Abstract

This article provides a rich social history of the Minangkabau of West Sumatra by tracing the patterns of continuity and change that have characterized modern Minangkabau history, stretching from the end of the Padri rebellion into the twilight years of Dutch colonial rule in West Sumatra. His primary interest, however, lies largely in broader social changes, in education, gender relations and home life for the Minangkabau. With great nuance and depth, Hadler shows how the Minangkabau “matriarchate” responded creatively to change and to the forces of capitalism and modernity by questioning elemental cultural definitions and, as a result, producing some of the country’s leading nationalist intellectuals and activists. Abstract

This study aims to determine the increase in activity of students in the learning process of citizenship education by using the discovery method in classroom X2 SMAN 2 Lengayang, the District of Pesisir Selatan. The Class Action Research approach was used in this research. The subjects of this research were students of class X2 SMAN 2 Lengayang Pesisir Selatan District in the first semester of the school year 2012/2013. Data in this research were collected through observation and interview. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The findings of this study indicate that the application of the method of discovery in the citizenship education can increase the learning activity of students in the class X2 SMAN 2 Lengayang, the District of Pesisir Selatan. Abstract

ABSTRACT Identification of the problem of UMKM is divided into two groups: internal problems which include issues of organizational structure, organizational strategy, and competition and external group problems that include broad market issues, problems of input and output factor conditions supporting institutional and industrial problems. This research concluded that the internal problems of UMKM in Bukittinggi is the lower level of owner education and the UMKM management is still indicated traditional, while the external problems are the limitation of market share and access to financial institutions that are still difficult. Abstract

This essay provides a preliminary analysis of the Mohammad Syafe’i’s educational thought, placing it within the context of the larger social and intellectual history of Indonesian society during the colonial time and after. The idea behind the establishment of the INS – the school founded by Sjafei in 1920s – justified and idealized  national education as  the form of intellectual resistance against the Dutch colonial regime on the basis of historical precedence found in Western educational expansion. This study traces (i) how did Sjafei develop his own philosophy of education? (ii) how did he redefine knowledge, education, schooling, teaching and learning? (iii) how did he challenge and change traditional concepts of education and curriculum as content of the whole learning processes? (iv) what the ideas or practices of the Syafei’s school contribution are present in today’s teaching and learning? (v) what contributions from his achievements are useful to the Indonesian national education in developing the country’s philosophy of education? In answering these questions, this article eventually comes to conclusion that in one way or another, one could qualify him as a pioneer of modern Indonesian education. Abstract

This study is motivated by the phenomenon of the decline of professionalism of North Padang high school teacher. This study aims to determine the contribution of transactional leadership principals and achievement motivation of teachers on high school teachers professionalism in the district of North Padang. This study classified to quantitative study. The population in this study are all high school teachers in North Padang, amounting to 202 people. Of the entire population sample of 135 people was set in stratified proportional random sampling. Data collection instrument was a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using statistical analysis with SPSS version 17.00. The results showed that: (1) Transactional leadership principals contributed significantly on the professionalism of a high school teacher in North Padang at 46.60%; (2) Achievement motivation contributed significantly on the professionalism of a high school teacher in North Padang at 38.30%, and (3) Transactional leadership and achievement motivation principals together contributed significantly towards high school teacher professionalism in Padang Utara by 58%. Abstract

ABSTRACT This essay is merely an initial notion talking about the possibility of the present and the rise of a movement of the Malay economic organization in the regional level which based on the common history and their cultural traits. The main problems faced by the Malay World are, of course, dilemmatic and complicated as well, not only the existing tension between society and the state on the one side but also between society and the global economic powers on the other. However, the effort toward these movements is possible, even needs to supported, either academically or creativelly. Abstract

Early childhood education (PAUD) is an educational and nurturing effort directed to children from birth to 6 years of age and aims to provide educational stimulus to help the growth and development of spiritual, physical and physical abilities, cognitive, affective, emotional, moral and religious abilities Optimally so that children can meet the needs of further education in a conducive, democratic and competitive education environment. This study focuses on interpersonal communication that occurs between teachers and children in the process of learning using the theory of 7 characteristics of interpersonal communication according to Reardon (1987), Effendy (1986), Peter and Samovar (1982). The results showed that in interpersonal communication, especially interpersonal communication that occurs between mentors with children in the learning process is often experiencing barriers among which researchers observe is the existence of psychological disorders in children is bored, sometimes the mood is not stabilized. While on the ecological disturbance, the atmosphere of the classroom is often noisy. In addition, the success of learning should be supported by instructional components consisting of messages in the form of learning materials, messenger, and background or situation conducive to the learning process.Keywords: Communication model, mentor, learning process, early children

Abstract

There had been some significant improvements made in the process of political communication during Pilkada (governor election) 2005 in West Sumatera. The fluency of political communication process was influenced by the independency of news paper including Harian Umum Singgalang as one  medium  to convey ideas, statement, and political messages given by the Pilkada’s candidate (cagub/cawagub). The independency of news paper was determined through its “Tajuk Rencana”. In the “Tajuk Rencana”, the editor was free to convey the ideas and thoughts without being influenced by any other parties, especially by the canditates. The news paper roled neutral by clearly extending the society perspective related to the problems occured in the Pilkada. Therefore, the news paper had roled as a political communication medium which acted independently to succeed the process of democracy in the Pilkada of 2005 in West Sumatera. Abstract

This article raised issues related to anthropological views in the character building of the community. The authors look at the concept of scientific and socio-anthropological approach in building the character of the community as well as the approach of behaviorism, interactionism, and construction. In this paper the authors also described how the construction of the human characters in the study based on the anthropology and cross-cultural studies. Interestingly, this article attempts to discuss the dialectic model of role of science in building the character by using three approaches, namely behaviorism, interactionism, and construction, so as to provide answers about the position of science in the normative and academic levels in the character building.Keywords:  character, character building, anthropological perspective

Abstract

Community participation in public service began in the preparation of service standards to the evaluation and award. Community participation can be embodied in the form of cooperation, fulfillment of rights and obligations of the community, and participation in policy making and shaping public services watchdog. Community participation is an important part of the public service system. Thus the conventional service management that ignores the process of community involvement in public service cannot be maintained anymore.
