Abstract

This paper was aimed to explain the use of Learning CommunityStrategyin learning speaking for Junior High School. In this paper was explained how Learning Communityimproved students’ ability for Junior High School. Speaking is one of skills needs to be comprehended by students, but there are many problems in learning process. Therefore, Learning Communitybecame a good method for teacher to use in learning speaking. In Learning Community, learning activities was done in groups . The students was divided into groups in order to know each other to assess their cooperation in Learning Community. It is not only developing the students’ social life, but also building a good relationship between students and teacher especially in speaking English.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPerangkat lunak komputer merupakan salah satu pilihan yang dapat digunakan dalam membuat suatu media pengajaran. Guru dapat menuangkan dan mengaplikasikan ide-ide baru dalam membuat media yang akan meningkatkan motivasi dan ketertarikan siswa dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya dalam berbicara. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk membantu guru dalam pembuatan media dengan menggunakan “Microsoft PowerPoint” sebagai media pembelajaran, yang berguna untuk melatih siswa secara audio dan visual. Microsoft PowerPoint adalah sebuah perangkat lunak berbasis Windows, yang merupakan sebuah perangkat lunak yang bisa digunakan untuk menciptakan media yang menarik berbentuk multimedia, dan dapat diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran berbicara. Dengan menggunakan Microsoft PowerPoint, guru dapat membentuk media yang terdiri dari slide gambar, video, atau bahkan audio menjadi sebuah media yang sangat menarik, yang dapat mendukung pengajaran berbicara. Dalam makalah ini, terdapat proses dan contoh dari pembuatan media pembelajaran menggunakan Microsoft PowerPoint yang dapat diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran berbicara bahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: Perangkat lunak, media pembelajaran, Microsoft PowerPoint, journalOnline, speaking

Abstract

This paper explains about the use of reward and punishment to increase young learners’ motivation in learning English as foreign language in Indonesia. The writer discusses about procedure and advantages of reward and punishment. Reward is an appreciation given by the teacher to the students who can follow the lesson well and finishing the assignment. Meanwhile, punishment is a bad treatment that is given to the students who do not focus in learning process, do not care of their assignment, and have bad habit during the class. Reward and punishment can be given through verbal and non- verbal form (action). Kinds of reward are mimic, gesture, compliment or positive feedback, point or sticker, and present. Kinds of punishment are warning, memorizing vocabulary, decreasing students’ point, and moving students’ seat. Besides to motivate student, reward and punishment also make the students become more discipline and study harder than before.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explain how to use Scratch  program to develop material of a descriptive text to Junior High School students. Material have a crucial rule for learning process. There are two ways to develop material: traditional and related to technologies. The lack of technology used for developing material is caused by the lack of knowledge and updated of the teacher for the use of new technologies, and the extremely hard of designing process. In contrast, there are some advantages for developing material that engage with new technologies. Learners tend to interest with pictures, animation and video that united with technology. So, learners can be attracted with entertainment atmosphere and activities while studying. It means teachers have opportunities to provide materials to learners for use outside the classroom and to learners who are otherwise unable to attend classes. Technologies may make possible to reduce the overall costs of developing language learning materials. Multimedia is a way to develop material through technology that can be engaged by video, sound, graph, animation and text. This paper will be focused to explain how to use Scratch to create multimedia-based material in listening, reading, speaking and writing a descriptive text to Junior High School students. The use of Scratch for developing material can be increased the learner’s interest to follow the learning process. Abstrak Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara menggunakan program Scratch dalam mengembangkan materi pembelajaran descriptive text kepada siswa SMP. Materi punya peranan penting dalam proses pembelajaran. Materi dapat dikembangkan secara tradisional dan berkenaan dengan teknologi baru. Kurangnya pengetahuan guru tentang penggunaan teknologi baru dan tidak ada nya pembaharuan guru tentang teknologi serta proses perancangan yang agak sedikit rumit menyebabkan kurangnya pengembangan materi pembelajaran yang berkenaan dengan teknologi ini. Padahal pengembangan materi dengan menggunakan teknologi punya banyak keuntungan. Salah satu nya dapat meningkatkan ketertarikan siswa melakukan aktivitas di dalam proses pembelajaran. Selain itu, guru juga punya kesempatan untuk mengembangan materi yang bisa digunakan di dalam kelas dan juga di luar kelas. Biaya yang digunakan untuk memperbanyak cetakan materi yang dibuat secara tradisional juga dapat dipangkas. Multimedia merupakan salah satu cara untuk mengembangkan teknologi dalam pembelajaran yang digabungkan dengan video, suara, grafik, animasi dan text. Salah satu software yang dapat menciptakan multimedia  adalah Scratch. Makalah ini membahas tentang cara mengembangkan materi menggunakan Scratch dalam kemampuan mendengar, berbicara, membaca dan menulis sebuah teks deskriptive untuk siswa SMP. Penggunaan Scratch dalam mengembangkan materi diharapkan dapat meningkatkan ketertarikan siswa dalam mengikuti proses pembelajaran.

Abstract

Based on the writer’s experience, many students have difficulties in writing news item text, such as they lack of idea to write; the way of delivering ideas and vocabulary; inappropriate strategy or media when doing teaching and learning process. In order to solve these problems, an appropriate teaching technique is needed to help students improve their ability in writing news item text. This paper is aimed at explaining how to use broadcast news video in teaching writing news item text. Broadcast news video is conducted by showing the students broadcast news video with subtitle which in color. After that, the teacher asks the students to write the phrase that they watch from the video. Then the students discuss with their friends. Next, the students with the teacher help arrange their phrase into a short news item text. Finally, the students present their writing as a news anchor randomly in front of the class. The objective of this paper is to help the students and to improve students’ ability in writing news item text.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze English needs of culinary art students of Vocational High School Number 9 Padang in learning procedure text/recipe. It employed qualitative research method. The subjects of this study were second grade culinary art students of Vocational High School Number 9 Padang. One out of seven classes was chosen to be the sample of this study which consist of 32 students. The data were collected through questionnaires and interview guide. A questionnaire administered to each of the students and an interview was done to an English teacher who teach them. The questionnaire covers three things as the benchmark of students’ needs in learning procedure text/recipe in English class. It was analyzed by looking at the mean value of the students’ answers. The interview recording was also analyzed to get deeper answer from the teacher. The result of the study showed that the most important activity that should be done in learning procedure text/recipe is reading activity. Meanwhile, the skill that must be mastered by the students in order to perform well in their future carrier was speaking skill.

Abstract

AbstrakDalam makalah ini didiskusikan pengajaran writing melalui penggunaan Picture cube kepada siswa sekolah dasar. Pada Picture cube terdapat enam gambar yang berbeda yang di tempelkan pada cube dengan topik pet animal. Dalam penggunaannya, Picture cube itu di putarkan dari satu siswa ke siswa yang lain dalam satu kelompok yang beranggotakan 6 siswa. Cube di putar dalam hitungan 60 detik dan siswa memilih satu gambar untuk kelompok satu dan seterusnya. Apabila kelompok satu mendapatkan gambar tentang cat, maka mereka harus mengerjakan writing activity yang ada pada students sheet round 1 tentang cat, demikian seterusnya. Setelah selesai dilanjutkan dengan round 2, siswa diminta kembali memutar cube seperti activity 1 untuk menentukan topik apa yang akan di buat masing-masing kelompok. Setelah selesai, siswa diminta untuk mengerjakan tugas di round 3. Di round ini siswa tidak memutar cube karena hanya ada satu topik untuk semua siswa dengan tingkat kesulitan yang berbeda dengan round 1 dan 2. Setelah selesai, siswa diminta mengumpulkan student sheet untuk di koreksi.Key Words: teaching writing, picture cube, media, elementary school

Abstract

Teaching process in speaking English is really difficult for some teacher in Senior High School, especially in Asking and Giving Opinion. Unparticipation from students during teaching speaking become major problem to solve. Also, the monotonous teaching speaking which focuses through theory and books make students and teacher having less interction. According to these problems, writer will use the strategy to deal with those problems. So that, students could activate their speaking ability in speakingclass, especially in Asking and Giving opinion. Strategy that writer will use is Quality Questioning Strategy. Quality Questioning Strategy is the questions selected by the teacher to stimulate students thinking outcomes in activate students’ speaking ability. The questions should be an easy questions contains several familiar vocabularies by the students. Thus, there are some rules in using this strategy as follow: Ask Question, Wait Time, No Hands- Up, dan Response. In applying Quality Questioning, teacher needs to follow those rules beacuse the process of those rules will stimulate students thinking outcomes in speaking class, especially in asking and Giving Opinion. Writer hopes that this strategy will activate students speaking ability, especially in Asking and Giving Opinion.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Salah satu media untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) dalam speaking (berbicara) adalah Tic-Tac-Toe Game. Dalam permainan Tic-Tac-Toe Game, siswa dibagi menjadi dua kelompok dan setiap anggota dari kelompok ditutut aktif untuk berbicara sesuai dengan materi yang telah mereka pelajari. Mereka juga harus memiliki strategi yang baik, dan sama-sama berpartisipasi mengemukakan ide sehingga terjadi kerja sama dengan kelompok. Di sinilah siswa diajarkan untuk mempraktekkan speaking karena setiap kelompok bertanggung jawab memberikan pendapat agar dapat memenangkan permainan. Siswa juga diharuskan untuk berfikir kritis. Cara ini dapat memotivasi mereka dalam berbicara dalam kelas.  Kata kunci: Tic-tac-toe game, teaching speaking, teaching junior high school students.
