Abstract

Human rights apply universally regardless of age, religion, gender, nationality, social status, political views, or local language. However, in practice, intolerant behavior is still widely found. This then gave birth to the term marginalized, such as religious minorities, the weak, powerless, poor, and suburban communities. Departing from these problems, it is important to re-read the hadith guidance to determine tolerant, humanist, and respectful attitudes towards others within the framework of human rights. Two questions become the initial basis of the study; first, how does the hadith view marginalized people? Second, how does Hassan Hanafi’s Hermeneutics interpret the hadith on human rights? Both questions were then analyzed using a qualitative approach with descriptive-analysis-based library research and content analysis as a data analysis technique. The results of this study show that Hassan Hanafi’s hermeneutic reading of the hadith termed the value of equality as “being”, with elements such as brotherhood, equality, and humanity included in “being with others”. In addition, safeguarding and fulfilling human rights for marginalized groups, such as the right to life, justice, equality, property, religious freedom, and decent wages, is part of the “being in the world” referred to in the hadith. This is corroborated by the awareness of the Prophet Muhammad, who always provided examples and guidance in upholding and protecting human rights, especially for marginalized groups.

Abstract

In recent years, various moral issues such as bullying, individualism, and diminished social awareness among students have emerged as critical concerns in education. In response to this, it becomes imperative to examine the concept of akhlāq (moral character) within Islamic education, particularly through the integration of the Prophet’s hadith into the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) curriculum. This research posits two central questions: first, what is the meaning of riwāyah Aḥmad No. 8952, and second, how can the values encapsulated in this hadith be effectively implemented to optimize the function of the PAI curriculum? These questions are analyzed using a qualitative-descriptive methodology, employing a literature study approach that involves a comprehensive review, examination, and comparison of various hadiths and Islamic educational texts. The findings suggest that the conceptual emphasis on akhlāq, which underscores its central role as the primary mission of prophethood, should serve as the foundational framework for the PAI curriculum. Furthermore, the research identifies the application of a Deep Learning approach incorporating Mindful, Meaningful, and Joyful Learning strategies as a promising method for internalizing akhlāq values into students’ lives.

Abstract

Gender issues constitute a prominent area of inquiry in Islamic studies, particularly about the interpretation of hadith. This is due to the frequent portrayal of women in subordinate positions within patriarchal constructions, including in the interpretation of hadith texts. Several hadiths are even perceived to carry misogynistic discourse, raising critical questions regarding gender justice in Islam. Departing from this discourse, this study formulates two main research questions; first, how can the contextualization of hadiths considered misogynistic be understood within Islam? second, how can Fazlur Rahman’s double movement hermeneutical approach aid in interpreting such hadiths?Utilizing a literature review method and a qualitative-descriptive approach, this research explores the dialectical relationship between the original socio-historical context in which the hadiths were revealed and the universal principles that may be derived to address contemporary challenges. The findings indicate that the emergence of misogynistic views is largely influenced by conservative scholars’ interpretations, which often rely on sacred texts as ontological foundations. These interpretations tend to neglect the socio-historical aspects accompanying the hadiths’ emergence, especially significant in a modern era characterized by fundamentally different social constructs. Therefore, hadiths deemed misogynistic need to be reinterpreted more justly through a socio-cultural lens grounded in the Prophet’s time, as well as through universal ethical values aligned with the spirit of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah.

Abstract

Ecological problems today are becoming increasingly complex and require serious attention. In this situation, Islamic mass organizations (Ormas), which are generally seen as religious institutions with roles in protecting and caring for the environment, have ironically become involved in the exploitation of natural resources. This became more apparent after the Indonesian government approved a draft law that allows major Islamic organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah to manage mining operations. Based on this issue, this study aims to explain how ecological values can be integrated into the learning system of Islamic religious education institutions in Indonesia. The study focuses on two main questions; first, how can ecological concepts be introduced through progressive Islamic thinking?; and second, how can these concepts be applied in Islamic educational settings? Using a library research method, this study analyzes a variety of related literature. The results show that ideas such as ecoreligiosity, ecotheology, ecosufism, Islamic ecocentrism, eco-pesantren, and Islamic environmental law can serve as useful frameworks for teaching in Islamic schools. These concepts help strengthen the idea that humans live and coexist with nature, so mutual respect between people and the environment should be nurtured through learning processes based on ecological values.

Abstract

The religious practices of Muslims consequence of the interpretive models they use present an interesting subject for study. The presence of both textual and contextual approaches has, to some extent, influenced differences in religious attitudes and behaviors. Therefore, this research seeks to identify the differences between textual and contextual models of understanding hadith and their influence on religious tolerance and interfaith cooperation. To begin the study, two research questions are posed: First, how do the attitudes toward religious tolerance compare between students with a textualist understanding and those with a contextualist understanding of hadith? Second, how do their attitudes toward cooperation differ in understanding hadith? These research questions are examined through quantitative research using a causal-comparative (ex post facto) method with a sample of second-semester students from the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Da'wah at IAIN Kediri. The research indicates that there is a significant difference between textual and contextual groups in terms of religious tolerance. The t-test results show a sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, smaller than 0.050, indicating a statistically significant difference. Likewise, in terms of cooperation attitude between the textual and contextual groups, the t-test results showed a sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000, which is smaller than 0.050, so the difference is quite significant.

Abstract

Character development in education cannot be separated from the role of the family as the first and main environment in the process of internalizing good values. In the tradition of Islamic education, especially related to the Muslim family, the Ḥadīth becomes one of the main sources of shaping the moral and spiritual values of students. This study examines in depth the role of Ḥadīth in the formation of children’s character through the tradition of Muslim family education. Two questions become the starting point of the study: first, how is Ḥadīth conceptualized in the form of a character education framework; second, how is the implementation of Ḥadīth in overcoming the moral-spiritual crisis of each learner? Through a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach based on library research, data is obtained from observation and inventory of various literatures that speak about this matter. The results showed that the Ḥadīth is not only a normative foundation, but also used as a practical guide in shaping character such as honesty, responsibility, courtesy, and empathy. In fact, the prophet also consciously modeled the importance of good character which was reflected in the relationships that took place with the companions. In addition, the integration of Ḥadīth values in daily family routines has proven effective in building children’s moral awareness from an early age. In the end, this study confirms the importance of revitalizing the role of Ḥadīth in family-based character education to strengthen the moral foundation of the young Muslim generation in the modern era.

Abstract

Various religious practices flourish in Indonesia, particularly amidst the development of Islamic studies discourse. In this context, the tradition of wiridan after the Fajr prayer until isyrâq (mid-morning) serves as tangible evidence of the enduring religious traditions within the Banjar community. Initial assumptions suggest a strong connection between this tradition and prophetic hadiths, as the dzikir and other practices performed until isyrâq are mentioned in the hadiths. Based on this reality, this study specifically examines the form, motivation, and significance of the implementation of this tradition. Through the living hadith approach, the research findings reveal that the transmission of hadiths concerning dzikir and utilizing the time for worship until isyrâq is received diversely, leading to the emergence of various forms and variations of worship. From the perspective of functional reception, the Banjar community perceives the virtues of wiridan after Fajr until isyrâq, which is tied to their understanding and interpretation of the term dzikir in the hadith texts as a form of exegetical reception. Furthermore, dzikir is interpreted in four categories: dzikir through tasbih, dzikir through Quranic recitation, dzikir through religious study sessions, and dzikir through remembrance of Allah. On the aesthetic side, the unique rhythm and manner of reciting wirid among the Banjar community are evident. Another significant aspect is the prominent role of religious leaders and pesantren within the community, where the tradition has grown stronger and is consciously upheld.
