Abstract

In delivering critics, the use of satire is indispensable so that the critics can be accepted or heard, because satire is very much used as a tool to convey the critics. This study aims to analyze the types and techniques of satire introduced by Abeshaus (2018) and Luke Endley (2017). The method used in this research is descriptive method. There are two problems in this study, (1) what types and (2) technique of the satire used by Rocky Gerung in his speech. The results show that in 24 techniques  of satire there are 14 techniques of satire with Inflation (38.9%), Hyperbole (14.9%) and Innuendo (14.9 %) being the highest found and from 3 types of satire were found that Juvenalian (57.3%) as the dominant type. The result of this research is that Rocky Gerung tends to use critics by using Inflation with exaggerating the mistakes and circumstances. Regarding the type, the most commonly type found in this study is the Juvenalian type. Because Rocky Gerung tends to use the type of sarcasm that is harsh and reproachful

Abstract

 This study aims to examine the difference of meaning in visual analysis in BJB Bank and HSBC Bank advertisements. The purpose of this research is to find the difference in meaning in the visual analysis of Kress and Leeuwen metafunction, namely representational, interactional, and compositional. The data were analyzed using the theory of grammar of visual design Kress and Leeuwen (1996). The data is the visual contained in the BJB bank and the HSBC bank advertisement videos. The method of this research uses descriptive qualitative research. The results showed some differences in BJB bank and HSBC bank advertisements in visuals which are a narrative reactional phenomenon and conceptual, symbolic attribute in representational, equality in interactional, and foregrounding and backgrounding in compositional.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the dominant types of word-formation process of slang words found in the Looper movie script. The type of this research is descriptive research. This research used the theory about word-formation by Mattiello (2008) and Yule (2010). In the finding, the researcher found five types of slang word-formation processes in the Looper movie script. They were blending, clipping, coinage, compounding, and variation. The researcher found 12 slang words with blending type (25.53%), 9 slang words with clipping type (19.14%), 12 slang words with coinage type (25.53%), 6 slang words with compounding type (12.76%), and 8 slang words with variation type (17.02%). The most dominant type of slang word-formation in the Looper movie script is blending and coinage.Key words: Language variation, slang word, word formation

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find the multimodal analysis used in Man of Steel and Avengers Infinity Wars movie posters. The Method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method. This research used theory semiotic approach which focuses on multimodal system proposed by Cheong (2004). The researcher found 6 types elements of multimodal in Man of Steel and Avengers Infinity Wars posters such as material, behavioral, mental, identifying, attributive, and intensive. The data were collected by analysis the movie posters. They were 30% on material, 15% on behavioral, 15% on mental, 15% on identifying, 10% on attributive, and 15% on intensive in Man of Steel poster. Meanwhile in Avengers Infinity Wars poster, the research found 40% on material, 5% on behavioral, 15% on mental, 10% on identifying, 10% on attributive, 20% on intensive.

Abstract

This study discusses "A Multimodal Analysis of Uda and Uni Selection' Poster Advertisement in Pesisir Selatan" which is a talent search event poster that aims to promote tourism. Thus, to convey the message in the poster not only use visual elements but also verbal elements. The purpose of this research is to identify visual and verbal elements, as well as to describe the representation of verbal and visual elements represented in the message. This study used a qualitative descriptive method and the data sources were three posters of Uda Uni Election which were randomly selected on the internet. This analysis focused on Halliday's (2004) ideational function to analyze verbal texts,  Kress' and van Leeuwen's (2006) representations to analyze visual texts, and Cheong's (2004) theory to identify the structure of poster advertisements. The results of the analysis show that the most common verbal elements used in posters were announcements and the most common visual elements in posters were emblems. The verbal elements are often represented by the material process, while the visual elements are represented by the Action process and Reactional Process.

Abstract

In language study, peech act is the act when someone does speech to show the meaning by the speakers when communication occurs. Speech acts also can be analyzed from video that found in movie, talk show, stand up comedy, comedy video. Illocutionary acts is the utterence that force the listener to do something. In this research focuses with illocutionary acts produced by the main characters in Bang Ijal TV videos. The purpose of this research are to describe the types of illocutionary acts and the function of illocutionary acts used by each main character in the video which is downloaded from Instagram based on theory of Searle. The type of the research in this study are qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research is used to analyze the data in the form text and the quantitative act is used to calculatethe number of illocutionary acts and function of illocutionary acts used in Bang Ijal TV videos to conclude which type of illocutionary acts is dominantly used. This study found that there are five types of illocutionary acts and also 26 functions of illocutionary act. This study shows, the dominant illocutionary is directives which total persentage 43.83% and the dominant function of illocutionary acts is asking which total persentage 27.16%.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the gender inequality against Nissa Sabyan in news affair videos comment space in YouTube. The source of data are the bad comments written by netizens of Indonesia. The data in this study are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences that found in the comments section which contain gender inequality. Van Dijk’s theory is applied in this study. The result of this study shows that most of netizens in Indonesia only throw the bad comments which contain gender inequality against Nissa Sabyan by judging her appearance, giving her a bad label,insulting her for taking someone’s husband.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the origin of Minangkabaunese people’s ancestors shown in the speech “Pasambahan Maanta Marapulai” produced by ELTA Record Bukittinggi. This research discussed about the origin of Minangkabaunese on that video based on myth. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. It was a method that researched an object by explaining it. The researcher collected the supporting data from some books; those are literature books, journals and another books that related with this research. In analyzing the data, researcher described the implicit meaning from the speech of “Pasambahan Maanta Marapulai”. It was the speech from the groom’s family and the bride’s family. The result of this research told that the origin of Minangkabaunese was the third son of Sultan Iskandar Zulkarnain named Maharaja Diraja. He sailed through Hindia Ocean. He found a piece of land in the west of Sumatera which he called Perca island or known as Minangkabau. Maharaja Diraja saw Mount Merapi, and then his group and he went to the top of that mount. They built a village there firstly named Siligundi Nan Baseloin Pariangan Padang Panjang. Based on the analysis of the story about the origin of Minangkabaunese in the speech”Pasambahan Maanta Marapulai”, the researcher concluded that the story was the myth.

This study is aimed to expose the issue about abusing supremacy which is done by the communist government toward the citizens and to know the contribution of poetic elements; irony,imagery,and symbol in revealing the issue of abusing supremacy. This analysis is related to the concept of power by Michel Foucault. The result of this analysis shows that abusing supremacy is done in two strategies; enforcing laws and using state’s apparatus

Abstract

Slang is the most informal form of cammunication in certai communities, Yule (2006). Slang comes in different kind of varities based on the process it appear. Song is one of many media that slang could appear and exist. Some song creator include slang as one of their prefer word selection putting in the lyrics. One of the singer is Benjamin Zephaniah. Benjamin uses a lot of slang in his song. This kind of phenomenon in language, slang, interest linguists to analyze songs that have slang but only a few study in Benjamin Zephaniah works. This research analyze slangs that occur in Benjamin Zephaniag songs using theory of language varities by Yule. There are six types of slangs that exist in Benjamin’s selected songs. Most common slang are coinage and multiple process. The goal of Benjamin using slang on his works are to show his identitiy as african born and to show his hate against racism.
