Journal of English Language Teaching
Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

AbstractSpeaking is one of the skills learned and practiced the first high school students in English language lessons. In this paper, the author discusses speak English teaching activities in the classroom by using Crazy Story Game. In this activity, each student wrote a card in the verb and the verb cannot show that they wrote it to other students. After that, the teacher tells the beginning of the story to the students and for students who invoked his name to continue the story using the verbs they wrote earlier. After the student had to use the verb to guess what word is write the other students. All students have the opportunity to continue the story. For students who guess the most widely used verb other students as the winner in this game. Crazy Story This game can make students speak English and make them creative in using the English language.Key words: speaking, crazy story game

In this modern area, many children prefer to play rather than learning, especially in English language which is not understood by the children. Because of that, the teacher should develop how to teach English to the young learners without making the child bored in learning. Therefore, to make the children wants to learn English the teacher can teach them by playing because the children love to play. In writing this paper, the author will discuss about the using of Fun-brain to increase the intelligence of a child's brain to know English. Fun - Brain is games that can be done online by teaching English to the young learners and to get know the English language through play. By playing, the young learners can study harder and memorizing vocabulary that they find in Fun – Brain game. Teachers can teach English to play and to make the children happy in learning English, so that the children can use the English that they learned in their daily life. This paper is expected to provide new insights for teachers or education to improve learning and teaching English for young learners which is usually at an early age, the child's brain formation will begin to form and will continue to grow along with the child's age. With the strategy of Fun - Brain can be used to form the brains of young learners up is not too difficult to recognize a foreign language to him. Also expected to increase the motivation of the young learners to learn by playing.

Snake Word Game is a chain word game that teacher writes a letter, after that the firs student must write a word with that letter. The following student writes a word beginning with the last letter of previous word. Snake Word Game expected to help teacher in teaching English vocabulary and make students easier to memorize some vocabularies. ABSTRAK Snake word Game adalah sebuah permainan kata berantai yang mana guru menulis huruf, kemudian siswa pertama harus menulis kata yang awalnya harus sama dengan kata yang di tulis guru. Siswa selanjutnya menulis kata yang awal katanya dimulai dari huruf akhir kata sebelumnya. Snake word game diharapkan membantu guru dalam mengajar kosa kata bahasa Inggris dan membuat siswa mengingat kosa kata dengan lebih mudah. Permainan ini membutuhkan kerja sama kelompok.

This paper discuss about the use of Podcast in teaching spoken narrative. Podcast can be used by the teacher to improve the student’s motivation in learning narrative especially spoken narrative text. This media can be a solution for the teacher to solve the problem of teaching spoken narrative text. As known that the student in senior high school find some difficulties in learning narrative especially when they need to understand a too long material which is consist of some difficult words. Podcast consist of several material that can be a media for the teacher to teach spoken narrative easily. This media provide a various material including narrative to help the teacher to teach listening. Podcast can easily increase the student motivation because they can find a various material about narrative that can easily understood.

This research aimed to know the students’ ability and their problems in using correlative conjunctions. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The population in this research is the second year, fourth semester of 2018 English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The sample of this research is 31 students selected using cluster sampling. The instruments used in this research was grammar test. The test consisted of three parts which 24 questions in total. The data were scored in general and every part of the question to check the quality of the students’ ability in using correlative conjunctions. The data collected and analyzed were categorized.Then, the researcher calculated the mean score of the students to determine the students' ability in using correlative conjunctions for overall and each part.To knowing the students’ problems, the data were analyzed based on the lowest score of the students in answering all the questions. Based on data analysis, it was found that the students’ ability in using correlative conjunctions was fair because the average score of the students was 60,00. The students have very good ability in answering question part 1. It was also found that the students have some difficulties in answering the question in part 3. Furthermore, it was hard for the students to combine sentences using correlative conjunctions.

AbstrakDalam pengajaran reading, ada beberapa material yang bisa digunakan dalam mengajarkan keterampilan ini kepada young learners. Salah satunya yaitu dengan menggunakan pattern book. Penggunaan pattern book dalam belajar reading sangatlah memudahkan young learners untuk memahami suatu bacaan karena adanya gambar yang memudahkan siswa dalam mengilustrasikan sebuah cerita. Selain itu, pattern book juga memberikan pengulangan frasa di dalam kalimat pada cerita yang di hadirkan buku ini sehingga young learners mudah memahami isi cerita dengan baik. Biasanya kebanyakan guru belum menggunakan bahan ajar reading yang menarik minat baca dan memudahkan young learners untuk memahami isi bacaan. Oleh karena itu, pattern book ini dapat digunakan sebagai salah satu materi ajar yang menarik bagi young learners karena adanya gambar dan pengulangan frasa tersebut. Pattern book ini dapat di buat sendiri oleh guru dan isi cerita pun bisa disesuaikan dengan budaya daerah, norma, serta perkembangan kognitif peserta didik yang diajar oleh masing-masing guru. Cara pembuatan materi ajar ini pun tidaklah begitu sulit. Oleh karena itu, makalah ini membahas tentang cara pembuatan pattern book sebagai materi ajar reading untuk young learners. Sebagai dampak dari pembuatan makalah ini, guru EFL untuk young learners dapat membuat pattern book sebagai bahan ajar reading dengan sendirinya. Sehingga guru-guru EFL dapat menjadi guru yang lebih berkompetensi dan kreatif dalam membuat materi ajar.Kata Kunci: young learner, teaching reading to young learners, materials development, pattern book, cognitive development of young learners.

The ability to write an explanation text is the ability that must be acquired by grade XII students in senior high school that is stated in KTSP (School-based curriculum). The research was a descriptive quantitave research entitled “The Grade XII Students’ Ability in Writing an Explanation text as Found at SMA N 1 Kecamatan Payakumbuh. It was aimed at analyzing the grade XII students’ ability in writing an explanation text viewed from the generic structure and the language features. The population of the research was the grade XII students in SMA N 1 Kecamatan Payakumbuh, and the sample was 20 students of XII IPA 2 class. The students were asked to write an explanation text and their writings were analysed using the scoring rubric of the explanation text that consisting of two aspects, generic structure and language features. Based on the findings, four students were at the excellent level, seven students were at the very good level, five students were at the good level, four students were at the fair level, and there was no students in the poor level. Overall, the grade XII students’ ability in writing an explanation text as found at SMA N 1 Kecamatan Payakumbuh was at the good level.

Abstrak Makalah ini membahas tentang pengajaran membaca bahasa inggris dengan menggunakan Macromedia Flash 8. Penulis melihat bahwa siswa dalam kemampuan membaca masih kurang. Penyebabnya adalah masih kurangnya kosakata dan motivasi siswa dan penggunaan media membaca yang masih belum terlalu direalisasikan sehingga siswa akan cepat merasa bosan. Oleh karena itu, penulis memberikan solusi dengan penggunaan media pembelajaran yang interaktif yang berbasis Macromedia Flash 8. Macromedia Flash 8 adalah media atau software yang diperuntukan dalam pembuatan animasi atau gambar bergerak. Penulis membuat makalah ini bertujuan : (1) menghasilkan media pembelajaran membaca berbasis Macromedia Flash 8 untuk siswa, (2) membantu guru bahasa inggris dalam mengembangkan bahan ajar membaca sehingga bahan ajar tersebut menjadi lebih menarik. Penulis berharap makalah ini dapat bermanfaat sehingga guru bahasa inggris dapat berkreasi sendiri dalam mengembangkan bahan ajar membaca. This research is aimed to know the students’ ability and their perceptions toward the difficulties in comprehending analytical exposition text in different levels of questions which based on Barret’s taxonomy of reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Batusangkar. The population of this research are all second year students in academic year 2019/2020 with the total number 244 students. Based on the population, the sample of this research is 37 students selected using simple random sampling. This research is descriptive quantitative research and used test and questionnaire as the instruments. This research found that the students’ ability in comprehending different level of questions in analytical exposition text was fair because the average score of students was 51,24. The students have good ability in comprehending analytical exposition questions in form of evaluation level. This research also found that students tend to have difficulties in comprehending analytical exposition text in form of inference level.

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat pengaruh penggunaan Opinionnaires Strategy terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam menulis menulis hortatory exposition text di SMAN 2 Padang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen dengan populasinya yaitu kelas XI IPA SMAN 2 Padang tahun pelajaran 2013/2014. Sampel penelitiannya yaitu kelas XI IPA 4 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas XI IPA 5 sebagai kelas kontrol. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah writing essay test. Nilai tes dianalisa dengan hasil t-hitung (2.527) lebih besar dari nilai t-tabel (1.67). Sehingga disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Opinionnaires Strategy memberikan dampak yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa. Key words: Opinionnaires Strategy, Writing skill.
