Abstract

Previous research on pre-service teachers’ motivation to pursue a career in teaching found different results. Some research found altruistic motivation dominant in determining career decisions, while others suggest extrinsic or intrinsic motivation. The current study extended the topic by relating pre-service English teachers’ motivation to teach to English-speaking self-efficacy. There were 94 pre-service English teachers of different semesters participated in this study. Data were collected with a Likert-type questionnaire. Pre-service English teachers have a high motivation to pursue a career in teaching, and extrinsic motivation was the most dominant motive. The nobility of the profession, sustainability of job demand, inspiration from the teachers, and flexible working hours are among the extrinsic motives. The pre-service teachers also have a high level of English-speaking self-efficacy. However, they still have problems with anxiety, the use of idioms, the use of accurate grammar and vocabulary, and fluency. Between motivation to teach and their speaking self-efficacy lies a significant positive correlation at a moderate level. This moderate level of the relationship suggests that English-speaking self-efficacy is not a determining factor in motivating pre-service English teachers to have a career in teaching. Consequently, some English teachers may have inadequate proficiency in the language they teach.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the patterns of technology usage. Specifically, on the implementation of blended learning (BL) in higher education institutions. The case study explores usage patterns, influencing factors, and success factors. The data sources came from the Google Classroom log activity of 35 departments, consisting of five vocational programs, 28 undergraduate programs, and two professional programs in a university for three years with an average in a semester. A method called the customer window quadrant (CWQ) was utilized to analyze the pattern. In addition, a questionnaire was deployed to measure the teacher’s satisfaction with using the Google Classroom in a blended learning setting. The results show two dominant activities in Google Classroom, namely assigning tasks and quizzes. For the quiz, there were two popular question types, i.e., multiple-choice and short answers questions. The activity of using the Google Classroom has doubled in the three years. Assigning tasks to projects becomes the task in the Google Classroom. The usage patterns of Google Classroom are based on the level of importance. There are three activities considered the most important, namely creating class, topic, and material course. Moreover, the most influencing factors are stability, convenience, simplicity, velocity, and reliability.

Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak has forced all courses to be carried out online. This study aims to explain the characteristics of an enjoyable online learning model based on the platform, the content, and the learning strategy for vocational students. Data was collected using closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires which were responded to by 110 students in 2019/2020. The closed-ended questionnaire revealed the most preferred learning elements, and the open-ended questionnaire was to clarify their reasons. The data were arranged sequentially from the quantitative data to the qualitative data. The results of the study showed that: i) The preferred online platforms were Moodle, Google Meet, and WhatsApp. They like Moodle because the content is well structured, Google Meet is easily accessible, and WhatsApp is their daily routine application; ii) The learning content consists of two to three resources namely: 6-10 pages of papers, 11-15 pages PowerPoint, and 6-10 minutes videos. Too much content causes a heavy learning burden; iii) Most students preferred the blended learning strategy. The synchronous lectures for 60-75 minutes can motivate them because they can interact with lecturers and other students. Asynchronous lectures are more flexible that can be done anytime and anywhere so that the students become more independent in their learning.

Abstract

Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is a significant stage to develop responsible generations. Holistic child development may be possible through a plan of early childhood education (ECE) and early learning. This study is planned to explore the role of school leadership in promoting ECCE in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan. This research study may play a significant role in sensitizing the educationist, practitioners, pedagogical leadership in early learning centers, and political leadership. The study was quantitative in nature. In the first step, a stratified sampling technique was used to select the districts among the three divisions of AJK. In the second step, a simple random sampling technique was used. Self-developed a five-point Likert scale questionnaire was used to collect the data. The study concluded that leadership plays a significant role in promoting ECCE. It is encouraging that educational leadership involves parents in the process of teaching-learning. Learners are happy in the school activities, and academic leadership is planning to minimize the workload of kids. It is recommended that children may be facilitated with better infrastructure.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship in technical and vocational education is a current and relevant topic. While the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) and personality traits as determinants of entrepreneurial intention (EI) has been extensively studied, the role of ESE and personality traits as determinants of vocational students’ EI is still poorly understood. Thus, this study employed ESE and big five personality traits to explore the determinants of EI among vocational college students. This study’s survey had a sample size of 162 technical vocational education and training (TVET) college students, enrolled in technology in automotive, technology in welding, and technology in refrigeration and air conditioning programs. Data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression. The results indicate that apart from neuroticism, openness to experience, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extraversion were positively associated with EI. The results also confirm that ESE is a predictor of EI. Going forward, the article intends to contribute to a better understanding of ESE and personality traits that influence vocational students’ EI, as well as provide some important insights into the unique aspects of TVETs that empower youth to actively participate in micro-entrepreneurial initiatives. This study encourages academics and policymakers to reconsider the approach used in entrepreneurship education in the vocational setup.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the wellbeing of people worldwide, especially the younger population, primarily students, who are ill-equipped to cope with the new norm. The need to adapt to the new learning methods has created greater difficulties. Previous research stated that altered life routine and upsetting life events have led to psychological disorders like depression, anxiety, and stress, with females experiencing higher degrees of disorder. With the objectives to further investigate the escalating students’ mental wellbeing issues, the researchers focused on gender comparison among Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) students. There were 1,931 students from all UiTM campuses answered Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21) questionnaire online to test their levels of depression, anxiety and stress while attending online distance learning (ODL) classes. Descriptive and independent t-test analyses were performed using IBM-SPSS AMOS version 24 software. The result indicated that both genders’ levels of depression and stress were normal but most females experienced an extremely severe anxiety level. There also existed significant differences at 5% level of significance between the genders for anxiety and stress disorder levels. The findings are hoped to provide relevant authorities a better understanding on the appropriate intervention approaches focusing on gender to alleviate the COVID-19 impacts and prevent potential declines in the students’ wellbeing.

Abstract

The development of the COVID-19 situation in Indonesia affected particularly education sector in Indonesia significantly when learning loss occurs. The majority of students forced to attend online learning during the pandemic era are Generation Z (Gen Z). Gen Z is viewed as a digital natives group that can adapt quickly to online learning, but independent online learning situations make Gen Z vulnerable to experiencing learning loss. It will be interesting to find out the process of controlling learning loss done by Gen Z as digital natives. This research used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The main informant consisted of 32 students selected purposively with the criteria of those born in 2000-2008. Few in-depth interviews were conducted offline and the majority of them are conducted online. The finding of research shows particularly that the experience of Zillennial generation group (cohort) with online learning before the pandemic (Because-motives) and during the pandemic can equip them to control learning loss they feel conscious (In-order-to-motive). Another finding leads to the creation of three Gen Z Typications in online learning during the pandemic time including inconsistent, proactive, learning independence, and desperation Typication. Generation Z group exists as one generation consciously experiencing loss of learning during pandemic incidence.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to study personal factors that can influence the formation of attitudes towards the success and failure of the other in adolescence. The psychodiagnostics techniques used in the study included Beskova’s methodology modified by Dubovskaya and Serdakova, the methodology for diagnosing the level of empathy by Boyko, emotional intelligence test by Hall and Dembo-Rubinstein self-esteem measurement methodology modified by Prikhozhan. There is a correlation between the attitudes towards the success and failure of a peer and personality traits in adolescence. It has been shown that young men and women are frequently characterized by a positive perception of the other, sincere joy and admiration for their success, and sympathy in case of failure and success of the other. A direct correlation was revealed between the level of empathy and a positive attitude towards the success of the other, which confirms the role of the personal factor in the formation of interpersonal relations.

Abstract

Online learning is being considered a new model of knowledge exchange in modern education. In parallel with the incredible impacts of the global pandemic, this is considered an opportunity to promote the development of online learning globally. Therefore, this study proposed a research framework including four factors affecting learner satisfaction towards online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic at a university, which are system quality, service quality, transformational leadership, and self-efficacy. A questionnaire was conducted online to assess which 131 respondents were representative students from two large private universities in Da Nang: FPT University and Duy Tan University. The results from the regression analysis show that three factors have a positive impact on learner satisfaction during COVID-19. This study concludes that students at private universities in Da Nang prioritize system quality as the most significant factor in their satisfaction with the online learning system, followed by transformational leadership and the last one is self-efficacy. Therefore, it can be more strategic for private organizations, developers, software designers, or even transformation-trained trainers to be emphasized to build a system of processes for implementing online learning for students effectively.

Abstract

High quality early childhood education (ECE) enables children to enjoy the experience and have nurturing environment that promotes holistic development. The key performance indicators such as quality pre-school’s environment, teachers and assistant teachers, learning materials have been predicted to produce desirable outcomes. However, the challenge is to identify the predictors that can quantify the definition of a quality teacher. This study uses questionnaire to assess individual perceptions and views on quality key performance indicators of early childhood pre-school center. The study’s findings revealed that the gap analysis related to the qualification of pre-school teachers and ratio teacher-child below the standard. Even though teacher-child ratio in private pre-schools is small because most of pre-schools do not employ assistant teacher as practiced in other pre-schools. Thus, the study found that the performance of children’s abilities in Ministry of Education pre-school and private pre-schools exceeded the national standard of 76.2% National Average of Reading and Writing, and 64.6% National Average of Arithmetic. However, based on benchmark 100% achievement, the screening performance report shown children far left behind. In conclusion, these findings are important to be given attention and remedial action in order the improvement and quality of pre-school achieve the minimum standard.
