Abstract

The ablution place has an important role in the life of Muslims. Wudu space not only serves as a place to prepare for worship, but also as a manifestation of one of the Islamic values, namely sustainability. Therefore, it becomes important to understand how the ergonomic use of space in the design of the ablution place of the Islamic Center Mosque of Lhokseumawe City as the locus of this observation. The main objective of this study is to analyze the physical-internal factors that influence the design of wudu stations based on the perspective of space ergonomics theory so that wudu stations can be used sustainably. This research uses descriptive-analytical method with qualitative data processing. The results found in the case study are that there are several typologies of wudu spaces that affect user comfort in terms of ergonomics. In addition, the redundancy of water and circulation corridor spaces is a challenge for the sustainability of wudu places. This paper is expected to make a positive contribution to the guidelines for sustainable wudu spaces, as well as provide direction for architects, designers, and developers in creating ergonomic wudu spaces that combine Islamic architecture values with strong sustainability principles.

Abstract

Wisma Kilang Balikpapan remains the only surviving example of Jengki Architecture in Balikpapan City. This building stands as a silent witness to the city's dynamic development, evolving through the passage of time. It once flourished in the past, representing the diversity of architectural styles and unique designs that contributed to the modernization trends in Indonesia. However, this architectural style is nearing extinction due to modernization, marked by major renovations by the building's owners. This extinction poses a clear threat, with the possibility of the style gradually disappearing over time. This study aims to comprehensively and deeply identify and analyze the facade of Wisma Kilang Balikpapan, particularly focusing on the openings (doors, windows, and ventilation) as part of jengki architecture. It also examines the consistency and changes, both macro and micro, in the current facade as it interacts with changes in function, social and cultural contexts, and the surrounding environment. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a rationalistic paradigm to gather data and information about about the existing conditions of the building's openings in Wisma Kilang Balikpapan. The primary focus is on 6 units of the Wisma, with the identified elements including doors, windows, and ventilation. The study finds a variety of door, window, and ventilation types in Wisma Kilang Balikpapan, some of which remain intact, while others have changed. The facade's doors and ventilation tend to remain consistent, whereas windows have experienced significant alterations due to renovations and changes in building function. These findings can serve as a basis for building preservation policies and as a reference for future facade restoration efforts.

Abstract

This research examines post-pandemic strategies for designing traditional market buildings in Indonesia to accommodate the needs of older adult. The pandemic has impacted their physical and mental vulnerabilities, necessitating increased inclusive design standards. Previous research has not captured the importance of older adult preferences for post-pandemic design strategies, especially in local market buildings in Java. This research aims to provide an overview of how traditional market building designs can accommodate their preferences. This research used mixed methods, starting with a survey of 121 respondents aged 50 years and over, followed by in-depth interviews with 20 participants. Quantitative data highlights design gaps, such as a lack of greenery, inadequate parking and circulation space, and limited senior-friendly features, such as non-slip floors, seating, and ramps. The interview further detailed the older adult's needs and preferences, such as material selection, seating distribution, minimizing stairs, adding ramps and handrails, and circulation. The findings show that the current design is not sufficient to meet post-pandemic and older adult’s needs. The provision of building interior cleanliness meets minimum standards, but inclusivity is still neglected, with more than 83% of respondents stating that the design is not responsive to them. Moreover, participants emphasized the importance of reorganizing the spatial layout, including widening paths, seating for resting (or waiting), and zoning for certain commodities. The research contribution is to provide recommendations for post-pandemic traditional market designs that are responsive to the needs of the older adult. Findings advocate for traditional market spaces that are resilient and inclusive, prioritizing health and community.
