Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of a novel written by Richard Powers entitled The Overstory (2018). It explores the issue of collective consciousness against the destruction of forest. The concept of eco-criticism by Thomas K. is applied to analyze this novel. This analysis focuses on how the concept of collective consciousness is used to prevent deforestation in several characters. This analysis also depends on the character to determine which chapter of the novel are used as the data. The result of the study shows that the characters employ several collective methods to fight against illegal logging in form of protest, petition, and, restoration of nature. In conclusion, collective consciousness can be also applied to prevent destruction of the forest

Abstract

This is an analysis of the novel A Monster Calls (2011) written by Patrick Ness. The problem of this study is how far the novel A Monster Calls (2011) expose the issue about reality denial. The purpose of this study is to seek how far the characters, twelve years old child, setting, and plot (conflict) reflects the issue about reality denial. This analysis deals with the concept of defense mechanism by Sigmund Freud. The result of this analysis shows that the protagonist does the reality denial to refuse the unpleasant things in his family. This can be seen through his behavior and attitude.

Abstract

AbstractThis thesis is an analysis of a novel written by Patricia McCormick entitled Sold (2006). This analysis looks at the gender discrimination that is experienced by women who are victims of gender discrimination acts. This analysis is related to the feminist approach and the concept of gender discrimination by Simone de Beauvoir. The analysis focuses on the issue of gender discrimination. The aim of this analysis is to what extent the character, conflict (plot), setting and stage direction contribute to reveal the issue of gender discrimination. This analysis also depends a lot on the narator to determine which parts of the novel are used as the data. The result of the study shows that Lakhsmi experienced gender discrimination such as marginalization, subordination, stereotype, violence and double burden.

Abstract

AbstractSarcasm (sarcasm) is one of the figurative language or language styles most used with the intention to mock or tease others. Sarcasm can be observed in daily conversations and in reality shows and stand-up comedy. One of the world's stand-up comedians who use sarcasm in his humor is Keith Alberstadt. The purpose of this paper is to explain the types of sarcasm used by Keith Alberstadt in his stand-up comedy. The theory used to analyze the types of sarcasm is the theory of Elizabeth Camp (1994). There are four types of sarcasm classified by Elizabeth Camp namely propositional sarcasm, lexical sarcasm, like'-prefixed sarcasm, illocutionary sarcasm. The results of this paper show Keith Alberstadt uses four types of sarcasm with different presentation. The most dominant type of sarcasm is the illocutionary sarcasm with as many as (37%). Other dominant sarcasm types are lexical sarcasm (32%), propositional sarcasm (26%) and the least is like'-prefixed sarcasm (5%). It can be concluded that illocutionary sarcasm is the most dominant type of sarcasm used by comedian Keith Alberstadt in his stand-up comedy.

Abstract

Makalah ini bertujuan untuk (1) Mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe pertanyaan, (2) Pola-pola pertanyaan yang digunakan oleh guru-guru Tiji Homeschooling terhadap siswa penyandang Asperger. Kemudian, (3) juga mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis tanggapan dari siswa penyandang Asperger terhadap pertanyaan-pertanyaan dari guru-guru tersebut. Makalah ini mengambil 5 kali rekaman dialog antara anak penyandang Asperger dengan guru-guru ketika proses belajar mengajar sebagai data, yaitu ujaran- ujaran yang termasuk ke dalam rogative. Dari hasil penelitian, terlihat adanya 430 pertanyaan dimana jenis direct rogative dengan jumlah 373 (86,7%) yang paling banyak digunakan dan jenis indirect rogative tidak langsung 57 (13,3%). dari pengelompokkan jenis pertanyaan, ditemukan sebanyak 372 (86,5%) information-seeking question, 47 (10,9%) information-checking question, dan 11 (2,6%) clarification question, guru banyak menggunakan information-seeking question. Kemudian, juga ditemukan jenis-jenis tanggapan sebanyak 112 tanggapan yaitu absurd response (AR) 18 tanggapan, odd response (OR) 62 tanggapan, more relevant but not very polite (RnP) 6 tanggapan, dan marginal response (MR) 26 tanggapan dimana odd response paling banyak muncul sebagai tanggapan terhadap pertanyaan guru-guru. Data ini menyimpulkan bahwa jenis tanggapan odd response prioritas muncul dalam tanggapan-tanggapan oleh siswa, yang berumur enam tahun, dengan gangguan Asperger tersebut yang menunjuukkan mengalami masalah dalam memahami pertanyaan-pertanyaan (language comprehension disorder) dari guru-guru Tiji Homeschooling.

Abstract

This article entitled Learning to Cherish focuses on analyze the five poems by Audre Lorde which are Who Said It Was Simple, For Each Of You, A Woman Speaks, A Litany For Survival, and Movement Song. The problem in this analysis how far the five poems by Audre Lorde expose the issue of learning to cherish of the Black Women. The aim of this analysis is to find out how far the five poems by Audre Lorde expose the issue of learning to cherish in the Black women. This analysis is involved poetic elements that are imagery, repetition, speaker, and tone to reveal the issue. The analysis is related to the concept of Feminism by Bell Hook (1984) and Naomi Wolf (2002). The result of this analysis shows the Black women have good attitude and behavior to care deeply for their identity.

Abstract

 This article is about the analysis of a novel Far Away from Tree (2017) by Andrew Solomon. There are two keywords that need to be explained in this study: Fighting and disability condition. According to Merriam-Webster (2018) fight means to put effort as determined effort. While according to Merriam Webster Dictionary disability means a physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person’s ability to engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in typical daily activities and interaction. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary condition means something essential to the appearance or occurrence of something else

Abstract

This study aims to compare the differences and the similarities between Indonesia and English pop song lyrics in the level of ideational metafunction, The systemic functional linguistics theory by Halliday was applied to analyze this research. The method used in this research was a descriptive research method. The results of the study show that they share two similarities and six differences in the level of ideational metafunction. The conclusion obtained from the findings is that they are more different rather than similar and the differences in how they produces the song lyric affected by the differences in cultural background of the song which are represented through song lyrics to the different ways of producing structure of clauses and selection of words in the ideational level of metafunction.

Abstract

This research aims to find elements of conversational structures that happen between physiotherapist and his patients at YARSI Padang Panjang when doing medical consultation. This research uses descriptive method to conduct the research. Data of this research are the transcription of recorded conversation that happens during therapy process. The participants who act as the subject of the study and became the source of the data are physiotherapist and his patients at YARSI Padang Panjang.Total patients who do therapy treatment with therapist are 20 patients. From 20 patients, seven of them are new patients, and thirteen of them are regular patients. This research uses Goutsos (2005) theory to analyze elements in global structure of conversation. Meanwhile, Stenstrom (1994) theory uses to analyze the elements of turn-taking systems in local structure of conversation. Result of this research shows that the conversation that happens between physiotherapist and his patients is structured and organized. In global structure section, it is found that every conversation has the elements of opening, body, and closing even though not all elements found in each section. Then, in turn-taking systems case, it is found that three strategies in turn-taking systems found in the research. They are turn-yielding strategy, taking the turn strategy, and turn-holding strategy.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of a play written by Martin Mcdonagh entitled The Pillowman (2003). This analysis look at the injustice after civil right movement is not only in real life, but in literature there is a problem the injustice that attacks the lower class because their profession considered lowly than the upper class. This analysis employs Marxist literary theory to explain the phenomena in the play. In this analysis, the protagonist’s injustice towards human rights can been seen through two ways: how he faces and shows several forms of the injustice towards human rights in America after civil right movement that still occurred. This analysis also depends a lot on the narrator to determine which parts of the play are used as the data. The result of the study shows that Katurian experienced injustice to get his righs and injustice in law.
