Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to find out how do English teachers at SMPN 1 Bukittinggi give oral corrective feedback on student’s speaking performance, the ways of teacher giving oral corrective feedback and which types of oral corrective feedback are appropriate and inappropriate. The sample of this research was 4 English teachers at SMPN 1 Bukittinggi. The sample was taken by using total sampling. The techniques of data collection were observation and interview. The instruments used were observation checklist, field note, and audio recording. The data was analyzed based on the theory proposed by Ellis (2009). Based on the findings, it was found that English teachers at SMPN 1 Bukittinggi gave oral corrective feedback in different ways; direct and indirect. Each teacher also had different reasons about the ways they gave oral corrective feedback. Moreover, it was found that each teacher also gave different types of oral corrective feedback. After analyzing the data from the observation and the interview, the types of oral corrective feedback which are appropriate to the students are repetition, explicit correction, and paralinguistic signal. Meanwhile, the types of oral corrective feedback which are inappropriate to the students are recast and clarification request.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat penguasaaan grammar mahasiswa kelas K2-2011 (mahasiswa tingkat III jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang), khususnya concord, jenis-jenis kesalahan yang ditemukan, serta penyebab-penyebab kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa tersebut. Jenis penelitian yang dilakukan adalah penelitian deskriptif. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dari tes grammar yang terdiri dari 50 soal. Subjek penelitiannya adalah mahasiswa kelas K2-2011 yang berjumlah 30 orang. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, tingkat penguasaan grammar mahasiswa kelas K2-2011 jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang dalam concord masih rendah (46,53) dan mereka masih belum menguasai tipe-tipe concord. Kesalahan terbanyak ditemukan dalam Object – Complement Agreement, dimana sekitar 68,67% dari total kesalahan adalah kesalahan dalam tipe ini. Adapun penyebab kesalahan terbanyak adalah False Concept Hypothesized and Overgeneralization. Kata Kunci: Grammar Mastery, Concord

Abstract

Abstrak Siswa SMA masih menemui kesulitan dalam menulis hortatory teks. Hal ini disebabkan karena mereka masih lemah dalam hal menulis dan menyalurkan ide-ide untuk dituangkan dalam teks hortatori. STOP and DARE adalah sebuah strategi menulis yang terdiri dari STOP dan DARE. STOP merupakan strategi yang digunakan untuk menstimulus siswa untuk mengeluarkan ide-ide berupa opini yang digunakan dalam menulis teks hortatori. Setelah ide-ide siswa terkumpul maka guru akan mengaplikasikan DARE sebagai strategi ketika menulis. Siswa dan guru bersama sama mengembangkan ide-ide yang telah terkumpul menjadi paragaraf-paragraf yang runtut dan akhirnya menjadi sebuah teks hortatory. Guru memberikan kebebasan kepada siswa untuk mengemukakan pendapat mereka mengenai sebuah topik atau isu yang dia sediakan. Setelah itu guru menuntun siswa dalam langkah-langkah penulisan. Dengan mengaplikasikan strategi ini dalam mengajar writing khususnya menulis teks hortatory guru akan mudah mengekplorasi ide-ide siswa dan mudah membantu mereka dalam mengembangkannya menjadi sebuah teks hortatori. Abstract

This paper is aimed to discuss about the use of children English song to teach pronunciation to first year of junior high school students. It is known, Junior high school students just learn English; they may have some difficulties in the process of learning. Feeling difficult to pronounce word in English can be one of those problems. In order to solve this problem, teacher should have good solution to help their students. One of the solutions that can use by the teacher is using Children English song as the media to teach pronunciation. Teaching pronunciation through children English song help the students to be familiar with the  English pronunciation, they can also imitate how the singer’s pronounce word in English. So that, the students can makes their pronunciation better. Learning pronunciation by using song also make the students motivated to learn because it is fun and enjoyable.Key Words: Song, Pronunciation, Children English Song

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh rendahnya motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran listening di SMP Negeri 7 Padang. Hal ini diduga disebabkan karena didalam proses pembelajaran tersebut tidak sesuai dengan kebutuhan mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat gambaran kebutuhan siswa terhadap materi listening dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan menganalisis kebutuhan yang dominan. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan yaitu deskriptif kuantitatif, dimana peneliti menggambarkan data apa adanya yang diambil dengan menggunakan kuesioner. Kuesioner ini diisi oleh 66 siswa yang dijadikan sebagai sampel dari total 264 siswa kelas VIII. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah Persentase. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa membutuhkan semua tipe untuk pembelajaran litening. Tipe tersebut adalah input, content (topics), language and tasks. Selain itu, untuk masing-masing tipe terdapat item yang paling dominant yang dibutuhkan siswa dalam proses pembelajarannya. Untuk input, item dengan nilai tertinggi adalah percakapan antara dua orang atau lebih (3.5). Pada content (topics) adalah ekspresi meminta bantuan (3.54) Sedangkan untuk language, mengenal kata kerja (3.48) adalah item yang paling dominant dan untuk tasks, item yang paling dominant yaitu menentukan respon mana yang paling tepat berdasarkan percakapan dengan pertanyaan yang didengar (3.39). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ini menunjukkan bahwa keempat tipe yang terdapat didalam komponen wants and lacks memang sangat dibutuhkan oleh siswa dalam pembelajaran listening.

Abstract

The special characteristics having by young learners require the teacher to create an atmosphere where children engage to the lesson without forgetting that the children’s world full of joy in teaching English as “Local Content” for young learner in Elementary school. Related to this condition, the proper activity to teach young learners is by having games. One examples of game for teaching listening related to instruction around the classroom in fourth grade of elementary school students is Beetle Drive Game. this game will train students’ ability in listening by giving respond toward the instructions given. The most suitable material for this game is “decorating classroom”. The instructions are  “glue the ornaments, hang the maps, stick the posters, turn left, turn right, go ahead, down, up, below, left and right.”.Karakteristik khusus anak - anak dan kondisi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah dasar sebagai muatan lokal,  mengharuskan guru untuk menciptakan  kegiatan pembelajaran yang bisa membuat anak-anak untuk tetap belajar  tanpa melupakan dunia permainan mereka.  Sehubungan dengan hal ini, belajar sambil bermain adalah sebuah kegiatan yang paling cocok untuk digunakan. Salah satu contoh permainan yang bisa digunakan untuk mengajarkan kegiatan mendengar pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk mengajarkan instruksi – instruksi berkaitan dengan lingkungan kelas di kelas empat SD adalah Beetle Drive Game. Kemampuan mendengar siswa akan dilatih dengan memberikan respon terhadap instruksi-instruksi yang ada dalam permainan ini. Materi ajar yang cocok untuk permainan ini yaitu “decorating classroom dengan instruksi : “glue the ornaments, hang the maps, stick the posters, turn left, turn right, go ahead, down, up, below, left and right.”. Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of students of SMAN 2 Sawahlunto in writing. The use of teacher’s instructional strategy is not effective yet in improving students’ writing ability. Therefore it is necessary to apply a good and interesting strategy to increase the ability of students in writing. In this study, researcher used peer feedback strategy in writing hortatory exposition text. The aim of this study was to figure out the impact of peer feedback strategy on students' ability in writing hortatory exposition text. This research was an experimental research. The population was students of grade XI of SMAN 2 Sawahlunto in the academic year 2016/2017 which consists of five classes. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling technique consists of two classes: XI IPA 1 class as experimental group and XI IPA 3 class as control group. The total sample was 38 students. The data were collected through a writing test. The datas of this research were post-test writing from both groups of samples that analyzed using t-test formula. It was found that t-observed was 2.13, while t-table was 2.03 which means t-observed > t-table at the level of significance 0.05. Based on the results of this calculation, it can be concluded that the use of peer feedback strategy can give a better impact on students' writing ability. In other words, the results of this study showed the hypothesis that the students who were taught by using peer feedback strategy had better writing skills than students who were taught by using the conventional strategy by teachers.

Abstract

Abstract This research is a descriptive research that is aimed to describe students’ speaking problems. The research was done at Poltekkes Kemenkes RI Padang. The population of this research were the first year of nursing students at Poltekkes Kemenkes RI Padang. There were 30 students as the sample of this research and chosen by using random sampling technique. The instruments used were the questionnaire (close-ended & open-ended statements) and transcription of video recording. The result of this research showed that disfluency was the significant problem for the students. Then, the significant causes of the speaking problems were inhibition and mother tongue use.Key words: Speaking problem, causes of the speaking problem

Abstract

AbstrakTerdapat beberapa masalah yang sering ditemukan di lapangan dalam pengajaran keterampilan mendengar teks hortatory exposition. Diantara masalah tersebut ialah kurangnya kosa kata dari siswa untuk memahami teks serta media yang kurang menarik. Hal ini berdampak negatif terhadap kemajuan belajar siswa. Untuk pemecahan masalah tersebut dibutuhkan metoda dan media yang dapat memotivasi siswa belajar. Metoda dictogloss dan video dianggap cocok untuk memecahkan permasalahan yang ada. Dalam pelaksanaannya, dictogloss terdiri atas empat tahapan; preparation, dictation, reconstruction, dan analysis and correction. Video sebagai media akan digunakan pada tahap reconstruction. Pada tahap reconstruction siswa dituntut untuk menulis sebuah teks berdasarkan apa yang telah mereka dengar dan tulis di tahap dictation. Video yang diputarkan pada tahap reconstruction merupakan visualisasi dari apa yang telah di dengar oleh siswa pada tahap dictation. Video tersebut dapat membantu siswa memperoleh informasi penting untuk menulis teks di tahap reconstruction yang mana informasi tersebut mugkin mereka lewatkan di tahap dictation. Selain itu video juga dapat memotivasi siswa untuk menyelesaikan tugas mereka di tahap reconstruction. Makalah ini membahas penggunaan dictogloss method dalam pengajaran keterampilan mendengar hortatory exposition text di sekolah menengah atas.Key words: dictogloss method, hortatory exposition text, teaching listening

This paper describes the activity of sharing information in study speaking in the class. This activity is best used as a technique to learn speaking so that, when students learn speaking they feel comfortable, easy to understand and not boring. So that this information sharing activity (gap information) can help students to improve their speaking skills
