Abstract

Due to the increasing demand of proficiency in English, every school and institution has also demanded their students to learn English. To identify whether the students have understood the subject matter, tests are being conducted to measure the students’ understanding. Several studies agreed and confirmed that tests can make the students feel anxious. As an affective factor, test anxiety has been investigated a lot. The current research focuses on test anxiety as the major affective factors. Thus, this research aims to find out the test anxiety level of students at Senior High School level, along with its relationship with the students’ gender and major. Moreover, the causes of the test anxiety were investigated according to the students’ own perceptions through semi-structured interview. To gather the data for this mixed-method research, the Test Anxiety Scale and semi-structured interview were conducted. The overall result showed that the students had moderate level of test anxiety. Female and science class students tend to be more anxious than the male and social students are. The factors of the test anxiety mentioned by the participants are English understanding, test preparation, time limit, pressure to prove oneself, and test procedure.

Abstract

Flipped classroom is an approach to teach listening in which students participate in online learning in place of traditional homework and then attend school for face-to-face, teacher-guided practice or projects. It is a part of larger education system called blended learning. In this approach, students could learn new content on their own by watching video lectures or other online sources and assigned problems (traditional “homework”) are completed in class with teachers offering personalized guidance instead of lectures. The paper here examined an ESL listening class. Listening skill is much more than hearing. Unfortunately, in students’ opinion, listening is an uninteresting activity. Many students feel very bored in listening class. That is why teachers should know about how to make the students more interested in listening. The aim of this paper is discuss best practices and challenges of implementing the flipped classroom in teaching and learning listening. By using this approach, it is expected that students will develop their listening skills as well as have a lot of fun. The main findings of the study indicate that the students enjoyed learning listening in a flipped classroom environment. They can practice not only listening but also all language skills in listening class.

Abstract

This research describes factors that influence teachers’ beliefs on the use of authentic materials to teach listening. This issue points out on what factors that shape their beliefs on authentic materials which are considered as good media to teach listening and support the learning and teaching practice. Two English teachers who constantly use authentic materials for listening skill are as the subject of this research. Observation, questionnaire and interview are administered to gain the data. The data are analyzed by using interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The result shows that factors influencing teachers’ beliefs are: a) challenging points of authentic materials; b) easy access to authentic materials; c) the availability of the materials; d) students’ interest; e) worskop/training and personal experience. The result implies that some factors on using authentic materials have shaped teachers’ beliefs.

Abstract

English is interesting. In learning English, we start from learning the basic things. A part of Speech is the basic aspect in English. Pronouns is parts of speech. By knowing pronouns, a person can make simple sentence. It can be used to master vocabulary and to motivate someone to be fluently in English. The title of this research is an analyzing pronoun in “A Fresh N Fruity Spring” story book by Lauren Cecil. The aim of this research is to find out the pronouns in a story book, in order to be master in vocabulary and making simple sentence from it. The method which will be applied in this research is a descriptive qualitative. Key words: parts of speech, pronoun, story book

Abstract

Digital storytelling is the telling of stories using computer-based tools to tell stories. It combines the art of telling stories with a variety of multimedia, including graphics, audio, video, and Web publishing. In the field of education, teachers and their students, from early childhood classrooms through graduate school, are using digital storytelling in many different content areas and across a wide range of grade levels. The purpose of this article is to explain the way how the digital storytelling can be created. There are five steps in creating digital storytelling in this workshop. 1. Determine Topic and Write a Script, 2. Collect Digital Resources, 3. Select Content and Develop a Storyboard, 4. Import, Record, Finalize, and 5. Share, Teach, Improve. Abstract

The aim of the analysis of illocutionary forces in snow white and the huntsman movie is to pertain the importance of knowing the real meaning and function behind utterances in the movie, it means this analysis help students get the ways how to comprehend other movies by this movie as an example. Illocutionary forces in SnowWhite and the Huntsman movie directed by Rupert Sanders with involving a study oflinguistic. This research is to answer what the illocutionary forces based on Searle's category are found in Snow White and the Huntsman movie directed by Rupert Sanders and what the dominant type is. Descriptive method is used in this research. There are twenty four data as substance to be analysed. The data are analysed using the theory of illocutionary forces based on Searle. The result indicates that there are five types of illocutionary forces based on Searle's category. There are assertives, directives, commisives, expressives, and declaratives. First is assertives, which occur four times. Second is directives, which occur eleven times. Third is commissives, which occur two times. Fourth is expressives, which occur six times. Fifth is declaratives, which occur one time. From these illocutionary forces, it shows that each type of illocutionary forces has different frequency of occurrence, which directives are the dominant type due to the condition of the palace in the movie. In the palace, there are various positions such as Queen, Princess, and the Huntsman. It is great possibility of them to get hearer to do something as what they want. All data has a meaning as substantiation for people that every utterances in a movie have its own function. Keyword: Hearer, Illocutionary Forces, Speaker, Utterance

Abstract

Writing is one of productive skill in learning English. Students must produce their own written texts. In teaching writing, the teacher needs a technique or media to support their teaching. One of the techniques that the teacher can be used is scaffolding. The purpose of this study are to know the students’ response and students’ problem in teaching writing of descriptive text by using scaffolding, the advantages and disadvantages of scaffolding technique. The approach of this research is qualitative and the design is descriptive qualitative. To get the data, the writer did observation, gave questionnaire to the students to know how the students’ response, interview to the English teacher, and took some pictures for documentation

Abstract

English is studied as a second language and it has crucial role in every aspect, especially in educational aspect. In the millennial era, students not only use English in their real communication, but they also use it to communicate on several application or websites. English need to study by the students at the university level because it will skilled them for their future. This study attempts to know what kinds of motivation had by the students in studying English at STIKES Cendekia Utama Kudus. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. It is conducted to find the students’ motivation in studying English; either student used extrinsic motivation or intrinsic motivation. The population in this research was all of the students who take an English Subject on even semester in the academic years 2018/2019, while the sample in this research was 139 students. The researcher used Likert Scale rating score as the instrument and also questionnaire which were adapted from Gardner’s Attitude or Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). The finding explained that extrinsic motivational level is higher than intrinsic motivational level. The extrinsic motivational level stands in point 4.14, while intrinsic motivational level stands in point 4.04. Although, total score of extrinsic motivational lever is higher than intrinsic motivational level, both of them are in a high level. This result showed that students have good motivation, both in Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation. It will be useful for the lecturer to make learning English better on their future. Abstract

The aim of the teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), particularly at the Junior High School, is to provide the students with the ability to use the target language for communication. It means that students should be able to perform oral communication in conveying and receiving messages in the language in real and natural world. Consequently, EFL teachers should create a classroom atmosphere where students engage in real-life communication, authentic activities, and meaningful tasks that promote oral language production.This paper offers an interesting and interactive activity as so called Running Dictation to activate students in speaking class. Theoritically, the activity is based on the one of the four strands in speaking class that is Language Focused Learning.The activity may lead students to greater independence and interdependence as it requires each student to perform cooperatively and to interact actively with other students in order to finish a task. Above all,this activity will emerge joyful , interesting and challengingatmosphere in Junior High School class as students feel like playing a game while they are learning and as a result can result in promoting better performance in speaking class. Abstract

The use of authentic materials is important in teaching EFL students due to its real life English language usage. For this reason, this article discusses the way how to use TV commercials as an authentic materials in teaching one of the skills in English, that is listening. This article serves several materials, activities, and steps of how we implement the usage of TV commercials as authentic materials to improve listening ablity of the students. These materials, activities and steps is aimed to encourage and to give the real life usage of English, so the students can implement it in their daily communication abroad. These strategies was collected through several articles reading and experts in EFL teaching. It is known that both EFL teachers and students have much to gain from TV commercials. TV commercials have visual, verbal and written images, interesting vocabulary and cultural features, and help students to improve their listening skills and to speak English in a more natural way.
