Abstract

The change of social interaction pattern amidst the implementation of social distancing policies during the pandemic had altered the way individuals evaluated themselves and their social environment, including the way they develop perceived social support (PSS) that would lead to another change in the way they develop their satisfaction with life (SWL). This might have affected the development of their psychological wellbeing (PWB), which is highly contingent upon psychosocial constructs. Another variable that might alter the formation of PWB is the sense that we matter to others (Mattering), which was also altered by the limitation of in-person interactions. We purposively recruited 403 Malaysian urban adults affected by the social distancing policies by having to study or work from home, to respond to our survey in order to test the hypothesis that the SWL would fully mediate the association between PSS and PWB among individuals with higher levels of mattering. The results of the bootstrap analysis with 5,000 samples and 95% confident interval supported our hypothesis, with a caveat that the mediation of SWL also occurred among individuals with moderate levels of mattering. PSS was still a significant predictor of PWB when controlling for mattering and SWL, which indicated that the mediation of SWL was only partially occurred.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines were launched after granting them ‘emergency use authorization’ approval. Beyond the clinical trial, there was very limited data on the side effects following vaccination This is a longitudinal study among health care workers (HCWs) in a tertiary care hospital. Information was also collected using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire which included their demographic details, first dose and second dose. Post-vaccination follow-up was done at the centre which was then followed up by telephonic monitoring after 48 hours. In the present study 1,034 (65.6%) health care workers (HCWs) did not report any serious reactions/symptoms. Pain and tenderness were the most commonly reported side-effects in more than half. The severity of the symptoms following the second dose of vaccine was compared with the first dose and it was found that the majority 653 (41.4%) had reported no symptoms/reactions following both doses of vaccine. Every vaccine will have some side effects but it is important to understand that in the ongoing pandemic, vaccines are our “best shot” to fight against this virus.

Abstract

This research was aimed to capture the practice of foodservice management and food acceptance for change unbalance dietary intake children in a fullday Elementary School. School meal food service management is a program for students to improve the nutrition intake An observation form, along with an in-depth interview was used to explore food production practice. Quantitative data on food satisfaction as well as food waste was also measured. Observation in food service management explained that low food acceptance was mainly found in vegetable products. The food quality, especially in taste and texture, became the determinant of the high vegetable food waste. Improving food service management production procedures, including menu planning and evaluation, procurement, preparation, and cooking, could be a promising strategy to increase food acceptance and to reduce food waste.

Abstract

The study aims to assess the readiness of health facilities to provide diagnosis and treatment for three specific non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, CVD and CRD related services in Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study used data from the 2017 Bangladesh Health Facility Survey. A total of 406 health facilities providing all three services were considered for this study. The findings of the study illustrated that there were rural-urban disparities in health facilities to provide diabetics, CVD, CRD related services. Diabetics and CRD related services were significantly higher in public health facilities of urban areas compared to rural areas (P <0.008 and P<0.001, respectively). Also, public health facilities of urban areas were more likely to provide CVD related services compared to rural areas. While private health facilities of urban areas were more likely to provide CVD, CRD related services than rural areas. Private health facilities of rural areas were in better condition to provide diabetes-related services than urban areas. Therefore, in order to cope up with the rising burden of diabetes, CVD and CRD and to minimize the burden of disease-specific out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, recommendations include strengthening and improving stewardship, improving quality of services and improving monitoring as well as supervision of decentralized health facilities.

The COVID-19 pandemic demands changes in using of medicinal plants. Empirically, the medicinal plants of Curcuma xanthorrhiza (CX) and black cumin (BC) have been used massively in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Curcuma xanthorrhiza and black cumin (CXBC) preparations have been developed with the main ingredients of BC oil and CX extract. The purpose of the study was to determine the antioxidant and immune-modulatory activities of CXBC preparations active substances (polyphenols, flavonoids, thymoquinone). We conducted experimental laboratory research. The immunomodulatory activity test was carried out on human large lung cancer cell line (HTB-183 cells) by observing the expression of tumor necrosis factor alfa (TNF-α) and interleukine 10 (IL-10). The results showed that the CXBC preparation contained 4% thymoquinone, 25.87 mg/ml polyphenols, and 41.86 mg/dl flavonoids. CXBC preparations contain vitamins (A, C, and E) and minerals (potassium, calcium). The antioxidant activity of the CXBC preparation was included in the strong category with IC50=54.87 ppm. CXBC preparations increased TNF-a expression and decreased IL-10 expression in HTB-183 cells. Based on the study results, it can be concluded that the CXBC preparation contains 4% thymoquinone, 25.87 mg/ml polyphenol, 41.86 mg/dl flavonoid, and a high level of vitamin and minerals. CXBC preparations have potent antioxidant activity, increase TNF-α and decrease IL-10 expression.
