Abstract

This research was conducted to determine teachers' perceptions of teacher-centered learning and their reasons for using it when learning English. The researcher used descriptive methods with questionnaires and interview instruments to get answers about perceptions and reasons. The sample used in this research to fill out the questionnaire was 20 teachers and interviewed three English teachers in Agam Regency. The researcher provided a questionnaire with 20 statements that teachers had to fill in by choosing answers between strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. After that, the researcher will also interview three teachers. The findings show that teachers have a positive view of teacher-centered learning. In particular, the positivity of the characteristics category statements with seven statements with an average of 3.13, the positivity of the benefits category statements with four statements with an average of 3.20, and the positivity of statements regarding implementation with six statements with an average of 3.13. Meanwhile, the interview results stated that teachers use teacher-centered learning because it makes it easier for them to control the class, focuses students, and facilitates them to convey material in detail. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that teachers still use teacher-centered learning because of the convenience and benefits they experience. Through this research, the findings can help English teachers to be more creative and change teaching techniques to student-centered learning because it is better for students in the 21st century.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how teachers applied differentiated teaching and learning in English classes of phase F Senior High Schools based on the Merdeka curriculum and figure out the problems they commonly encountered in this type of instruction. The data was gathered by interviewing and observing English teachers who taught phase F grade XI of SMA Negeri 7 and SMA Negeri 10 Padang in the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year representing English teachers of batch I and II Sekolah Penggerak in Padang who were selected by applying purposive sampling. First interview was conducted to investigate how teachers identified student’s learning needs and observation was conducted to investigate how teachers applied differentiated teaching and learning in the classes. Another interview was conducted to find out and describe the problems commonly encountered in this type of instruction. The results show that both teachers A and B identified students' learning needs (readiness) by applying initial formative assessments and taking the data provided by counselling teachers about students' interests and learning profiles. Both teachers adjusted their instruction with relatively similar content differentiation strategies due to the level of student readiness and language barriers. Each teacher applied various processes of differentiations in the types of activity, tasks, media and the level of assistance provided. However, teacher B showed more engagement in personal assistance, scaffolding and tiered tasks. Teacher A offered less consistent product alternatives while teacher B was more consistent and challenged student’s creativity in working by utilizing technology. Accordingly, teacher A faced more obstacles than teacher B.

Abstract

These researchers are interested in conducting research aims to reveal the perceptions of English teachers at SMAN 7 Padang regarding changes in assessment that have occurred in the Merdeka curriculum. This research uses mixed methods to collect, analyze, and integrate quantitative and qualitative data in one study. From the analysis data, it is concluded that English teachers have a positive perception of assessment changes in the Merdeka curriculum. The results of the research show that assessments in the Merdeka curriculum, namely diagnostic assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment are effective assessments to help teachers recognize, monitor, and measure students' abilities and understanding of the material so that teachers can identify and evaluate difficulties that arise faced by each student. This is because the implementation of the three assessments in the Merdeka curriculum is by their respective functions, such as the diagnostic assessment given by the teacher at the beginning of each semester, the formative assessment given by the teacher on each learning topic, and the summative assessment given by the teacher. given by the teacher at the end of each semester. Even though there are many benefits, teachers still experience several obstacles such as computers / PCs that still need to be provided and a stable internet network to access materials and lesson questions, this must be overcome with government assistance.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the students ability in writing fairy tales in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language features, and mechanics. In this research, the researcher used a quantitative research. The researcher chose the design because the researcher wants to analyze the elective English students’ ability in writing fairy tales at SMAN 1 Lareh Sago Halaban. The instrument used in this a research was writing test. The population of this study was 207 elective English students; the sample of the writing test was 36 students. The sample of this research was chosen by using cluster random sampling. Writing test was used to find out the students ability in writing fairy tales, especially in the aspect of content, organization, vocabulary, language features, and mechanics.  Data were analyzed by combining Weigle's assessment theory and Harris's writing scale. The result of this research was show that average scores of the student's writing test were 74,30. It means that the ability of the students were in the "Good" level. More specifically, in the aspects of content, organization, vocabulary and language features, the students are at the "Good to average" level, but in the mechanics aspect the students are at the "Fair to poor" level.

Abstract

Many high school students were not interested in speaking. It is due to the difficulties to do so. However, there was a mobile phone application named English Speaking Practice application as the solution to those issues. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using English Speaking Practice application on the first year students’ speaking ability at SMAS Adabiah Padang.This study was a pre-experimental one sample pre-test post-test design. The population was all of 10th  grade students at SMAS Adabiah Padang and the sample was 34 students of XE1 at SMAS Adabiah Padang chosen with cluster sampling technique. The instrument was a read-aloud speaking test adapted by Brown (2004). The data was analyzed by using SPSS. It was discovered that the sig. values was 0.001 less than 0.05 which means the hypothesis null was rejected. Therefore, the result of this study shown that there was an effect of using English Speaking Practice application on the first year students’ speaking ability at SMAS Adabiah Padang.

Abstract

This research analyzes teacher talk spoken in the classroom. From this research, we see what categories are often used in class. The design of this research is descriptive. The subjects of this research are two teachers who teach English classes at SMPN 15 Padang. There are two teachers, a man and a woman who teach the English class. The teachers have more than five years of teaching experience and are certified as school teachers. In this study, researchers focused on teacher talk and the function of teacher talk in classroom interactions in English classes. Researchers obtained data by recording videos of interactions in the classroom. The categories of types of teacher talk contain six categories of teacher talk and there are five categories of teacher talk functions. The research results showed that the six categories of teacher talk appeared 447 times, while the question category appeared the most 165 times. The least used category Criticizing students. The teacher conversation function appeared 142 times with the Instruction category appearing 50 times.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze students' understanding of language features and the most difficult part of language features in narrative texts at SMPN 6 Gunung Talang. Descriptive research was the method used in this study with Grade eight students as the population. To determine the sample, the researcher used proportional random sampling where 30 eighth grade students were selected as samples in this study. There were two instruments used in this study which were tests and interviews. The results of the study showed that students' ability to understand language features in narrative texts showed an average score of 35.4. This score indicates that students generally fail to understand language features in narrative texts. Then, the most difficult part of the language features of narrative text for eighth grade students is the simple past tense with a percentage of 77% incorrect answers from 300 question occurrences.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze teachers' viewpoints regarding the utilization of virtual reality technology as an instructional tool in the context of learning. This study utilized qualitative research methodologies. Four English teachers from SMPN 3 Solok Selatan participated in this study. The data were collected through an interview after the participants tried out the MILEALAB-based materials. This study used Fred Davis's Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory (1996) as the theoretical framework. The data analysis in this study involved the examination of four indicators, specifically perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude to use, and intention to use. The researcher chose to employ Miles and Huberman's flow model in order to analyze the data obtained from the interview. The result showed that many viewpoints existed about virtual reality equipment. Thus, nearly all teachers approve of the utilization of virtual reality in educational settings. According to teachers, the use of virtual reality has been found to enhance English language proficiency as well as increase interest and enthusiasm among individuals who participate in English language learning activities. Also, certain teachers share the viewpoint that improvements should be made to virtual reality course material.

Abstract

This research intended to know students’ problems at SMKN 4 Padang their reading comprehension. This program is implemented especially for grade twelve, that carried out for two days in first semester. This research includes a review of theories linked to the research concerns as well as the conceptual framework of the study. also, the researcher had done do practical field on this school before. so the researcher believed it was important to to analyze how the students’ perception on reading and teacher's methods. This study employed a quantitative methodology. The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire consisted 30 statements given to 53 students and interview consisted 13 questions given to 4 students. As a result of the study, most of the students not only gave the positive responses. but, also honest review about this problems in developing their reading skill. Providing the best advice for the new generation and how teachers teach students for the future. Most of They also hope in next future the teacher use the media for teaching like projector or something media, because of this learning activities which are more attractive and interesting. also, the student still think English lesson especially reading is difficult.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the teacher's difficulties and strategies in teaching English at Islamic boarding school of Nurmanisy Hikmatusallam which are influenced by the environment and regulations that applied to Islamic boarding school. The design of this research is case study, while the research method used is qualitative. The participants in this research are three English teachers in Islamic Boarding School of NurmanisyHikmatusallam. The data were obtained from two technique, class observation and interview. The results showed that there three challenges faced by the teacher. First, the lack of students’ speaking skill. Based on interview it was found that the reason for student lack of ability in speaking English is that they have never learned English before. Second, the lack of training given to English teachers. It is difficult for teachers to provide students with integrates Islamic value to the English material. Last, the lack of teaching media and school facilities. When teaching English in the class, English teachers use teaching strategies. There are three strategies used by the teachers: inquiry learning, role play, direct instruction.
