupakan suatu permainan yang dimainkan melalui kartu bermain yang berjumlah 52 (lima puluh dua); terbagi dalam empat jenis yaitu spade, heart, club dan diamond). Penulis membuat makalah ini bertujuan: (1) menggambarkan bagaimana guru bahasa inggris menggunkakan Talking Cards untuk siswa sekolah tingkat pertama, (2) menjelaskan langkah-langkah pengajaran berbicara siswa sekolah tingkat pertama dengan menggunakan Talking Cards secara rinci. Penulis berharap makalah ini dapat bermanfaat sehingga guru bahasa inggris dapat berkreasi sendiri dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa. Abstract

This paper discusses the application of hopscotch game as one of the techniques in the teaching aspect of speaking English which focused on Elementary School students. The aim is to help students more interested in learning English. This paper will explain: 1) The procedure for applying hopscotch game in teaching speaking. 2) The advantages of using hopscotch game in teaching speaking. The writer will explain the teaching materials, teaching media, and procedures in implementing hopscotch game in teaching speaking. The conclusion shows that:1) There is an example of teaching procedure in speaking English using hopscotch game, 2) Hopscotch game makes students enjoy the learning to talk, and it can be a way to motivate students in teaching and learning English. Therefore it is expected that the teachers can implement a variety of techniques such as hopscotch game in the teaching speaking to make the learning process more interested and enjoyable. The students are expected to be active in practicing speaking English without fear of making mistakes because the teachers will improve and help them better in speaking English.

Abstract

Based on observations in the field, in the process of learning some students had difficulty in reading texts in English. Especially for elementary schools, they are not really interested and bored reading in English due to the lack of creativity of teachers in creating interesting activities, so that students have difficulty learning English and boredom. To solve the above problems, then there is some activity of which can be applied. One of these activities is a Bandits game and Sheriff. Bandits and Sheriff game appropriate to teach reading to elementary school students. The game is in accordance with the provisions of the Education Unit Level Curriculum (SBC) (2006), which requires learning to read at elementary students focus on reading aloud a word, phrase, clause, and sentence is very simple. In this game, the teacher divides students into two groups: the Bandits group and Sheriffs groups as well as giving the same number to each member of the group. The game begins when the teacher mentioned a thing to be taken as well as the serial number of the Bandit Sheriff. Bandit and Sheriff who are called must get the object and match the object with the words contained in the right side of the table. Once successful, they have to read it and spell it.AbstrakBerdasarkan pengamatan dilapangan, dalam proses belajar mengajar sebagian siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam membaca teks dalam bahasa Inggris. Khususnya bagi sekolah dasar, mereka tidak begitu tertarik dan merasa bosan membaca dalam bahasa Inggris dikarenakan kurangnya kreativitas guru dalam menciptakan kegiatan yang menarik,sehingga siswa mengalami kesulitan dan kebosanan belajar bahasa Inggris. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan diatas, maka ada beberapa kegitan yang dapat diterapkan. Salah satu kegiatan tersebut adalah permainan Bandits and Sheriff. PermainanBandits and Sheriff sesuai untuk mengajarkan membaca pada siswa sekolah dasar. Permainan ini sesuai dengan ketetapan Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP) (2006) yang mewajibkan pembelajaran membaca pada siswa dasar berfokus pada membaca lantang kata, frasa, clausa, dan kalimat sangat sederhana. Dalam permainan ini, guru membagi siswa ke dalam kedua kelompok yaitu kelompok Bandits dan kelompok Sheriffs serta memberikan nomor urut yang sama untuk setiap anggota kelompok. Permainan dimulai ketika guru menyebutkan sebuah benda yang harus diambil serta nomor urut Bandit dan Sheriff. Bandit dan Sheriff yang terpanggil harus mendapatkan benda tersebut dan mencocokan benda dengan tulisan yang terdapat di sisi kanan meja.
