Abstract

Immigration has become one of the reasons for an individual to experience a second or foreign language acquisition, but at the same time, it may also result in language loss, or called language attrition. For this reason, conducting research on immigrants may give a broad insight regarding language acquisition and attrition. This study aims to reveal the language attrition experienced by an Indonesian child born in Japan who acquired Japanese as her first language and moved to Indonesia where she acquired her second language but at the same time also lost her first language during the second language acquisition. This study also investigates the reasons behind first language attrition, and the parent’s role to maintain their children’s first language. Qualitative research was conducted by using interview and observation techniques to gather information regarding the process of attrition. Overall, the study offers insight into how fast language attrition can happen to a child. This study further reveals the causes of first language attrition which include the language proficiency of the child at the onset of attrition, the decrease of the first language input, the increase of the second language input, and the language proficiency of the parent. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper aims to describe the contrasting images of two women in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Roman Bumi Manusia, namely Nyai Ontosoroh and her daughter, Annelis. The description of the contradictory self-images of Nyai Ontosoroh and Annelis is interesting to discuss considering the differences in racial background, social class, education, and the relationship between these characters and Minke, which is the storyteller's point of view in this novel. This research on Roman Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer uses a feminist literary criticism approach. Roman Bumi Manusia has been widely studied through a feminist approach by emphasizing the character of Nyai Ontosoroh as a figure with the qualities of a feminist, but fails to see that the character of Annelis is depicted as the exact opposite of her mother. Annelis' character is depicted through the ideal and normative female self-image, as the other who depends on her mother and Minke's character who later becomes her partner. Annelis is described as an inferior and bound character, a depiction of a woman's self-image that is very far from feminist qualities. Keywords: Bumi Manusia, Contradiction, Citra Perempuan, Nyai Ontosoroh, Annelis.

Abstract

The obstacles and difficulties that students faced in the learning process during the pandemic era, which could have harmed their English learning achievement, inspired this study. This research sought to investigate the efficacy of Adversity Quotient training as a means of improving students' responses and capacities in dealing with issues during the pandemic era, which is likely to have a positive impact on their English learning outcomes. This study used an experimental design and a quantitative method. The cluster sampling technique was used to pick 78 students as participants. They are from the experimental class of XI MIPA 3 and the control class of XI MIPA 2. The experimental class received Adversity Quotient instruction, while the control group did not. Tests (pre-and post-tests), questionnaires, and documentation were utilized to collect data for this study. The hypothetical test was an independent sample t-test. According to the data obtained, the average post-test score in the experimental class was 79.69, while the control class was 76.21. The value of Sig. (2-tailed) in the hypothetical test was 0.022 (Sig. (2-tailed) 0.05). The null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted based on the interpretation. It means that Adversity Quotient training is highly successful in raising students' adversity quotients in order to improve learning outcomes during pandemics. This discovery is likely to assist teachers in improving students' answers and abilities when confronted with issues, which will have a positive impact on their English learning accomplishments during the epidemic period. Keywords: Adversity Quotient, English Learning Achievement, Pandemic Era.
