Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of eliminating segregation which is done by an 11-year-old girl and to know the contribution of the setting, plot and character in revealing the eliminating segregation. This analysis is related to the concept of life instincts by Sigmund Freud, the concept of self-determination by Ryan and Deci, that is supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows the protagonist to eliminate the segregation by changing mindset and having good behaviour.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out forms of language hegemony of English and factors motivating language hegemony of English into Bahasa Indonesia found in posts on Facebook communities of Indonesian android smartphone users. The method used in this research was descriptive. The data of the research were texts of 150 posts obtained from 10 Facebook groups. In other words, the research data consisted of 150 texts. Out of 150 texts, it was found 244 frequencies of forms of language hegemony of English and 220 frequencies of factors motivating language hegemony of English into Bahasa Indonesia. The results showed that forms of language hegemony of English were: borrowing as the most dominant form, language interference, code mixing, and code switching. It indicated that the hegemony in this case occured in integrating of the two languages rather than totally dominating in which it was only the language of dominant group was used. Meanwhile, factors motivating language hegemony of English found were social interaction as the most influencing one and socio-cultural change.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue about wrestling with schizophrenia which is done by protagonist and to know the contribution of setting, character and plot in revealing the issue about wrestling with schizophrenia. This analysis is related to the medical theory of schizophrenia and the concept of id, ego, and superego by Sigmund Freud. This analysis is supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows the protagonist succeeds in wrestling with schizophrenia through self-controlling and socializing with others.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was (1) to identify the lexical differences of Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect in Dharmasraya compared to the standard Minangkabaunese (2) to identify the lexical similarities between Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect and the standard Minangkabaunese. In this paper the researcher used descriptive method; it is possible to compare two dialects so that we can found the differences, the uniqueness of lexical changes, and the vocabulary similarities. From the research that has been done, the researcher used 127 sample data to see the lexical differences and similarities that exist in Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect compared to the standard Minangkabaunese. From the sample the researcher found that Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect often use phoneme /o/ at the first syllable of the word compared to the standard Minangkabaunese that often use phoneme /a/, phoneme /r/ in the standard Minangkabaunese changes to /w/ and /y/ in the middle of the word, and phoneme /a/ changes to /au/ and /iu/ at the end of the word; and from the sample data the researcher also found the similarities in some vocabulary used by Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect and the standard Minangkabaunese. From this paper the researcher hope that this paper can be useful in learning as an additional knowledge in learning Dialectology.

Abstract

In today’s advanced technology, the needs of word formation increase because more and more terms to support such technology advancement were invented. This also happens to aviation terms that also introduces several new terms that might be still strange to the public. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study on word formation of aviation terms in order to facilitate the public understanding of aviation terms. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of word formation of aviation terms in English for Aviation Book published by Oxford. This sudy used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were the words contained in the listening transcript of the book. The data were analyzed based on the theories of word formation proposed by Bryson (1990), O’Grady et al. (1997), Pena (2010), Plag (2002) and Yule (2010). Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are 12 out of 17 types of word formation proposed by aforementioned experts. They are (1) Derivation, (2) Inflection, (3) Coinage, (4) Conversion, (5) Acronym, (6) Initialism, (7) Compounding, (8) Back-formation, (9) Internal Change, (10) Suppletion, (11) Onomatopoeia, and (12) Multiple Processes. Among the 12 types of word formation found, the type of word formation most frequently used in aviation terms is inflection with the frequency of 112 data (31,20%). This finding shows that words used in aviation terms are sensitive to the grammatical needs of the words in the structure.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of coping with the hardship of life which is done by the protagonist and to know the contribution of the plot, setting, and character in revealing how to cope with the hardship of life. This analysis is related to the concept of life instincts by Sigmund Freud that is supported by the text and context-based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows that the protagonist copes with the hardship of life through two things; socializing with others and drawing pictures.

Abstract

The research aimed to find the types of language style and communication accommodation tendency used by football observer in Indonesia. The source of data in this research is ESPN FC Indonesia at episode June 18th 2016. This research focused on language style used by speakers of ESPN FC Indonesia. The writer used descriptive method which is describing the phenomenon based on the source of data. This research analyzed the conversation to find the types of language style and communication accommodation tendency in ESPN FC Indonesia. On the analysis, the writer found that there are four language styles namely formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Then, consultative style is the mostly language style used by the speakers with percentage is about 50%. Furthermore, the writer found that there are two strategies in communication accommodation tendency namely convergence and divergence. In addition, convergence is the mostly strategy used by the speakers of ESPN Indonesia with percentage is about 58%.

Abstract

This research describes about types of lexical and syntactical stylistic devices found in Mama Dedeh’s preaches in program “Mama dan Aa” in Indosiar. The source of data is transcript from eight videos Mama Dedeh in month January-June 2016 about the vice. From the analysis, Mama Dedeh’s preach uses seven types of lexical stylistic devices, those are interjection, simile, proverb, epigram, oxymoron, metaphor, and quotation and also uses eight types of syntactical stylistic devices, those are inversion, chiasmus, parallelism, repetition, climax, asyndenton, question in narrative and rhetorical question. There are 40 data of lexical stylistic devices found in this research and the most dominant is interjection (21 data) followed by quotation (11), oxymoron (2), simile (2), metaphor (1), proverb (1), and epigram (1). Then, syntactical stylistic devices found in Mama Dedeh’s preach has 76 data and the most dominant is question in narrative (31), followed by repetition (15), rhetorical question (11), parallelism (8), inversion and asyndenton has (4), chiasmus (2), and climax (1). So the most dominant of lexical stylistic device found in Mama Dedeh’s preach is interjection and the most dominant of syntactical stylistic devices is question in narrative.

Abstract

In the process of communication, speakers are expected to obey the maxim of cooperative principles to convey messages effectively. However, many speakers disobey it for some reasons. Flouting of maxim is one of cases when speakers fail to observe the maxim to generate an implicature. This research aimed to find the types of flouting of maxim and the reasons of indirectness in flouting the maxim done by Politician guests in two episode of Mata Najwa Talk Show named Adu Lantang Jelang Penentuan and Babak Akhir Pilpres. The method of this research is descriptive research . The data of this research were the utterances of guests that flout the maxim of cooperative principles. It is found that there were total of 55 utterances that flout the maxim of cooperative principles that were analyzed. The results show that the Politician guests flout maxim of quantity and manner the most with frequency of 53.96% and 36.50%. Flouting of maxim of quality and relation rarely appeared with the same frequency, 4.76%. It is also found that the reasons of indirectness in flouting the maxim were vary such as interestingness, increasing the force’s of messages, competing goals, and politeness. However, increasing the force of the messages and politeness are two reasons that occurred more frequent in comparison with interestingness and competing goals. This research implicated that politician guests convey messages by flouting maxim for many reasons in order to gain support from masses.

Abstract

This Paper is intended to show how one a single reality, that is International Politics and National Resilience, is presented and viewed by the two major of presidential candidates in 2014. In this paper, van Dijk’s (2004) framework adopted form Politics, ideology and discourse is used identify the discursive structures within the transcription of political campaign debate and to find out the ideology underlying them. The macro strategies of ‘positive self-representation’ and ‘negative other-representation’ (which are intimately tied up with ‘Polarization’ of in group vs. out group ideologies or US-THEM) and more strategies become very accurate criteria for the evaluation of attitudes, and opinions. The findings of this study can conducive to expanding readers’ critical thinking abilities in comprehension and production of language.
