Abstract

Schools in Indonesia are supposed to carry out mathematical learning well. However, in reality, mathematics learning process is, in many ways, simply delivering information without involving students to be able to build their own understanding and knowledge. Based on the observation, during the mathematics learning activities it was found that some students paid less attention, disturbed friends, did not do tasks, and did not focus on the learning processes. This study aims to improve students’ attitudes towards learning mathematics by applying the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) cooperative learning method with a scientific approach. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted collaboratively and carried out in class VIII A one of junior high school in Depok, Sleman, Yogyakarta which consists of 21 male and 15 female students. The procedure is in the form of cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages namely: planning, implementation, action, observation, and reflection. The techniques of collecting data were observation, notes, field notes, documentation, non-test instruments (attitude questionnaire), and tests. The results showed that students' attitudes toward mathematics increased. The final results of the questionnaire on students' attitudes toward mathematics showed a good category (77.78%) with an average score of 110.44. Then, for mathematics learning outcomes, students got an average score of 72.22. The number of students who were scored above 75 increased to 63.89%.

Abstract

For Mathematics Education Study Program, Mathematics of Economics is a subject where Mathematics is applied in Economics. In this course, mathematical concepts and theories which have been studied in the previous semesters have to be applied in Economics that is new for the students. For this kind of subject, the lecturer has to be more creative in the class so that the lesson will be more interesting and understandable. The aim of this research is to know the improvement of learning motivation in Mathematics of Economics through the use of multimedia development using Visual Basic for Application (VBA) in the class. This multimedia is presented in the form of a game in Microsoft PowerPoint (PPt) program. Respondents of this study were 34 students of class A in the fourth semester of Mathematics Education study program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at Universitas Islam Malang who were taking this course. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques using observation and interview techniques. The observation sheet and the interview guidelines used here are arranged based on indicators measuring learning motivation. The result shows that the use of multimedia development with VBA can improve the students’ learning motivation to study Mathematics of Economics. The recalling of mathematical concepts and theories which have been studied before can be more interesting in the form of a game, while the new Economics concepts and theories with the mathematical application inside can be understood easily in the form of competition that enhances the motivation.

Abstract

This research aims to resolve the heteroscedasticity problem in time series data by modeling and analyzing volatility the gold return using GARCH models. Heteroscedasticity means not the constant variance of residuals. The sample data is a return data from January 1, 2014 to September 23, 2016. The data analysis technique used is a stationary test, model identification, model estimation, diagnostic check, heteroscedasticity test, GARCH model estimation, and evaluation. The results showed that ARIMA (3,0,3)-GARCH (1.1) is the best model.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning (PBL) assisted by QR code on students’ mathematical problem solving ability. This experimental research was carried out on students of the Elementary School Teacher Education Study ProgramUniversitas Muria Kudus in the mathematical concept course in the academic year of 2016/2017. The ability to solve mathematical problems is measured by tests. Data analysis techniques used include t-test and proportion test. The results of this study are: 1) the mathematical problem solving ability of students who learn through PBL assisted by QR code is better than the mathematical problem solving ability of students who learn through Direct Instruction learning; 2) the mathematical problem solving ability of students who are taught with PBL assisted by QR code have reached the minimum completeness criteria (MCC) and 3) the proportion of students taught with PBL assisted by QR code that has reached the MCC is better than the proportion of students studying through Direct Instruction learning that have met the minimum completeness criteria (MCC). Thus, the lecturer can develop PBL assisted by QR code to create interesting learning so that students are enthusiastic about the learning, which will have a positive effect on their mathematical problem solving ability.

Abstract

The results of the PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) survey in 2012-2015 on the achievement of mathematical competencies of Indonesian students showed a significant increase, but the overall achievement was still below the average of the countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Furthermore, the results of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) report showed that many students like and feel good about mathematics, but their confidence in their mathematical abilities was quite low. Many studies reveal the close association of Mathematics Self-Efficacy (MSE) with the performance/achievement of students' mathematical competencies. In 2015, the PISA survey was done using computerization except in 15 countries, one of them was in Indonesia. Therefore, the results of this study are to produce the first computer-based MSE scale developed in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Hill Cipher cryptosystem is a symmetry key cryptosystem. This cryptosystem uses the concept of integer over modulo p. This cryptosystem uses a matrix K as a secret key. We must choose the key matrix K which has an inverse in modulo p. This secret key matrix will be used by the sender and recipient of the message to encrypt and descript the message. For this reason, this paper will discuss the generalization of Hill Cipher using matrices over complex numbers. Calculation of determinants and inverses of the matrix K will adopt a system of determinant and inverse calculations on Hill Cipher. The results show that the proposed cryptosystem scrambles the plaintext.

Abstract

The present study aims to describe the effectiveness of culture-based contextual mathematics learning media by considering students’ prior knowledge. This is a quasi-experimental study that employed pretest-postest non-equivalent group design. Eight graders of a Junior High School (JHS) in Yogyakarta were involved as experimental and control groups.  The data were obtained through a test to find out the students' mathematics learning achievements, while the data analysis technique used is the analysis of two-way variance with unequal cells. The results indicate that by considering the students’ previous knowledge, the culture-based contextual mathematics learning media is more effective than the conventional ones.
