Abstract

ABSTRACT The cruciality of literary work implementation in language learning class is settled, so it is included in the senior high school curriculum as a mandatory lesson. It is essential, for many advantageous aspects in EFL classroom can be obtained from implementing it. This study aimed to know the effectiveness of using literature as material for senior high school students in learning English. The data from this study was collected from interviews and literature reviews in the form of qualitative descriptive research. Some points discussed in the interview are used as primary data. Those included the implementation of literature in senior high school in Indonesia in general and the aim of implementing it, ways to apply narrative in EFL class, the advantages aspects of using drama as literary work to teach EFL class, challenges and solutions of implementing it, the reasons why it is applied in certain levels of education in Indonesia, and literature work implementation in Indonesia's curriculum. The research showed how literary work is worth to be applied in senior high school English courses. In sum, implementing literature in the EFL teaching and learning process was beneficial and prime. Abstract

This study described about the source of reading material that students use for individual learning in English class and also their challenges on reading. Source of reading materials include teaching material, both written and unwritten, or all types of materials used to teachers in carrying out teaching and learning activities. The design of this research using descriptive qualitative. The participants in this research included 26 students from twelfth grade at MAN Tanah Laut. On collecting data, the researcher used observation and interview. The data were analyze based on descriptive qualitative approach. Based on the result of the research it could be concluded that source of reading material that students used for individual learning in English class from school program and also provide the link to support teaching and learning activity. The challenges that students face when comprehending the source of reading materials for individual learning in English class such as lack of vocabularies, grammatical error, not understand meaning, and difficult to translate every new word. Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the types, factors and level of students’ anxiety in English speaking course. The participant of this research was 27 students from the fourth semester of English Language Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Qomaruddin in 2021/2022 academic year. This research used three instruments namely observation checklist, questionnaire sheet and interview guidelines. This researcher used FLACS questionnaire as its main instrument to identify the cause and the level of students’ anxiety in speaking English. Whereby, an observation had done by the researcher for three times to validate the behavior and the problems experienced by the participant. To collect more information about the anxiety did by the participants, an interview section was held by the researcher. The researcher used purposive sampling and chose 8 participants based on their anxiety score. Based on the calculated data done by the researcher on observation sheet, it showed that the category of students’ level of anxiety was on moderate level with the total score 1956 and its average (mean) was 72,44; the types of students’ anxiety were communicative apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation in which students showed wrong attribution of body signal, lack of vocabulary, low English proficiency, over self-prediction toward fear, over sensitivity toward threat, irrational faith and lack of preparation which became the factors caused students’ anxiety. Their way to overcome their anxiety were to make a good preparation, to try to relax, to think positive, to have peer seeking, and to withdraw. Keywords: students’ anxiety, speaking

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is intended to investigate the Effectiveness of Clustering Technique on Students’ Writing Skill: a Study on Islamic Senior High School Students’ in Mandailing Natal, Indonesia. This research used quantitave research by using experimental method. The sample were X MIPA 1 as experimental group that consisted of 24 students and X MIPA 2 as control group that consisted of 24 students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test in essay test form and analyzed by using Independent Sample T-test. The result of this research showed that the mean score of experimental group was higher than the mean score of control group. After doing t-test, the researcher found that tcount > ttable (6.98 > 2.012). It means Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that there was significant effect on students’ writing skill in learning by using clustering technique on Islamic Senior High School Students in Mandailing Natal, Indonesia. Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the blended learning model in improving critical thinking and communication skills of students at university. This is a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group design involving one experimental group and one control group. The research population comprised students sitting in the English Department of Education Faculty at Madura University, who are selected purposively. The data is about critical thinking skills that will gather using a test, while the data about communication skills are obtained through observations. The data will be analyzed using a paired sample t-test and an independent sample t-test. The findings show that, first, the implementation of the blended learning model effectively increases the critical thinking skils; second, the use of the blended learning model effectively improves students’ communication skills and third, based on the independent sample t-test, students’ critical thinking skills and communication skills in the experimental class had a significant difference from those in control class. Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the phonological interference occurs and factors that cause interference in pronouncing English sound on vowel and consonant sounds by students on Senior High School in Lombok. This research used descriptive-qualitative method and applied purposive sampling techniques with inclusion criteria. The respondents consisted 10 second grade Senior High School students. The data were collected by using audio recorder and interview. The finding of this research showed the interference that occurs on students of second grade is substitution, sound addition, sound omission and sound replacement. There were 36 type of interference occurred, namely sounds replacement or substitution made by students in pronouncing English sounds consisting 31 vowels, 3 consonants, 3 sound addition and 2 sound omission. Further, the factor affect phonological interference of students was linguistic factors. It was found that majority students who answered that the difficulty in pronouncing English sounds were in pronunciation itself, while another factor were deal with sound system differences between L1 and L2, inconsistency of English vowels, mother tongue interference and influence of spelling on pronunciation.

Abstract

This research aim to describe the implementation of listening method in english learning on Darsul Idhaf program and what are obstacles faced by students. Darsul Idhaf is one of method that guide students to improve their academic potency, in this case, especially english language. English learning through listening method conducted by performing contents of english vocabularies both the conversation or song. This process involve students concentration and sensitivity and also the cooperation between students and tutor. This research used qualitative descriptive studies. Data sources in this research are primary and secondary data, data collection procedures used are interview, observation and documentation. The results showed that by this english learning through listening method on Darsul Idhaf program, the tutor gave the well-understanding, guiding and motivating students about english. But there are obstacles in this learning process. The vary of students education background that not all of them have english mastery enough as one of obstacle that faced in this method implementation. Thus, the success of this program depend on the maximum effort, understanding and subject that presented by tutor and students all another policies that implemented continually by the stakeholder and grassroots. Abstract

ABSTRACTEnglish grammar is an interesting object to be discussed by all learners specifically for English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners in the digital age. It is because there are efforts to understand the correct grammar in each sentence by utilizing the gadget. Thus, this study aimed to find out Ms. Noning’s grammar explanation of several artists in Indonesia through her TikTok account (English with Ms. Noning). The data are taken from the TikTok videos on Ms. Noning’s TikTok account over the last six months of her grammar explanation and review (from December 2022 to February 2023) which focused on her grammar explanation of several artists in Indonesia. The study revealed that ten Indonesian artists have reviewed her with several tenses or grammar from present to future. Analyzing the videos and comments shows a good connection between Ms. Noning and the viewer (digital learner). This study is good and beneficial to enrich grammar understanding by utilizing technology. Abstract

ABSTRACTThere are some non-language factors which indicate that students have the difficulty in speaking and give an impact on the scholars' overall performance in speaking. This study investigated the problem of students in linguistic and nonlinguistic problems in learning the English speaking at the eighth grade students in Tarakan. This research used mixed methods. In this study, the researcher chose the entire class of VIII grade as a sample which consisted of 285 students. In collecting data, researcher used observation, interview and questionnaires as research instruments. Researcher used three main phases in analyzing research data, namely data reduction, data presentation, and verification of conclusion drawing. From the data analysis, the researcher found students in linguistic and nonlinguistic problems and the causes of problems in learning the English speaking, namely the problem of English speaking skills faced by students in the linguistic were lack of vocabulary (61%), poor grammar (69%) and poor pronunciation (64%). Because of these problems, students are reluctant to speak English in class. Furthermore, from the non-linguistic aspect, the problems faced by students were fear of making mistakes (65%), lack of confidence (67%) and fear of evaluation from teachers and friends (63%). Based on some finding, it can be concluded that the biggest cause of student problems in speaking English was fear and lack of confidence to speak English in class. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis is to reveal the language displayed at a street in a Chinatown area, Thailand. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method; it is to describe the conditions or phenomena. The data were taken from a Google Streetview application in Chinatown, Thailand. The data were analysed in terms the language(s) used and the sources of the signages. Based on the analysis, the signs in the area can be divided into three types: monolingual, bilingual, and trilingual. The languages displayed in monolingual signs are : Thai, and English. Meanwhile in bilingual signs, the language pairs employed are Thai-English, and, Thai-Chinese. Finally, trilingual signs show the trios of Thai-English-Japanese, and Thai-Chinese-English. In terms of their sources, all the monolingual signs are private signs, meaning they were made by non-governmental agencies. They are from the business institution. Most bilingual signs are public signs or top-down signs, made by the governmental agencies. Some others are displayed by private sectors. Finally, all the signs made in trilingual are bottom-up.
