Mediator: Jurnal Komunikasi focuses on communication studies and media. Although centered on communication, Mediator is open and welcomes the contribution of many disciplines and approaches that meet at crossroads with communication studies. Type of writing is in the form of scientific articles (the results of field research, conceptual articles, or desk studies). This journal is intended as a medium of scientific study to communicate vision, reflection, conceptual thinking, research results, interesting experiences in the field, and critical analysis-studies on contemporary communication issues.

Abstract

The main problem researched in this thesis was the existence of community radios in villages, that was about the roles of function of them correlated with the escalation of democratization in communication. The research was conducted in two Kecamatans that had different characteristics, that was Kecamatan Cisewu which was minim in any information exposure and geographically closed (blank spot) and Kecamatan Wanayasa which was relatively open to access any information. The theory used to study the problem were Habermas Communicative society theory and Uses and Dependency theory. The theory explained the correlation between social system and communication media system at a community. The democratization of communication was explained by Communitarianism Democracy Theory – Tehranian. The research method used was qualitative method with etnography communication. Data were collected through depth interview and focus group discussion. The key informan woman were formal and informal social leaders and the person who managed community radios. Focus group discussion was conducted to group of women, men, youths, and others ot both of kecamatans. Analysis of etnography of communication try to explore the native language, that was sundanese, used by the member of community, wether with or without community media. The result of the research is accordance with research question.The availability contribute awwarness about communication and information right for the community members. The public community process through radio community is the implementation of the daily public behaviour pattern of the community. The process of democratization communication run slower in the closed area, yet it is more dynamic in the opened area.

Abstract

Civic journalism is one concepts of journalism that seeks to build public participation in the democratic process through mass media channels. This research aims to explore the civic journalism applied by PR FM in West Java with the concept of civic journalism. This study uses a case study method with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews and observations. This study found the efforts of PR FM in building civic journalism with the concept of citizen journalism has been starting since its inception. PR FM from the beginning continued to campaign the importance of public involvement. Initially, PR FM gave an example, now that involvement is very high, so many public problems has resolved. Uniquely, PR FM is able to become a close friend to the listeners by becoming a place to sharing personal matters. PR FM intelligently positions itself as an active information bridge to direct every incoming content and aspiration.

Abstract

Televisi, di samping mengundang gugatan karena sejumlah efek negatifnya juga memiliki banyak sisi positip,  antara lain, sebagai media belajar bagl anak. Melalui metode Quantum Learning, suatu tayangan acara televisi diberi makna sebagai substansi pendidikan yang menyenangkan metode pengajaran partisipatif, serta suasana lingkungan yang memembuat anak merasa nyaman. Dalam hal ini kehadiran orang tua sebagai mitra dialog bagi anak adalah untuk memberikan makna yang mudah diserap mengenai suatu acara televisi, sangat diperlukan. meotode belajar dalam suasana menyenangkan. sebagai prinsip penting dalam metode  Quantum Learning  akan memberikan hasil yang lebih optimal. Metode ini berangkat dan keyakinan bahwa manusia ternyata memiliki kemampuan luar biasa untuk meloncat di atas kemampuan yang diperkirakan.

Abstract

Gamelan adalah tradisi musik yang berakar di Indonesia, dipertunjukkan di kepulauan Jawa, Madura, dan Bali dalam upacara-upacara adat dan ritual-ritual agama. Kendati secara tradisional gamelan dimainkan oleh warga pribumi, dengan meningkatnya popularitas budaya etnis Indonesia dalam lingkup internasional, gamelan baru-baru ini dimainkan pula oleh orang-orang asing. Studi berikut ini merupakan etnografi dari proses komunikasi dalam sebuah Orkestra Gamelan Amerika yang mengidentifikasi dua pertanyaan kunci: (1) Bagaimana gamelan dipelajari di luar konteks sosiokultural orisinalnya? (2) Bagaimana pengetahuan tersebar di antara komunitas yang spesifik ini? Melibatkan kurang lebih 30 anggota (pemusik dan penari) dari sebuah kelompok Gamelan Bali, dengan beragam latar belakang etnis, kebangsaan dan latar belakang musik, penelitian ini menyimpulkan adanya empat praktik komunikasi dalam mempelajari gamelan: (1) Vokalisasi (sebagai metode utama instruktur dalam mengajarkan cara memainkan gamelan); (2) Percakapan informal (sebagai bentuk praktik komunikasi yang memungkinkan anggota kelompok berinteraksi dalam percakapan bebas); (3) Metawacana (suatu proses di mana anggota-anggota senior mencapai keputusan manajemen pertunjukan); dan (4) Blessings, semacam upacara keagamaan memohon restu dari Yang Mahakuasa untuk kesuksesan acara. Keempat praktik komunikasi ini tidak sekadar membantu anggota mempelajari musik tradisional, tetapi juga memungkinkan para musisi tersebut menjadi anggota aktif dalam komunitas yang dikerangka oleh batas-batas kultural. Pada akhirnya, praktik komunikasi semacam ini membantu proses penyebaran pengetahuan di antara anggota-anggota kelompok.

Abstract

Call center is a part of contact center who responsible to serve customers. Call center relates corporate and targeted market. As communication media whose tasks are focused to serve the customers, call center receives and processes consumer expectations and hopes. The result can be processed as an opportunity for the corporate to expand its market and develop their products. Call center is believed could raise customer satisfactions by reduced service costs for each customer in long term action plan.

Abstract

US presidential elections become one of the hottest issues in political world nowadays. It draws attention not only from local federal countries, but also attracts international audiences as the candidates from Democrats are challenging each other. From political communication studies, the campaign stages of US presidential elections reflected a mature democratic political system which stands on many humanity values, such as truth, honesty, fairness, and respect for others. The issue toward candidate’s cleanliness was predicted would be determiner for each candidate whether or not they will move further in electoral process. People, or potential voters will count on cleanliness more than any other else.

Abstract

Rapid development of communication technology has shaped a new cultural landscape. In effect, the nature of mass media industry also changed a lot. To anticipate this new development, communication discipline needs a new study focused on media economy. Media economy is combination of two perspectives in media studies: business-economy perspective and media communication perspectives. The dimension of media in media economy emphasized three areas: production, content, and audiences. The dimension of economy in media economy studies focused on structure, conduct/policy, and performance. Meanwhile, the management of media corporation are consisted of revenue, cost and profit dimensions.

This research was intended to describe the effect ofsinetron "Karmila" exposure on the viewer sabout woman double role. The research was conducted in Bandung, used survey method. and the sample was J20 housewives in Bandung. The result showed that: (1) the content ofmesesage in "Karmila" influenced directly on the viewer attitude about woman doubel role; (2) the presentation ofmesesage in "Karmila" influenced directly on the viewer s attitude about woman doubel role; (3) the content ofmesesage and the presentation of mesesage in "Karmila" influenced directly on the viewer sattitude about woman doubel role.

Abstract

Frankfurt School of Thought, which rooted in Marxism and Critical paradigm, provided many ways to interpret the meaning of communication. This school of thought is primarily based on the main tenets of Critical Theory, i.e. totality, consciousness, anomie, and critic. Some questions arise concerning the ontology, epistemology, and axiology dimensions of Frankfurt School of Thought. Ontology discussion concerning the nature of communication involved an intensive outlook of Giddens’s Structuration Theory. Epistemology involved a discussion with Gramscian concepts of hegemony. Meanwhile, the problem of axiology is best addressed in Habermas fashion of agent-structur-dialectics.
