Abstract

Multiculturalism is increasingly becoming an important discourse in the global community, that along with the increasing appearance of local identities and territorial claims. The rise of several candidates for national leaders in many countries and the winners of political contestations in those countries can be interpreted as a reaction to the ongoing multiculturalism problem. Observations made on political discourse in several European countries and Indonesia show that the issue of identity is facing multiculturalism today. The problems of conflicting identity claims that have been going on for years are accumulating and earn reinforcement when large waves of migration occur from other countries. The problems of multiculturalism in Indonesia as a residue of general election of 2014 are still clear to this day. The issue of identity continues to enliven public discourse until the jargons of nationalism and decisive action from the state emerge to compensate.

Abstract

At every stage of life, individuals inevitably face conflicts that shape their character. One of the challenges faced by individuals in the early adult stage, specifically those aged 18–30, is the quarter-life crisis. Cultural factors can influence how individuals cope with their problems. One such factor is reaching the stage of suwung. The objective of this study is to gain an understanding of the concept of suwung among young adults in Javanese society who are experiencing a quarter-life crisis. The researcher employed purposive sampling techniques combined with phenomenological study methods. Data analysis was conducted using the IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) method. The results of the study indicate that both subjects were able to understand the existence of God, comprehend their position in the universe, recognise themselves—particularly in terms of what they possess and aspire to achieve—engage in positive actions, and strive to address challenges in life.

Abstract

The tradition of drinking Nyaneut Tea is a culture that has been passed down from generation to generation and is often used as a guide for Sundanese people to respect and stay in touch through serving a cup of warm tea. The culture of the Nyaneut Tea tradition is slowly fading among the people with low awareness of preservation, wealth, and culture and the lack of existence of the Nyaneut Tea Tradition so that tea is only seen as a side dish and without meaning. This study aims to determine the existence of the Nyaneut Tea Tradition today, the efforts of the local community to maintain the Nyaneut Tea Tradition and the background of the Nyaneut Tea occurrence so that it can become an ancestral cultural heritage that lasts from generation to generation. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, to obtain strong data by conducting interviews, observations, and documentation. The location determination was carried out in Cigedug village, Garut Regency as a place for research activities. The results of the study show that the Nyaneut Tea Tradition is indeed lacking in existence among today's society. Nyaneut culture has begun to fade even though Nyaneut itself has many benefits for body health and teaches the rules of drinking tea that need to be applied to the community for etiquette.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) identify the reasons behind the tradition of migration among Minangkabau women in Kemiri Muka Market, Beji, Depok City, West Java Province; and (2) examine the dynamics of the matrilineal system experienced by Minangkabau women traders in Kemiri Muka Market, Beji, Depok City, West Java Province, during migration. This research employs a qualitative method, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that: (1) the push factors driving Minangkabau women to migrate are economic and educational needs, while the pull factors include easier access to education, better income and employment opportunities, and encouragement from family members—such as siblings or husbands—who had migrated earlier. (2) The dynamics of the matrilineal system in relation to the preservation, safeguarding, and management of ancestral property change when Minangkabau women migrate. After migration, the status of traditional assets—such as the rumah gadang (traditional house), fields, and rice paddies—undergoes transformation. The rumah gadang, which historically served not only as a physical residence but also as a cultural symbol, has shifted in function and is now often inhabited by sons, even though it is traditionally reserved for daughters. Likewise, fields and plantations are now managed by male descendants, and rice paddies are handled solely by family members who remain in the village. When Minangkabau women choose to migrate, they no longer fulfill their traditional role as daughters in preserving, safeguarding, and managing ancestral property.
