Abstract

This study aims to describe the spatial reasoning, visualization, and mathematical representation abilities of Mathematics Education students in solving two spatial geometry problems. The study used a mix method with a descriptive approach. The subjects were 19 students from the class of 2025. Data collection was carried out by a test using two questions. The first question relates to determining the shortest path on the surface of a cube through unfolding, while the second question relates to determining the distance from a point to a plane on the cube. Subjects’ answers were categorized into four quality levels: category A (correct and complete answer), B (initial model is correct but incomplete), C (major strategy or representation error), and D (strategy cannot be operationally formalized). The data show that 9 subjects fell into category B, 9 subjects fell into category C, and 1 subject fell into category D. In the first question, the average subject had a moderate level of spatial reasoning and representation, with visualizations already quite apparent. Subjects tended to be able to construct mathematical visualizations and representations, although some had not yet provided a complete minimum justification. In the second question, the average subject had a low level of spatial reasoning and representation, with visualizations beginning to appear but lacking operational capabilities. Subjects experienced more fundamental difficulties, particularly in constructing planes, determining relevant distances, and formalizing relationships between lines. These results point to the need to emphasize representation translation, mathematical modeling, and argument validation in geometry learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transmission dynamics of Tuberculosis (TB) in Pontianak City in 2024 using the SIR and SEIR models to evaluate system stability and disease transmission potential. The methodology involves formulating systems of differential equations, determining equilibrium points, performing local stability analysis using the Jacobian matrix, and calculating the basic reproduction number as an epidemiological threshold parameter. The epidemiological parameters and population data used were obtained from the 2024 West Kalimantan Health Profile as an official data source, which were subsequently normalized into population proportions. To verify the analytical results, numerical simulations were conducted using Python. The findings indicate that the basic reproduction number in both models is less than one, implying that the system converges to the disease-free equilibrium and that the infection cannot sustain long-term transmission. Numerical results show that the proportions of infected and exposed individuals gradually decline to zero. Furthermore, simulations of the SEIR model with the initial condition produce dynamics identical to the SIR model, confirming that SEIR extends SIR when the latent compartment is considered. These results demonstrate that mathematical modeling provides a quantitative framework for understanding TB dynamics and supports the evaluation of disease control strategies based on epidemiological parameters.

Abstract

This study aims to explore geometry concepts embedded in Mandar Rawana and examine their implementation in mathematics learning. A qualitative approach with an ethnographic method was employed. The research was conducted in Renggeang Village, Limboro District, Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi. The research informant consisted of one artisan and a rawana player selected purposively based on their active involvement in the making and playing of rawana. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, with source triangulation applied to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that Mandar Rawana contains four geometry concepts: circle and its elements on the surface of the skin and wooden frame, arc and chord in the arrangement of fastening nails along the frame edge, symmetry in the balanced shape of the Rawana from all directions, and similarity in two Rawana units of different sizes. All four concepts can be implemented in school mathematics learning through direct exploration using Rawana as a concrete and contextual medium rooted in local wisdom. Theoretically, these findings reinforce ethnomathematics studies demonstrating that local cultural artifacts represent mathematical concepts. Practically, Mandar Rawana has strong potential as a contextual and meaningful geometry learning medium for students.

Abstract

The long time span between materials makes it possible for students to forget the concepts of two-dimensional shapes. Therefore, a method is needed to remind students, one of which is by using game media. The purpose of this study was to apply the “Guess Geometry” media in the apperception process of the concept of quadrilaterals and triangles as a basis for learning the concept of similarity and congruence. The subjects were six seventh-grade students at one of the Islamic Junior High Schools in Banyuwangi with high abilities. This study used qualitative methods. Data collection was carried out using observation, interviews, and documentation methods. The researcher acted as the main instrument and was assisted by observation and interview guidelines. Data were analyzed qualitatively using the Miles & Huberman model. The study resulted in 3 subjects winning according to the indicator by guessing 3 to 5 two-dimensional shapes correctly in less than 30 minutes. The other 3 subjects showed misconceptions about the properties of similar two-dimensional shapes. Nevertheless, the media can be used to support the apperception process of the concept of similarity and congruence with teacher guidance, especially for students with low and medium abilities.

Abstract

Forests are one of Indonesia’s and the world’s most valuable assets that must be preserved. Protection can be achieved through various means to ensure forests retain their resources and produce them. Furthermore, efforts are also needed to avoid threats from their surroundings. One obvious threat to forest resources is industrialization. This study aimed to examine mathematical control models for preventing forest resource depletion due to industrialization. In this study, a new mathematical model was developed by modifying the previous model by adding government industrialization controls. A new objective function was then developed to analyze the forest resource classes after they were controlled. Optimal control was obtained using the Pontryagin Principle, followed by numerical simulations. The results of the numerical simulations showed that forest resource density did not decrease and even increased despite the depletion of forest resources due to industrialization. Therefore, forest resource protection and SDGs 15 (terrestrial ecosystems) can be achieved if Industrialization is controlled by the government.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the widespread study of Concrete Representational Abstract (CRA) in mathematics learning across various focuses, levels, and methods. The purpose of this study is to examine the trend of CRA research and identify the dominant focus, distribution of educational levels, research methods, contribution of findings, and research gaps. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the PRISMA flow through the stages of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. Articles were searched through Google Scholar, DOAJ, Sinta, Scopus, ERIC, and ScienceDirect in the period 2017–2026. Of the 28 identified articles, 21 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed based on year, method, level, study focus, instruments, main results, and limitations. The results of the study indicate that CRA research mostly focuses on conceptual understanding and is dominated by quantitative methods. CRA studies have also developed towards mathematical representation, mathematical literacy, knowledge retention, creative problem solving, inclusive learning, and media integration. These findings indicate that CRA contributes as an instructional framework that helps students’ understanding transition from concrete to abstract, but cannot yet be generalized because a meta-analysis has not been conducted.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of STEAM learning based on the GeoGebra application on students’ geometric representation competence in three-dimensional geometry material. This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of two eighth-grade classes at SMP Plus Darussalam Blokagung Banyuwangi. Data were collected through pretest, posttest, documentation, and assessment rubrics. The data analysis used normality test, homogeneity test, and Independent Sample t-Test using SPSS. The results showed that STEAM learning based on GeoGebra significantly improved students’ geometric representation competence. This learning model also enhanced students’ visualization skills, creativity, and active participation in mathematics learning.
