Abstract

Mechanical students need material in English subject that relevant with their department. However, most of the teachersused the materials that are general English to teach English in the mechanical department. Thus, in this research the writer did it toknow the students’ need. In this research, the samples are the students in the mechanical metal department. There are two classeswhich are 45 students. The writer took 15 students through technique sampling is sample random sampling. The instrument thatwriter used to take the data is questionnaires through open – ended questions. The students need in learning English can be seen inthree aspects: necessities, lacks, and wants. The first aspect is necessity, the finding is the students need English materials that are easyto be understood by them. They need the words of the text which are simple and easy to be understood. The second aspect is lack thatthe students’ lacks are they have fewer vocabularies, so they are difficult to understand the texts. The last aspect is wants; they wantto have fluency in speaking so they need to have more activities in speaking skill. Otherwise, the teacher rarely gave speaking skill inteaching and learning process. Thus, the teachers need to know what are the students need to be learned in their departments.

Abstract

This article discusses several issues raised in TESOL field range from the variety of English to the technology application in language teaching. The term of English as an International Language, or EIL has been growing in TESOL field. And then, the issue about teaching focus is still fresh to discuss. The variety of cultures using English has stirred the language teaching to focus on the language use instead of the language form. Finally, technology implication such as online learning in TESOL classrooms is now increasing. To sum up, the issues link much with the importance of intercultural competence in second language teaching; therefore, some adaptations to the ELT teaching method in EFL context such as in Indonesia need to be adopted.

Abstract

The study aims at describing the equivalence and shift occuring in translating noun phrases. Library research was applied to this study. The data were taken from two bilingual picture books entitled Princess Mui Zee written by Firma Sutan, Princess Barruna written by Shinta Handini and their translation into Indonesian by Asih Gandana as the translator. The result of the study shows that the meaning equivalence often occurs in formal correspondence. Then, the study also finds the structure shift existed in 15 NPs of both stories; the class shift occured in 3 NPs of both series; the unit shift happened in 1 NP of both series and the intra-system shift occured in 2 NPs.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to see the moral values aspect in child comics by conducting sociology literature. It uses the qualitative method with the data sources are used by 10 comic Naruto. The results of this research are positive aspects of moral value, such as (1) life passion, (2) courage, (3) affection, (4) solidarity, (5) sacrifice, (6) love the homeland.

Abstract

This article discusses two representative poems by a famous African-American writer, Claude Mckay. It seeks to interpretthe poems, “If We Must Die” and “Enslaved”, which both explore the issues racism and mental slavery, in the light of politicalapproaches such as Marxist criticism and postcolonialism. The main findings of this article are: 1) that racism and violence that itentails are rooted in class conflict and 2) that McKay’s poems can be seen as a counter-hegemony of the ethnocentricity of whiteculture. Generally, it is hoped that this writing can promote historical and political readings of minority poets like Claude McKay.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang strategi penolakan yang digunakan oleh para penjual barang di Pasar raya Padang.Penelitian ini lebih difokuskan pada ujaran-ujaran direktif yang terjadi antara pembeli dan penjual. Teori yang digunakan adalah teoriliteral and non literal dan teori langsung dan tidak langsung dari Searle (1986), teori maksim kesopanan dari Wijana (1996), dan teori tipe-tipe kalimat oleh Sinclair and Couldhard (1981). Metode penelitan adalah metode observasi dengan teknik perekaman danpencatatan.`Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 15 cara penjual dalam menunjukkan suatu penolakan, seperti bercanda, ujaranliteral atau non literal dan sebagainya. Dari segi maksim kesopanan, bentuk ujaran-ujaran yang terjadi banyak dalam bentuk tidak sopan.Hal ini disebabkan karena penjual ingin pembeli membeli langsung barang dagangan tanpa ada tawar menawar. Penjual lebih banyakmenggunakan ujaran kesopanan pada penawaran pertama. Dari segi tipe kalimat, penjual lebih banyak menggunakan tipe deklaratifdalam menjualkan barang dagangannya.

Semiotic explains about meanings and signs. The meanings and signs itself are the two things that are growing and developing from the human’s concept of the universe as a way in defining the life. Comprehending the meaning and sign by Pierce, Barthes, Umberto Eco, or even Piliang concepts will view that those meanings and signs can be interpretated as a life reality which are exist in every relationship of human and God and also human and the nature.

Abstract

This research is designed in the form of research and development (R & D). It aims to develop an English Textbook for Junior High School students based on Social - Cultural of Ngada Flores. The Textbook is designed to include the cultural scope of Ngada Flores in the teaching materials. The subject matter is theme-based, in which each unit consists of themes drawn from the culturalcoverageofNgadaFlores. The learning model used in this development is the Dick & Carey model, this model has ten strategic steps that is; (1) identify the general objectives of the learning, (2) carry out the learning analysis (3) identify the input behavior and characteristics of the students (4) formulate the objectives of the work (5) develop the benchmark   reference materials (6) develop the learning strategy (7) and selecting learning materials (8) designing and executing formative evaluations (9) revising learning materials and (10) designing and executing summative evaluations. The result of study, in general, the comments and suggestions from the content experts stated that the development product of socio cultural-based English textbook provided with pictures and illustration was sufficient, taking it from the correctness, comprehensiveness, and accuracy aspects. The explanation on the learning content was self-explanatory, adequate disclosure and congruent, and significance to the characteristics of SMP students. The students’ assessment and comments described that they were interested and appreciated this textbook development product due to its representative content description, organized, relevance with the local culture, using simple and familiar language with attractive pictures that enhanced their motivation and curiousity in learning individually or in group.

Abstract

Dalam proses belajar mengajar, pendidik dalam hal ini dosen membutuhkan media pengajaran. Salah satu  media pengajaran  yang tebaru adalah buku elektronik ( E-book). E-book berupa CD yang berisikan materi / bahan belajaran, tugas-tugas yangdisusun oleh  dosen terkait mata kuliah yang bersangkutan.  E-book  dapat dipergunakan di dalam kelas ataupun dipergunakan sendiroleh mahas iswa di rumah ataupun di rental komputer. E-book dipergunakan untuk pertama kalinya di jurusan Bhasa Inggris STKIPPGRI Sumatera Barat pada mata pelajaran Cross Cultural Undersatanding (CCU). Penelitian ini adalah penelitian descriptive. Sampedari penelitian ini adalah Mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris tingkat II  lokal G yang mengambil mata kulaih CCU.  Dari penelitian indidapat bahwa mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam menggunakan E-book karena tidak tersedianya laboratorium computer yang dilengkapi internet di jurusan Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu masih banyaknya mahasiswa yang belum mengetahi cara menggoperasikan computer dan internet.

Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate the effect of think pair square and think pair share strategy on students’ speakingskill of describing things viewed from students’ motivation. This research employed 2 x 2 factorial design and involved the studentsof SMK YPM Zain Pauh Kambar, Padang Pariaman. The samples were chosen by using purposive sampling. The data were gainedthrough speaking test and analysed by using appropriate quantitative methods. The result of the research showed that think pairsquare and think pair share strategy were able to improve students’ speaking skill. There was an interaction between teachingstrategy and students’ motivation of speaking skill. Hence, it can be concluded that these two strategies can be used as alternativestrategies to enhance students’ speaking skill, and that they can enrich students’ experience to do other cooperative learningstrategies.
