Abstract

Abstract

Historical areas that support tourism activities will always adapt to match the complexity of tourism needs in the last few decades. The uniqueness of Kotagede is that there are traditional settlements of silver craftsmen's (Javanese: Abdi Dalem Kriya). The history of silver craftsmen's settlement has been formed since the Dutch colonial era and has survived until now as a characteristic of Kotagede. Silver craftsmen in Kotagede have a dilemma to survive for SMEs home-based or adapt to sell products to a larger scale industry. The research objectives are to determine whether or not there is a change in the settlement function caused by the silver home-based industry activities and to what extent the change has occurred. The method used is a quantitative method with a positivistic paradigm and uses descriptive analysis for data interpretation. Statistical data analysis used multivariate linear regression (SPSS V26). In this study, it was found that there was an effect of Silver home-based Industry Activities on change in residential space function with the low significance of 25.6 % while 74.4 % was thought to be influenced by other activities outside the research model. Partially, the highest variable effect on settlement changes is production activities that can be found in Purbayan and Prenggan Village. With the low significant impact results on settlement changes, It is hoped that the silver production activities (home-based industry) have the potential to be promoted as part of the survivability concept of tourism in Kotagede by advancing SMEs itself.

Abstract

In recent years, Urban population density spreads towards suburbs of the metropolitan city as the impact of urbanisation. In Indonesia, Commuting activity does not only occur in the centre of metropolitan city Jakarta but spreads outside to the suburbs such as in Tangerang City. Commuting activities often cause stress, and some outdoor public spaces are expected to be healing space for recreation needs amidst a busy life. The lack of integration of urban design that supports commuting activities along with leisure activities is a problem that will be raised. This paper aims to evaluate the configuration of a potential location as the third space in Tangerang City infrastructure around bus stops and train station. Methods used are qualitative methods with a rationalistic approach. The research findings postulated three paradigms in Tactical Urbanism design strategy, which are: (1) Functionally, Tactical Urbanism can form a multipurpose proximity network that functions simultaneously between mobility and relaxation activities; (2) Socially, tactical urbanism design strategy can eliminate social segregation where there are no gaps to spend leisure time around Tangerang station for commuter, community, also tourist; (3) Visually, Tactical Urbanism can encourage people to come and sit for a while and become an icon of Tangerang City with the design of public open spaces integrated with infrastructure for transportation. Based on the above findings, a framework is conceptualised as an attempt to strengthen the tactical urbanism design strategy in the suburbs area.

Abstract

Yogyakarta is a city with high urban development and rapid urbanisation stream. Those phenomena affected the dwelling process in urban-rural settlement in Kotagede heritage area. Previously Kotagede is old capitol city of Mataram with Keraton characters and organic traditional settlement. However recent developments showed transformation in Kotagede open public space. Some factors such internal and external might be involved in the transformation. This study aimed brief explanations about open space pattern in heritage area of Kotagede Yogyakarta using qualitative and quantitative methods in demand. The research object is the public open space in Kotagede. The methods are quantitative and qualitative in demands with deductive analysis in rationalistic frame. The Deductive used in analyzing the identification results with the several theories to explain the phenomenon. The quantitative method will be used to simplify the initial procedure of transformation factors. The qualitative method will be used to enhance the factors power and relate with the pattern changes. The results showed that internal and external factors bring impact to the open space pattern in Kotagede and the patterns of open space were transformed in demands. The findings give warning to the further development of Kotagede settlements

Abstract

Funeral services are part of public facilities with deep meaning for the mourners to ‘say goodbye’. In Indonesia, funeral services are regulated in Spatial and Regional Planning that adapts to the local context and culture. However, the development of funeral services encountered various obstacles in the availability of adequate facilities and have ‘less-meaning’ in small towns. The death of a loved one causes psychological distress for the family and those left behind. This problem underlies study related to the meaning of profane-sacred values in funeral services. The method used is a qualitative study with a storytelling approach through observations at funeral homes and crematoriums in Yogyakarta and Solo, Indonesia. This study shows that the profane zones of funeral services can manifest in flexibility, continuity of space, relief of spatial dimensions, and clarity of circulation. The 'chaotic' phases of mourning can be neutralised with monochrome colours to create an atmosphere of consolation. Meanwhile, sacred zones can be applied rigid, angular, and centred as a form of honour. Landscape interventions may aim to neutralise a grief situation and potentially be an aspect of natural healing. Moreover, landscape planning around the main building can address sustainability and environmental balance. The results of this study are expected to provide a discourse that funeral buildings are not only seen as 'a space of activity', but beyond that, it has a significant role in healing aspects in bereavement conditions.

Abstract

The existence of temple buildings in Indonesia is part of the acculturation of Chinese culture that develops time by time. The temple, which is functionally used as a place of worship, has a unique role in historical developments in Indonesia, especially in Bandung. Satya Budhi Temple is one of the temple buildings in Bandung, which is more than 50 years old and is the oldest temple in this city. This building is part of the cultural heritage of Bandung, whose sustainability should be studied in terms of architecture. This research seeks to dig deeper into how the temple building's layout, circulation flow, and ornaments manifest the values of the Chinese philosophy of life, society, and culture. The research method uses a qualitative descriptive method accompanied by sketches of the elements forming space and circulation. The findings in this study show that the architecture of the temple has a distinctive spatial layout accompanied by a linear circulation which represents the journey towards the profane-sacred transition of humans towards God. From the findings of this study, it is hoped that cultural heritage buildings with a typology of worship places can continue to be preserved through preservation and revitalization efforts so that their historical value is well maintained. Keywords: Layout, Circulation flow, Ornament, Temple building, Cultural heritage building

Abstract

The development of cities in Indonesia must be connected to the role of the Dutch colonial government. Cities were built from an indigenous village by creating a grid pattern to divide the village into residential blocks with the traditional market as the center. The Chinese, as immigrants, had no choice of work other than being traders. Currently, in Pasar Baru, the first commercial area in Bandung, Chinese-style shophouses are still recognizable, and some have been designated cultural heritage buildings. Unfortunately, some more are no longer intact, split into several units, or transformed into other shophouses. This study aims to show how Chinese society has continued to trade as tradition and how the shophouse as a legacy has adapted. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative using several case studies. From survey observations, it can be seen that the transformation of shophouses begins with the division of shophouses in a transverse direction so that each unit still has road access to continue the trading tradition. The success of the descendant's continued tradition has made Pasar Baru the most prominent trading center in Bandung and serves other cities around Bandung.

Abstract

Optimal architectural studio conditions and standardized room arrangements can make students feel comfortable. The comfort factor is essential to receive learning material effectively without 'negative' distractions from the space itself. The room indicators that can affect effective learning are the choice of color, atmosphere, and furniture arrangement. This study aims to see how the choice of color, atmosphere, and furniture arrangement can affect learning effectiveness in studio-based classrooms. The method used is a quantitative method with in-depth data interpretation qualitatively. The study's results found several things in the selection of colors, ventilation, lighting, and layout furniture arrangement in the studio-based classroom that needed to meet the standards and received negative responses from the student's perspective regarding learning effectiveness. The results of the research findings are expected to be input and suggestions in designing studio-based classrooms, especially in architecture learning.
