Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of a play written by Kristoffer Diaz entitled The Elaborate Entrance Of Chad Deity (2011). It investigates the issue of fluid identity that is experienced by citizen in multicultural society. This analysis is related to the multiculturalism approach and the concept of fluid identity by Andrew Robinson and Leary and Tangney. The analysis focuses on the issue of fluid identity. The aim of this analysis is to what extent the character, conflict (plot), setting and stage direction contribute to reveal the issue of fluid identity. The result of the study shows that identity is fluid and dynamics. It is not biologically. Identity can be changed by time and contexts. Fluid identity is influenced by external factors.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of the Play Fairview (2018) by Jackie Siblies Drury. The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of instilling negative stereotypes. It is also intended to expose how the contribution of fictional elements (character, setting, plot/conflict, and stage direction) in revealing the issue of instilling negative stereotypes. This analysis is done through text-based and context-based interpretation which are related to the concept of The Fact of Blackness by Frantz Fanon in his book Black Skin, White mask. The result of this analysis shows white has instilled the negative stereotypes toward black by circulating and perpetuating through the media that black is forever inferior.

Abstract

This research aims at examining the types of language style based on sentence structure in the 2020 US presidential candidate debate. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of language style based on sentence structure used by Trump and Biden in the 2020 US presidential candidate debate. The data were analyzed by using Keraf’s theory (2006). The data were the sentences that contained languages style based on sentence structure uttered by Trump and Biden, and the sources of data in this research were the two videos of US presidential candidate debate 2020 and its script. This research used qualitative-descriptive techniques and quantitative calculation because the data will be presented in statistic. The results of the study show that from 12 types of language style based on sentence structure, there were 11 types of language style based on sentence structure used by Trump, meanwhile there were 10 types of language style based on sentence structure used by biden. From a total of 241 data, as many as 105 sentences were uttered by Donald Trump and 146 sentences were uttered by Joe Biden in the two videos of 2020 US presidential candidate debate containing language style based on sentence structure.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of the Drama The Peach Seasons (2007) by Debra Oswald. The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of anxiety disorder that refers to the protagonist who is a mother toward her daughter. This analysis is also intended to expose how the contribution of fictional elements (character and action/plot) in revealing the form of anxiety disorder. This analysis is related to the concept of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud. The result of this analysis shows the protagonist has anxiety disorder toward her daughter through the negative behaviour and irrational thinking.

Abstract

The illocutionary acts are the acts of doing something. When someone said something, it certainly has a meaning of what he/she said. Illocutionary acts can be seen in the movie because there are so many utterances that contain illocutionary acts which uttered by the movie characters. The Lion King (1994)one of the movies that have many illocutionary acts inside. This study aims to find out what are types of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the script of “The Lion King” movie (1994). This study also aims to find out what are types that dominantly used by the main character in the script of the Lion King movie (1994). This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data was taken from Simba utterances in the movie script. The data were analyzed based on Searle’s theory (1997) and classifying them into five types of illocutionary acts. They are representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. The result of this study shown that The Lion King movie script contained all types of illocutionary acts that were uttered by the main character “Simba.” Representative 85 data or 65,3%, directive 39 data or 30%, commissive 3 data or 2,3%, expressive 2 data or 1,6%, and the last is declarative 1 data or 0,8%. Based on these result, representative was the dominant used by main character in the movie about 65,3% and declarative was the least appeared about 0,8%. It means The Lion King movie’s writer makes the main character of “Simba” use a lot of representative in order to inform or state something.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyse the translation quality of the English Version of West Sumatra tourism brochure 2020. It was carried by using descriptive method. Twenty-seven tourism brochures werestudied based on the translation quality assessment model which is developed by Nababan et al. (2012). After completing the analysis, it was found that that 21 texts (77.77%) are categorized in the accurate level, 6 texts (22.23%) are translated less accurately, and none of the texts is translated inaccurately. In terms of their acceptability, 17 texts (62.97%) are less acceptable, 9 texts (33.33%) are categorized in less acceptable level, and the other text (3.70%) is assessed as the unacceptable translation.In addition, 20 texts (74.08%) are readable, 5 texts (18.52%) are less readable. Meanwhile, the other 2 texts (7.4%) are not readable.The results of the translation quality show that the translation of West Sumatra tourism brochuresis mostly accurate, acceptable and readable.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the language attitude of the first generations of the Javanese transmigrant in Jorong Mekar Jaya Sijunjung based on language loyalty, language pride and the awareness of the norm. This research was using both of quantitative and qualitative data (mixed method). the quantitative data were processed by using SPSS software program, then analyzed the qualitative data descriptively using the  language attitude theory of Garvin and Mathiot (1978)  The data were collected by questionnaires and interview which shared to 50 respondents. The results of this research shows that 98.52% first generation of the Javanese transmigrant who live in Jorong Mekar Jaya have highly positive language attitude towards unggah-ungguh basa.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of Conversational Implicature and types of Maxims that found in movie. This analysis will be based on theory of Coorperative Principle proposed by Paul Grice. The objects of this research is a movie and the script of movie. This study is descriptive qualitative with the analyze the sentence.The result shows that types Conversational Implicature divide into two, Generalized and Particularized Implicature, which dominated is Generalized Conversational Implicature. This type more dominated because it is more effectively used in daily conversation. In daily conversation speaker and listener do not need background knowledge to understand the meaning of utterance. This research also analyze about Maxims, the researcher found types of Maxims, there are, Quantity, Quality, Relation and Manner. Maxim of Quality is more dominated because in daily conversation speaker and hearer needs the truthful information and have evidence.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find the slang words and the word formation process found in Bad Boys for Life Movie. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The data were analyzed by using theory of Yule (2010) and Spolsky (2012). The data were taken from the scripts of Bad Boys Life Movie which was released in 2020. The result of the research showed that there were 82 slang words were found. Out of 10 types word formation processes, there are 7 types of found in this research. They are (40) coinage, (6) borrowing, (14) compounding, (8) blending, (11) clipping, (1) of derivation, and (2) multiple processes. The most dominant word formation process is coinage with occurrence 40 times (48.78%). The second most frequent word formation process used in creating the slang words in this movie is compounding with the occurrence 14 times (13.41%). The least dominant word formation process is derivation with occurrence 1 time (1.22%).

Abstract

In bilingual societies, people are able to speak many languages. Commonly, they mix various languages while doing a conversation. This study aims to find out the type of code-mixing used by Fathia Izzati’s YouTube channel. This research used a theory by Hoffman (1991) about three types of code-mixing. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from three videos of YouTube Fathia Izzati in 2018 and 2019. The result shows that from 89 data collected, there are two types out of code-mixing that have been found from three types of Hoffman theory. They are Intra-sentential code-mixing (98.88%), involving a change of pronunciation (1.12%), while intra-lexical code-mixing is not found from the data. By the finding, it can be concluded that the types of code-mixing dominantly used by Fathia in her videos is intra-sentential of code-mixing. The speaker’s educational background and parenting patterns greatly influence her speaking style combining the two languages. The reason Fathia speaks like that because she is comfortable and used to mix two languages when speaking. Sometimes there are Indonesian vocabs that are not match for use when speaking, so the speaker is more comfortable mixing with English vocabs and vice versa. Furthermore, the impact of the personal background of a person influenced the speaker to do code-mixing.
