Abstract

This study examined the correlation among reading motivation, reading anxiety, and reading comprehension of tenth-grade students in Palembang. A quantitative correlational research design was employed, involving 509 students from SMA Bina Warga 1 Palembang and SMA Negeri 15 Palembang. Using cluster random sampling, 107 students were selected as the sample. Data were collected through a reading comprehension test and two questionnaires measuring reading motivation and reading anxiety. The findings indicated no significant correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension (r = 0.087, p = 0.375), indicating that motivation to read did not influence students’ understanding of texts. Likewise, no notable correlation was identified between reading anxiety and reading comprehension (r = -0.022, p = 0.824), suggesting that anxiety was not a determining factor. These results revealed that reading motivation and reading anxiety did not have a substantial effect on reading comprehension. This suggests that psychological factors such as motivation and anxiety alone may not serve a decisive role in shaping reading comprehension. Instead, other factors such as teaching methods, students’ backgrounds, individual skills, and the learning environment may contribute to reading comprehension outcomes. The study offers insights for English teachers in designing reading instruction that considers multiple influencing factors. It may also guide future researchers in exploring additional variables affecting reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning difficulties of Yogyakarta Administrative Management Academy students in acquiring English language skills. The survey targeted 205 students enrolled in the even semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. Qualitative description was used in data analysis. From the results of this study, two factors of difficulty were found, namely internal and external. The causes of students' learning difficulties from internal factors such as low level of intelligence, low aptitude in English subjects, lack of interest in learning, and low motivation to learn. Students attend only out of obligation and to get good grades and complete assignments, not to learn English as an international language that is so important today. The external factors that affect students who have difficulty learning English include a lack of support for the use of English at home or in the community, as well as limited opportunities to use English outside the classroom. Keywords: learning difficulties, competence, English language

Abstract

English for Tourism in tourism education institutions should equip students with English skills relevant to their academic and workplace settings. In Central Kalimantan, the tourism students must also have the knowledge of local tourism. Unfortunately, no English for Tourism book currently includes relevant local content. To address this gap, a needs analysis was conducted to explore the necessary language skills, topics, and local content to be incorporated into English for Tourism materials for these students. This research employed both quantitative and qualitative methods, utilizing a questionnaire and a focused-group interview. This research has shown a number of findings. It was revealed that the students prioritize speaking, listening and vocabulary, followed by other skills and components. They also need the materials that cover a range of topics, including general and local tourism content. Tour guiding, describing tourist spots, and tourism-related jobs were among the preferred essential topics. Last, the local content should encompass historical and cultural sites, natural tourism spots in Central Kalimantan, Dayak cultural and arts performances, Dayak traditions, as well as animal conservation and ecotourism. Tailoring local content into English for Tourism materials will better facilitate the students improving their English competence ready to fit the actual demand of the tourism sector in Central Kalimantan.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between students’ mastery of past tense and their ability to write about past experiences. A total of 40 eleventh-grade students participated in the research. Data were collected through two written assessments: a grammar test focusing on past tense usage and a writing task that required students to retell a story using appropriate tenses. The grammar test included multiple-choice questions and sentence transformation items, while the writing task offered four topics from which students chose one. The results of the grammar test revealed a mean score of 4.3, which falls into the “Poor” category. This indicates that students generally struggle with understanding and applying past tense forms correctly. On the other hand, the writing assessment showed a mean score of 6.9, classified as “Fairly Good.” This suggests that, despite limited grammar mastery, students were moderately successful in expressing ideas about past events in written form. To determine the strength of the correlation between the two variables, the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient was applied. The analysis resulted in an r-value of 0.497, indicating a moderate positive correlation between past tense mastery and writing performance. These findings highlight the importance of integrating targeted grammar instruction with writing practice to enhance students’ overall writing proficiency, particularly in expressing past experiences.

Abstract

This study explores gender representation in Madurese folktales using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). By analyzing two selected folktales, The Origin of the Madurese People and Menak Sanaya, the research examines textual, discursive, and sociocultural dimensions to understand how gender roles are portrayed and their implications on societal perceptions. The findings reveal a recurring pattern of patriarchal ideologies where male characters are depicted as dominant, protective, and decision-makers. In contrast, female characters are relegated to subordinate roles, often portrayed as passive and reliant on male intervention. These representations reflect traditional Madurese societal values and contribute to the reinforcement of gender hierarchies. The study highlights how narratives serve as tools for intergenerational transmission of cultural norms, shaping collective consciousness and perpetuating gender stereotypes. Insights from this research emphasize the need for critical engagement with cultural narratives to foster discussions on gender equality.

Abstract

This study focuses on assessment of the benefits and challenges of digital braille assistive devices in relation to their relevance in promoting inclusivity of learners with visual impairment (VI) in special and integrated education. The study was guided by universal design for learning and assistive technology theories. The study adopted a descriptive survey design within a mixed methodology approach. The study was restricted within 2 institutions in Kenya: a private University (mainstream) and a special school for the blind. The two key study objectives were to assess the benefits of digital assistive devices for the learners with VI in relation to promoting inclusivity in education. Secondly, the study examined the challenges learners face in using these devices in special and mainstream education. The findings show that using digital braille assistive devices for visually impaired learners offer significant benefits. The key benefits include promoting educational access, learner’s independence and enhancing learning opportunities. However, several barriers remain inadequately addressed. Barriers include adequate device access, device maintenance/repair delays, limited training, and inadequate support systems. The study underscores the importance of increasing device availability, improving maintenance and support, and adequate training for both learners and educators. Despite the challenges, the devices' potential to improve inclusivity and foster independence is evident. The study recommends that the government should develop and implement a national policy that ensures adequate availability of digital braille assistive devices. Schools should establish robust policy and support systems for use of assistive technologies, and regular training for both students and educators.
