Abstract

Post-behavioralist critiques are a crucial foundation for changes in previous apolitical political research. Politics should be an academic instrument and a response to humanity’s challenges. Political design seeks to criticize the dominance of the logic of study that prioritizes analytical and objective methods. This study proposes political design as an alternative approach to Political Science, prioritizing creative and design thinking in addressing public problems. This paper identifies the shortcomings of conventional critical thinking approaches and introduces political design as a practical, solution-oriented method through a literature review method, specifically an integrative review. Politics has been redefined as an instrument for power solutions. This study highlights five core principles: promoting solutions for public problems, moving beyond theoretical frameworks to operational implementation, fostering innovation over ordinary resolutions, managing the interests of designers to protect public values, and grounding practice in the awareness of inherent power imbalances. The results present a synthesis of interdisciplinary literature that informs this new approach, while the conclusion discusses its potential contributions to Political Science.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of socio-economic factors on political participation in elections in Temanggung Regency. The research method employed is a quantitative combination of a survey involving 600 respondents from various districts in Temanggung Regency. The results reveal that factors such as education level, type of employment, and economic sector significantly impact community political participation. Higher education levels tend to enhance political awareness and engagement. Meanwhile, the type of employment and economic sectors influence patterns of political involvement. Economic issues such as unemployment and poverty present significant challenges faced by the people of Temanggung ahead of the elections. The recommendations of this study include increasing access to education, economic empowerment, and inclusive policies to encourage broader and more representative political participation.

Abstract

Stunting has become a national issue, as evidenced by the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 72 of 2021 concerning implementing the National Strategy for Accelerating the Reduction of Stunting. Although this national action plan has been developed, its implementation at the regional level requires effort. Even stakeholder coordination could have been more optimal, resulting in unmet objectives. This study highlights the importance of selecting an appropriate policy formulation model for addressing stunting, especially at the local level, considering the many stakeholders involved with diverse interests, particularly within government. Few researchers explain how the choice of policy model is made amidst the various alternative models available for government use. This research examines how the Padang Panjang City Government chose to address stunting using the incremental model. The incremental model is often viewed as non-progressive, tending toward the status quo, and reflective of conservative governance. However, the decision by the Padang Panjang City Government to use the incremental model has positively impacted the reduction of stunting prevalence. The key lies in how the Padang Panjang City Government maintains continuity and stability in the policies adopted by the central government, adapting and developing them according to the local community’s needs. This study demonstrates that the Padang Panjang City Government achieved continuity and stability in stunting management policies through an incremental approach shaped by four key variables: consensus and compromise, monitoring and evaluation, resource optimization, and resistance to radical changes. Using a qualitative case study method, data were gathered from interviews with key informants and document reviews. The findings emerged through a systematic process of coding and categorization, highlighting how incremental adjustments effectively reinforced policy sustainability over time.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the models and forms of Islamophobia practised by the political regime in power in Indonesia. This study also analyses why the government in power in Indonesia makes policies and takes actions that lead to Islamophobia. This article uses qualitative explanatory methods. The data sources come from in-depth interviews with various informants and data is also collected through a literature study by exploring relevant data from various sources that can be accessed online, including books, journals, websites, and news portals. This study found that the political motives and strategies of the ruling regime in making policies and taking actions were based on Islamophobia, namely by diminishing the political power of Islam in Indonesia and eliminating its influence, which could disrupt the continuity of the ruling regime, which is controlled by nationalist groups. That way, the government can maintain power and carry out its agendas.

Abstract

Indonesia has been transformed in developing more inclusive and participatory electoral mechanisms. However, the high cost of organizing elections has been a necessity. This article aims to explain the increase in electoral costs in periodic elections. The discussion focuses on the influence of political parties in increasing the political costs of elections, given that parties require costs for planning, campaigning and internal operations. This research uses a qualitative-explanatory approach, through data collection of official documents and media reports. The data that has been coded is then analyzed interactively, with the Nvivo 12 application. The results show that there is an increasing trend in the election budget, from the 2004 election to the last election in 2024. The increased costs follow the design of organizing elections and the response of political parties to the increase in campaign operational costs. The increase in electoral political costs is not followed by the structuring of the political financing system, proper supervision of party revenue sources, and rigorous transparency and accountability mechanisms. This article contributes to explaining the complexities and dynamics of electoral financing, focusing on the contribution of political parties in institutionalizing high-cost elections in Indonesia

Abstract

Indonesia has a diverse range of cultures that enable individuals to utilize their cultural identity as a representation of their values in politics. This study analyzes the role of customary law in local politics in Lampung as a cultural legitimacy strategy for expanding the electoral base. Data from mass media between 2020 and 2024 indicate that 15 traditional title conferral ceremonies were held for 26 political figures at both local and national levels. Based on this dataset, a media content analysis was conducted, focusing on four key elements: the recipients’ names, their status or political positions, the customary titles they received, and the authorities conferring these titles. The conferral process serves as a cultural legitimization strategy, enabling political candidates to present themselves as figures who understand and respect local values and traditions. In relation to the legislative elections, regional head elections, and the presidential election, these events reveal a tendency for political activities to be closely associated with individuals who receive traditional titles. This phenomenon represents the articulation of social and cultural capital in political dynamics, aiming to expand the electoral base. However, this reality also presents a critical challenge, especially in maintaining the authenticity of customary traditions so that they do not become merely a pragmatic instrument in political contestation. Therefore, regulations and cultural awareness are necessary to preserve the essence of tradition, ensuring it remains an integral part of society.

Abstract

This study critically examines how dynastic politics and party persistence reproduce elite power in Indonesia’s 2024 elections. It highlights a central paradox: elections remain procedurally competitive, yet democracy’s substance is increasingly weakened by oligarchic consolidation. Using a qualitative approach, the research combines a systematic review of literature with critical discourse analysis. The findings show that dynastic politics has become entrenched in both executive and legislative institutions. Nearly 30 percent of parliamentary members are linked to political families, while the rise of Gibran Rakabuming Raka, son of President Joko Widodo, as vice president reflects the normalization of political dynasties in democratic settings. Party persistence is reinforced through cartelization, bureaucratic co-optation, and strategic alliances that cut across ideology. Together, these dynamics create a pattern of “elite circulation without renewal,” where leadership changes but power remains concentrated within oligarchic networks. The implications are profound: Indonesia risks becoming a pseudo-democracy in which electoral procedures continue but meaningful competition, representation, and accountability are hollowed out. This contributes to democratic backsliding and narrows the space for citizen participation. By integrating classical elite theory with contemporary Indonesian evidence, this study highlights how dynastic politics and party persistence function as dual mechanisms of elite power reproduction.

Abstract

Despite significant evidence that compulsory voting affects voter turnout, several compulsory voting countries had abandoned this law. It raises the query of whether compulsory voting affects voter turnout at the population level of compulsory voting countries. Additionally, how compulsory voting affects turnout also remains inconclusive, especially because most of the conclusions of previous studies were derived only from the case of parliamentary elections. Thus, this study’s objectives are twofold. First, this study seeks to explicate whether or not compulsory voting affects voter turnout in the compulsory voting countries. Second, this study also intends to explain whether the effect of compulsory voting on voter turnout vary across different types of elections. This study applies the theoretical explanation on the relationship between compulsory voting and voter turnout. This study employs quantitative methods, including linear regression models and Manova test results. By utilizing panel data of voter turnouts in 34 compulsory voting countries from 1973 to 2018, I found that the effects of compulsory voting on voter turnout appear in various conditions, either with or without sanctions and enforcement. In addition to that, I also found that the effects of compulsory voting vary across two types of elections, between compulsory voting and former compulsory voting countries. In particular, the effects of compulsory voting are higher in the presidential than in the parliamentary elections, except when compulsory voting is enforced. This paper could contribute to debates on abolishing compulsory voting in former compulsory voting countries or on adopting compulsory voting in countries interested in implementing this mechanism.

Abstract

The local election (Pilkada) in Indonesia is increasingly revealing the influence of identity politics, especially in multicultural cities such as Singkawang. Known for its ethnic and religious diversity, comprising Chinese, Malay, Dayak, and other groups, Singkawang provides a unique arena where political competition is shaped not only by candidate competence and party platforms but also by mobilisation along identity lines. In the 2024 Pilkada, the city’s tolerant image contrasts with persistent contestations over representation and resource distribution, making identity both a tool of solidarity and a source of potential division. Examining Singkawang local politics thus offers valuable insights into how identity politics function in diverse urban settings and what this means to the trajectory of Indonesia’s democratic consolidation. This political milestone reflects the effective use of political identity strategies by parties in an inclusive civic culture. The present article employs qualitative explanatory methods. The data sources comprise in-depth interviews with a range of informants, as well as a literature study that involved exploring relevant data from various online sources, including books, journals, websites, and news portals. This study aims to explore the dynamics of local politics in Singkawang ahead of the 2024 Pilkada by examining the emergence of prospective mayoral candidates and local political issues. This study examines how political identity, particularly ethnic and religious affiliations, remains a decisive factor in shaping voter behavior and candidate strategies, reflecting both the city’s multicultural strength and its underlying political vulnerabilities. The findings are expected to contribute to the broader development of Indonesian political perspectives.
