Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to examine the difference in meaning in verbal analysis in Gojek and Grab advertisements. The purpose of this research is to find the difference in meaning in verbal analysis at the level of Systemic Functional Linguistics, namely ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunction. The data were analyzed using the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics Halliday (2006). The data is the utterances contained in the Gojek and Grab advertising videos. The method of this research uses descriptive qualitative research. The results showed that there were some differences in the two advertisements in using Systemic Functional Linguistics, namely mood analysis, attitude, modality, graduation, and theme. The five differences are dominated by Gojek advertisements.Key words: systemic functional linguistics, semiotics, advertisementAbstarkPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji perbedaan makna dalam analisis verbal pada iklan Gojek dan Grab. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan makna dalam analisis verbal pada tingkat Systemic Functional Linguistics yaitu ideational, interpersonal, dan textual metafunction. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan theory Systemic Functional Linguistics Halliday (2006) dengan pedekatan semiotik. Datanya adalah ujaran-ujaran yang terdapat didalam vidio iklan Gojek dan Grab. Metode dari penelitian ini menggunakan descriptive qualitative research. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat beberapa perbedaan dalam kedua iklan dalam menggunakan Systemic Functional Linguistics, yaitu mood analysis, attitude, modality, graduation, dan theme. Lima perbedaan itu didominasi oleh iklan Gojek.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find the types of logical fallacies in argument of campaign team debate of Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data were analyzed by using theory of Damer (2009). The result of the research showed that of all sixty types of fallacy, there were only fifteen types were found. There are twelve types of fallacies produced by campaign team of Joko Widodo with twenty six occurrences and nine types of fallacies produced by campaign team of Prabowo with thirty three occurrences. Drawing the wrong conclusion fallacy was the most dominant type produced by campaign team of Jokowi with the proportion 19.23 %. The most dominant types produced by campaign team of Prabowo are using the wrong reasons and contrary-to-fact-hypothesis with the proportion 33.33%.Key words: Logical fallacy, argument, campaign team debate

Abstract

This study aims to determine the phenomenon of code switching and code mixing in the Toba Batak student community at Padang State University. The method used in this research is descriptive. The data from this study are utterances or expressions of conversation between Toba Batak students who can be seen on the dialogue transcript. Code switching was found in this study as many as 24 data, while the mixed code was found as many as 29 data. Research findings show that conversations between students of the Toba Batak community at Padang State University more often use 29 data mixed codes, while 24 code changes are found. Furthermore, for the type of code switching found inter-sentential switching as the type that appears the most as many as 13 data (54.17%), while for the mixed code type found the insertion of words is the most frequently used as many as 21 data (72.42%). Next, for the reason that code switching is most often found is talk about particular topic as many as 15 data (62.5%), while for the purpose of mixed code that is often found, the socio expressive function is 19 data (65.5%).

Abstract

AbstractThis study is aimed to seek how far the novel of We Cast A Shadow (2019) by Maurice Carlos Ruffin reflected the issues of racial discrimination. Racial discrimination refers to the character who face discrimination through mistreatment and violence that make a great impact in the future. The unnamed character had been through a difficult time since he was a child. This analysis is related to the postcolonial theory proposed by Pieterse and Powell (2016).  The use of theory was based on the interpretation in the text and context of the novel. The data was collected from the quotation in the novel. The data collection was in the form of sentences and paragraphs. This research was a descriptive and content analysis study. The result of the study shows that the racial discrimination of African-American character can be seen  through violence to African-American and arbitrary Policy on Economic Aspect.  In conclusion, in this post-civil rights movement era, African-Americans still face racial discrimination.

Abstract

This research is aim to find the phonological and lexical comparison of Pariaman dialect with standard Minangkabau. This reserach used descriptive method to conduct the research. Data of this research are the transcription of recorded conversation. The participants who act the subject of the study and became the source of data are the people wholive in Padang and the people who live in Pariaman. The research instrument was open word classes that consisted of verb, noun, adjective and adverb which choosen randomly in the data interview. To collect the data, it used the instrument in the form of list as guidance to ask native speakers, this list of words contained 80 basic vocabularies. Moleang (2005) theory to analyze the data which containinformationwere recorded. Recording was done in order to provide a more accurate data, especially regarding the pronounciation of sounds.

Abstract

This article explores a selection news on Aljazeera online website about the issue of sweeping boycott on France Goods. This problem caused by the statement of France Macron as the President of French sprinkling the Islamophobia by his own statements. It was raising Muslim’s anger around the world. Based on the issues, this study will analyse about the issue and guided by the analytic framework of Appraisal, which is concern on an engagement analysis. The study reveals that heteroglossic occurred from the writer and the researcher found that the writer has a tendency to indulgence which showed dialogic contraction on the issue mentioned belong to disclaim and proclaims the propositions.

Abstract

Although there have been various semantics studies of news reports, so far the use of lexico-semantics approach in analysing news reports has not been common. The aim of this research is analyze the lexical relations and meaning properties in news reports. It was carried out descriptive-qualitatively. Eight news reports in Okezone.com and eight news reports in Tribunnews.com were studied by using Saeed’s (2009) theory of lexical relations and Siregar (1992) and Leech’s (19981) theory of meaning properties. After completing the analysis, it was found that news news reports in Tribunnews.com are slightly different with the news reports in Okezone.com. There are six types of lexical relations in Tribunnews.com: hyponymy, polysemy, homonymy, synonymy, antonymy, and metonymy, while there are only five types of lexical relations in Okezone.com: hyponymy, polysemy, synonymy, antonymy, and metonymy. In addition, there are five types of meaning properties in Tribunnews.com: meaningfulness, ambiguity, redundancy, anomaly, and contradictory, while there are only four types of meanin properties in Okezone.com: meaningfulness, ambihuity, redundancy, and anomaly.

Abstract

This study specifically discusses the representation of Orlando shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in the modern U.S. history taking place on June 11, 2016 in Florida, including the portrayal of the Muslim offender and the similarities and differences in contents of the shooting coverage in online news articles of two media, Fox News and Al Jazeera. Online news articles about the shooting from Fox News and Al Jazeera were selected as the data in this study. Social Actor Representation of Van Leeuwen (2008), News Schemata of Van Dijk (1986), and the analysis of socio-cultural practices of Fairclough (1995) were used to analyze data. The results of analysis showed that there were eight representational categories used by both media to portray the offender. In addition, both media provided similar coverage about the details and chronology of the shooting, the previous investigations on the offender, and comments from witnesses and the owner of the club, but differed in presenting the offender’s personal details and his association to ISIS terrorist group. Lastly, there were three socio-cultural practices – institutional context, situational context, and societal context – that explained the shooting and its different coverage in both media.

Abstract

This is an analysis of the novel entitled Sold (2006) written by Patricia MacCormick. This analysis looks at the agency shown by female characters in the novel who suffered because of patriarchy in Nepal. This analysis uses the concept of agency seen from feminist perspective. The analysis focuses on the agency form shown by female characters. This analysis uses fictional devices such as setting, plot, character to discover the issue. The result of the study shows female character shown agency in the form of intrinsic agency, self-definition and self-direction.

Abstract

This article discusses a novel entitled The Hate U Give (2017) by Angie Thomas. The issue raises structured racism against African-Americans after the existence of human rights and to find out to what extent the implied author contributed to expressing the issue. This analysis uses Gramsci's Hegemony theory, interpretation of the text and context to dissect the contents of the novel. The results of the analysis shows that structured racism can be seen in two forms: the media and institutions. First of the two is the media as a stereotype circulator and the last of the two the institution discriminates against African-Americans.
