Abstract

This study analyzed the transitivity process in the novel The Borrowers. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative.This study focused on transitivity which is a part of the Ideational meaning in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL).According to Halliday, the three main components in transitivity are the process itself, the participants involved in the process and circumstance. There are six process of transitivity, namely Material, Mental, Relational, Behavioral, Verbal and Existential. The data in this study were divided into two, which were utterances and narrations. This study only focused on chapter one. The source of data in this research wasa novel The Borrowers written by Mary Norton. This study aims to find out the dominant process found in the novel. The instrument used was the researcher herself and assisted by the analysis tableto show the dominant process found in the novel.In analyzing the data, the researcher used several steps, which were reading the text, identify the data and put it in data card, calculated the data, and making conclusion.There are 269 clauses of transitivity found in the chapter one of the novel The Borrowers. The process that appears mostly in chapter is Relational: Attributive with 67 clauses/ 24.90%. Research on transitivity has been done a lot before. Nonetheles, there is a difference between between the new research and the old one. Other researchers who also examined transitivity in fiction text were (Kurnia, 2018; Koutchade, 2017; Rashid, 2016). Most researchers in fiction text only examined short story, and the data results that obtained are all the clause of the full story. However, this research only focuses on the beginning chapter in fiction text.

Abstract

Tujuan analisa ini adalah untuk mengungkapkan isu pembunuh berdrah dingin pada novel Child 44 karya Tom Rob Smith. Permasalah pada analisa ini adalah untuk mengetahui sejauh mana novel tersebut mengungkapkan kejahatan-kejahatan pemerintah Rusia dalam menjalankan pemeritahan. Analisa ini menggunakan implied author untuk mengeluarkan bukti-bukti yang besangkutan dengan isu pembunuh berdarah dingin. Analisa ini menggunakan konsep dekolonisasi oleh Frantz Fanon. Analisa ini dilakukan berdasarkan interpretasi teks dan interpretasi berbasis konteks. Hasil dari analisa ini adalah kejahatan-kejahatan yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah Rusia untuk mempertahankan kekuasaannya. kejahatan-kejahatan ini diperbuat dalam dua cara: pengaturan situasi dan pemberlakukan kekuasaan.

Abstract

This research studies about politeness strategies and translation technique in Inglorious Basterds movie and its Indonesian translation. The purposes of the research are to know the kinds of politeness strategies which is used by the main characters in directive utterance and how does the translator translate the politeness strategies of directive act into subtitle. The data of this research are Inglorious Basterds movie and its Indonesian translation. This research is done by descriptive qualitative method, and focus on a single case. The research findings show that there were 4 types of politeness strategies and 12 translation techniques in 168 data. Based on the frequencies, the strategies applied in the data are Bald on Record 86 times (43%), Positive Politeness 57 times (29%), Negative Politeness 33 times (17%), and Off Record 22 times (11%).

Abstract

This research analyzed the euphemism used by pro and cons speakers in Trans 7 Show Mata Najwa by using Warren, forms of euphemism and Leech, types of meaning theories. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research method. The data in this research was the video’s script of Mata Najwa that downloaded from 7 episodes in YouTube. After analyzing the seven episodes, forms of euphemism by pro speakers found are 1 slang, 1 loan word, 1 particularization, and 3 implication while by cons speakers are 1 derivation, 2 slang, 2 abbreviations, 4 loan words, 5 particularizations, 1 implication, and 2 metaphor. On the other hand, types of meaning by pro speakers found are 1 conceptual meaning, 3 connotative meaning and 1 affective meaning. While by cons speakers are 7 conceptual meaning, 7 connotative meaning, 1 social meaning, 2 affective meaning, and 1 reflected meaning.  The result of the study reveals that the dominant form by pro speaker is implication and the most dominant form by cons speaker is particularization. While connotative meaning was the dominant type by pro and conceptual and connotative meaning was the most dominant type by cons speakers of usage types of meaning in Mata Najwa. The differences of using euphemism by pro and cons speakers is that cons speakers use more euphemism in their conversations in order to avoid using the rude or offensive word, also to avoid the loss of face of the speaker, the hearer or the people which is being talked.

Abstract

This study analyzed the structure shift that occurred in English-Indonesian translation. This study employed the descriptive qualitative approach. Data that were found in this research were sentences in the Indonesian translation version of Pragmatics written by George Yule. The textbooks were the source of the data, one as a source language which is English version, another as a target language in Indonesian version. The textbook entitled Pragmatics by George Yule was as a source language, and Its translation which entitle Pragmatik as a target language. The data were collected using document analysis, and data sheet that used to categorize the types of structure shift. There are 70 structure shifts found from the data that were collected and analyzed. There are three types of structure shift. The structure shift of addition appeared 13 times, Omission appeared 21 times, and the structure shift of Head Modifier to Modifier Head in phrase of the sentences in source language and target language appeared 36 times.

Abstract

This study aims at describing verbal and visual elements in Sumbar Holiday tourism brochure of Mandeh Island, West Sumatera. The verbal and visual elements are analyzed by using Cheong′s (2004) generic structure. The researcher used descriptive research method. The data in this research were verbal and non-verbal texts found in Sumbar Holiday tourism brochure of Mandeh Island. The brochure was downloaded from travel and tour agent Instagram account that is chosen randomly. The result of the study reveals that the brochure have all generic structure which is lead, display, emblem (verbal), announcement, enhancer, emblem (visual), tag, and call-and-visit information. The finding of Sumbar Holiday brochure fully supports Cheong′s (2004) theory. The verbal and visual elements support each other and cohere to convey a message to the reader. The message conveyed to readers become more persuasive, and it arouses their interest to use the tour and travel company service.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of ideology enforcement in poems Chadur and Char-Diwari (CCD) by Fahmida Riaz, Gracefully She Approached (GSA) by Simin Behbahani, and Daughter of Afghanistan (DOA) by Nadia Anjuman. The issue of ideology enforcement refers to the patriarchy system strategies in applying their rules to the women. The problem of this analysis is to find how far these poems expose the issue of the patriarchy system's ideology enforcement. This analysis aims to expose men's rule influence toward the Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan women. This analysis uses the contribution of poetic elements; imagery, symbol, and diction in revealing the issue of the patriarchy system's ideology enforcement. The analysis is based on the concept of a feminist by Kate Millet, Naomi Wolf, and Betty Friedan that is supported by the text and context-based interpretation. The result of this analysis is the strategy of the patriarchy system enforcing their ideology toward the women. The men play their authority in the women's role and activity in public. The strategies are applied in two ways; manipulation and indoctrination.

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this study was to identify the types of figurative language used in the lyric of Saif Adam songs and the dominant types of figurative language found in the lyric of Saif Adam songs. The method used in this study is a descrptive qualitative method. This research used the theory of Perrine. The researcher found 8 types of figurative language used in Saif Adam’s song lyrics such as hyperbole, irony, metaphor, personification, simile, litotes, metonymy, and paradox. The data were collected by reading the lyrics of Saif Adam’s song. There were 14 of hyperbole, 3 of Irony, 20 of metaphor, 11 of personification, 10 of simile, 5 of litotes, 10 of metonymy, and 7 of paradox. This study found that the most dominant type of figurative language was metaphor with the percentage of 25%. It was followed by hyperbole with the percentage of 17.5%. Then, it was followed by personification with percentage 13.75%,. simile and metonymy with the percentage of 11.3%. And also it was followed by paradox and litotes with the proportion of 7.9% and 5.6%. Irony was the least dominant one with the percentage of only 3.4%.Key words :  Semantics, Figurative language, Song, Religious Song, Lyric.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of women objectification in novel The Testaments (2019) by Margaret Atwood. The issue of women objectification refers to the various ways men objectify and subordinate women’s characters in every aspect of women’s life. This analysis focuses on men’s actions in restricting women’s life choices and using religion as a shield to regulate women’s body. This analysis is text-based interpretation based on the concept of women objectification theory proposed by Martha Nusbaum. This analysis uses fictional devices such as character, plot (conflict) and setting that contribute in revealing the issue. The result of the study reveals the way men objectify women is done two ways; they are choice restriction and religion distortion.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the differences and the similarities between two video tourism advertisements of Indonesia and South Korea through three levels of metafunction. The three levels of metafunctions are: 1) the level of ideational metafunction, 2) the level of interpersonal metafunction, and 3) the level of textual metafunction. The Systemic Functional Linguistics theory by Halliday, Visual Grammar theory by Kress and Van Leeuwen and generic structure analysis theory by Cheong were applied to analyze this research. The method used in this research was a descriptive research method. The data in this research were texts and images used in two video tourism advertisements. The results of the study show that they share one similarity and fourteen differences in the level of ideational metafunction. Then, there are six similarities and eight differences in the interpersonal level. Meanwhile, there are four differences and no similarities found for textual metafunction. The conclusion obtained from the findings is that they are more different rather than similar and the differences in how they produces the video tourism ads are affected by the differences in cultural background of the videos which are represented through speech and visual and lead to the different ways of producing structure of clauses and selection of words in the three levels of metafunction.
