Abstract

Literacy is a skill that develops along with the nurtured development of a person. For most school children in Indonesia this is a skill that is rarely encouraged, and yet this is the basic skill, the based foundation for academic growth. This paper looks at literacy development through child language development, its interaction with the carers and his/her environment. This is an attempt to look at the problem of the lack of literacy skills faced by Indonesians children and try to argue its stunted development through child language development, linked to their language development. Subsequently, it also attempt to place this issue through an argument that link this early development with the schooling process at the primary level, and how it might impact children’s literacy development.

Abstract

Motivation can be considered as one of influential factors in foreign language (FL) learning as it helps to sustain learner’s interest during long and tedious learning process of FL. According to Deci and Ryan (2000), motivation can be categorized into two types; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The present study aims to investigate intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors of a group of university students in an urban area to learn English. The present study applied a mixed method approach by administering a set of questionnaires and interviews. In addition to a relatively high level of motivation among the participants, the findings of present study show an interest in English language skills and positive attitudes to native speakers of English, English speaking countries, and English learning as intrinsic motivational factors to learn English. On the other hand, the chances of getting better jobs and personal development as extrinsic factors which motivate students to learn English. The present study recommends English teachers as well as educational institutions to provide teaching and learning materials which suited to improve students’ motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to find out diction errors in online sales promotions on Instagram. Twenty sentences have been taken from six accounts established in Solo, Central Java, as the samples.  Analysis is focused on the inappropriate use of English words and terms. The results of this study are as follows. First, some forms of language errors found in Instagram accounts includes diction and terms errors. Second, the factors of language errors in sales promotions are (1) English is more popular, (2) English is more concise, (3) English looks more prestigious, and (4) English seems more persuasive.

Abstract

Pada abad 21 ini dibutuhkan sebuah pendidikan karakter guna membentuk siswa-siswa yang tidak hanya cerdas pengetahuan namun juga cerdas budi pekerti. Terdapat 18 karakter budaya bangsa yang telah dicetuskan pemerintah, salah satu karakter tersebut rasa ingin tahu. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi sikap  rasa ingin tahu siswa pada pembelajaran fisika di MAN 1 Batanghari. Subjek penelitian adalah 35 siswa kelas X IPA di MAN 1 Batnghari. hasil penelitian ini yaitu terdapat 9 siswa yang memperoleh nilai baik dengan persentase 25.7% dan 26 siswa yang memperoleh nilai sangat baik dengan persentase 74.3% . Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa sikap rasa ingin tahu yang ada pada siswa kelas X IPA di MAN 1 Batanghari tergolong kuat, dibuktikan juga dengan adanya pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang diajukan siswa pada saat observasi.

Abstract

Artikel ini intens menyoroti hal-hal yang melatarbelakangi kebijakan kurikulum pendidikan, khususnya pendidikan karakter dalam bingkai Program ‘penguatan pendidikan karakter’ (PPK). Hal tersebut tentunya tidak lepas dari inovasi kebijakan kurikulum yang dikawinkan dengan gagasan-gagasan pemerintah, yang dibalut dalam sebuah gerakan dengan label “revolusi mental” yang terintegrasi dalam sebuah kurikulum nasional yang sedang berjalan. Persoalan yang akhirnya menjadi pokok perhatian dalam artikel ini, yakni bagaimana aktor-aktor tertentu memanfaatkan konstruksi pengetahuan tentang dinamika perubahan kurikulum dan urgensitas pendidikan karakter dalam pendidikan nasional. Proses di mana pengetahuan tentang kurikulum nasional dan skema penyelesaian huru-hara implementasi kebijakan kurikulum dikonstruksi, menggambarkan bagaimana aktor-aktor menjalankan kekuasaan. Teori governmentality Michel Foucault secara efektif menunjukkan wacana yang hanya menjadi medium mengantarkan kekuasaan. Kekuasaan justru akan semakin efektif jika berhasil menggerakkan serta mengarahkan individu-individu untuk bertingkah laku secara sukarela. Keadaan sebisa mungkin dibuat normal-normal saja, dengan begitu, akan tercipta masyarakat yang berdisiplin, taat regulasi, dan membatasi diri pada aturan-aturan yang telah diciptakan. Kekuasaan bukan lagi sekadar mengontrol, ia bahkan didukung oleh individu-individu yang merasa menjadi bagian darinya, sehingga masing-masing dari mereka mengambil sikap “etis” terhadap persoalan-persoalan atau wacana-wacana yang dihadapi.
