Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of swearing word and the reasons of swearing word that are used on YouTube comment column. This study conducts a descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data is taken from comment column of video uploaded by CNN about political news on YouTube. In analyzing the data, the researcher employs the theory proposed by Lakoff (1975) in order to identify the types of swearing word and the theory of Andersson (in Karjalainen, 2002:23) in order to describe the reasons of swearing word. The result of this study reveals that there are 17 data of swearing words, categorized into two types of swearing word, which are strong and weak swearing word and three reasons of swearing word, which are psychological, social and linguistic motive. The most dominant type is strong swearing word and the most dominant reason of using swearing word is psychological motive. The word fuck as the powerful taboo word is the most dominant word contained in the expressions of swearing word.

Abstract

Video is one of instructional media used by English teachers to enhance students’ motivation and enthusiasm in learning English. This study aims to analyze students’ perception on the video used by English teachers in teaching English at a public islamic school in Tanah Datar, West Sumatera. This study was quantitative research involving 30 students as the sample. The instrument used was questionnaire constructed based on the theories of components of perception and advantages of video as instructional media in English learning. The questionnaire consisted of 38 items: 26 statements for cognitive aspect, 4 statements for affective aspect, and 8 statements for conative aspect of perception. To check the validity and reliability of the instrument, the researchers validated the questionnaire to 3 validators and then did try-out. The questionnaire was declared valid while the result of the try-out described that 26 items were valid and 12 items were revised, and the reliability was high (0.964) indicating that all of the items could be used to collect data. Data analysis showed that students’ perception on the video used by English teacher as an instructional media was strongly positive (66.67%) and positive (33.33%) meaning that students are welcome and feel very optimistic and highly motivated to the video used by the teachers in teaching English.

Abstract

This paper aimed to find out (1) the teacher’s challenges using the application in teaching online classrooms during pandemic COVID-19, and (2) the strategies used by teachers in teaching using the application. The participants of the research were the English teachers at SMA/SMK/MA in Yogyakarta, Gunungkidul, Magelang, and Kebumen. A qualitative method was employed in this research and using interview via WhatsApp as data collection. The findings showed that teachers had the challenges such as (1) operating the application during online learning, (2) developing the material, assessment, and evaluation in teaching, (3) developing the teaching method, (4) combining the material and application, and (5) motivating the students and parents. The strategies used by the teacher when using the application in teaching such as (1) watching the video tutorial, (2) choosing a suitable application for teaching, (3) arranging the new learning schedule, (4) developing the creativity in designing the material, and (5) giving the simple material and task for the students.

Abstract

As commonly known, the use of video in English Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms can facilitate the students to get more interested in learning and also enhance their communicative competences. This study aims to find out the effect of using video as teaching media in English class towards students’ achievement and obstacles in using it. It is designed in experimental study. The result of pre-test and post-test did not show significant differences although students’ scores increased. However, the result of observation showed students’ improvement in attitudes. They are motivated in learning through videos. They show positive attitudes although they undergo some obstacles in accessing the video outside the classroom namely internet-related problem such as sudden disconnected internet, running out internet data, as well as scheduled time for using handphone at school day. Besides, discussing the lesson from video in group chat of whatsapp is ineffective since they cannot follow the flow the information, since too many chats sent at the same time into group. However, the implementation of using video in this study can be implemented, since the learning activities were very enjoyable by using some techniques presented in this study.

Abstract

The narrative focuses on the importance of Cultural Capital in the Classroom through the experiences of Sofia, a Hispanic, trilingual, engineering student at Columbia University. Through her experiences, I highlight the importance of combining cultures and viewing diversity as a source of knowledge. Sofía’s narrative helps instructors understand the most critical aspects of culturally responsive teaching.

Abstract

This research was due to discover the effect of using peer editing to improve students writing. It has been done at SMPN 8 Bukittinggi because some of students in SMPN 8 Bukittinggi still had problems in mastering English especiallyin writing text. Some of the students had a problems in making paragpraph clearly, in organizing their ideas, to found their grammatical or vocabulary error and etc.. This research used experimental research. The researcher used quasi experimental design by using the pretest-posttest design. To determine sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The data was got through pretest and posttest to experimental and control class. To analyze the data, the researcher used the normality by using Lilliefors test and the homogeneity test by using F test and to test the hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into t-table with level of significant α=0.05.From the result and accounting the pre-test and pos-test scores of experiment class, it was found using peer editing in writing had better result than not using peer editing.

Abstract

Research on the use of language is growing over time as many theories of language use are found. Language is no longer just for communicating but identifying something either implicitly or not. This paper entitled “Determining Illocutionary Act with VARIES Models” discusses the language use to identify the act of utterance by knowing the context and social background in panel discussion conducted by descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis method and focused on language use based on the phenomenon of the panel discussion. The data in this study was in the form of utterance containing lexical items which is used to refer to speakers’ language uses in conveying social background and action. This research applied sociopragmatic approach to analyze speakers' social background using VARIES Model theory and speakers’ meaning using Illocutionary Act theory through language use. The result of this study shows that vocational language can determine acts such as representative, expressive, directive speech act; age language to directive speech act; religion language to representative, directive and expressive speech act; informality language to representative, expressive and declarative speech act; education background to representative, directive, expressive, commissive speech act; sex language to representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative speech act.

Abstract

E-portfolio is implemented in Indonesian universities to build learners’ capacity in monitoring and managing the learning in a technology-enhanced environment. In this regard, it is substantial for the institutions to acknowledge the learners' perspective in using the e-portfolio for the purpose of continuous development. This study was aimed at probing students' perceptions of utilizing e-portfolio for learning at the university. The study was qualitatively conducted as a case study. The subjects were 16 undergraduate students of the seventh semester in a university. The data were obtained by conducting interviews and disseminating a questionnaire. The results of the study revealed that most participants demonstrated positive views towards the use of e-portfolio. Further, the participants acknowledged some crucial benefits of utilizing the e-portfolio. They were extended to; increasing the motivational beliefs and self-efficacy, learning new things, accomplishing the English tasks effectively, giving beneficial effects for the learning, and improving students' ability in English. The findings are expected to bring light to stakeholders to consider the use of e-portfolio to encourage students' learning enthusiasm and engagement.

Abstract

LMS Moodle has been the primary online-mediated Teaching in Higher Education in the pandemic era. The unexpected pedagogical struggled to adapt conventional class to the virtual class, particularly English teaching. Various investigations have been conducted to examine and describe the perception and challenges lecturers face in eLearning. On the contrary, the lecturers need to the presentable course in Moodle for their students. The purpose of the study investigates the lecturer's perception and the challenge of utilization in Moodle-based English teaching. A descriptive qualitative design was applied to the study. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were obtained from 54 lecturers to collect the data. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) concentrates on divining and evaluating lecturers' fundamental pre-acceptance of LMS Moodle. Close-ended questions practiced receiving the population of the analyzed topics. While open-ended questions were applied to gain the lecturers' perception of Moodle-based implementation topics. Subsequently, the finding of the result is to enhance the perspective and solve the challenges in teaching English Moodle-based.

Abstract

The true challenge in academic setting is how to transform values and guide students’ mind growth with no excessive words. Thus, edusemiotics plays vital role and becomes a dominant in teaching and learning communication. Edusemiotics represents a new conceptual framework of theoretical study and the empirical one. This study aims at exploring how English Education Department students of 2017 A class STKIP PGRI Jombang elaborate ideas in interpreting signs on the picture to reflect their critical thinking ability. The data were taken from 10 students based on convenient sampling. This research performed qualitative method with a case study as research approach. Those students were in Extensive Reading class and asked to freely interpret the picture in accordance with their background of knowledge. There are three important findings; (1) students’ chosen picture, (2) students’ reading habit and personal experiences regarding with extensive reading, and (3) students’ critical thinking measurement and level. The result shows that 7 of students’ critical thinking level are in developing level while the 3 of students are in mastering level. Most of them basically have the reading habit before getting Extensive Reading program and it increases afterwards. The critical thinking ability is shown from how they elaborate ideas in interpreting sequence of signs on the picture and how they understand the values within.
