Abstract

This paper is aimed to determine the appropriate Christian attitude towards the practice of belis (dowry) in Sumba Island. The biblical, anthropological, and sociological concepts of dowry are the conceptual framework for understanding and analyzing the concept of belis. Based on systematic reviews and asymmetric comparisons of the Sumbanese belis concepts and biblical concept of dowry, it is found that rejection of the practice of belis is unnecessary. Belis can be practiced by Sumbanese Christians with a critical attitude. The goal is the transformation of the belis culture. Transformation is achieved through several actions: doing belis principles that do not conflict with biblical principles; rejecting the principles that conflict with biblical principles; and avoiding the practices of belis which have been distorted by deviating motivations either from the biblical or the rights belis principles. Keywords: Belis; Dowry; Marapu; Sumba; Cultural Transformation.

Abstract

Jesus is a teacher who sets an example of His teaching to the disciples. The story of the early disciples' vocation provides evidence that Jesus is expertise in personal development. This fact is a moral criticism issue that is not in line with religious values and a challenge to Christian religious education which means the Church work in the educational issue. Through a library research approach, this study aims to explore the pedagogical meaning and methods of Christian religious education in vocational stories (Matthew 4: 18-22, Markus. 1: 16-20, Luke 5: 1-14). The focus is on the pedagogical meaning, methodology and implementation of the teachings of Jesus in the vocational story. The result is an imaginative analogy, a term that affirms the educational meaning of Christian religious and educational methodology where the experience (in the light of) faith is accompanied by acts that are much more effective in Christian religious education. Today philanthropy is always understood as the charity acts towards the poor. Many social organizations are active in the philanthropy field. However, these philanthropic acts only represent charitable or charity acts. Therefore, this paper intends to explore the biblical meaning of philanthropyitself. It will construct a theology of philanthropy according to the interpretation of Acts 28:1-2, 7-10 and Titus 3:1-10. The main author’s argument in this paper is that philanthropic theology is an act of friendship between God and humans also human to human which is the church basis and character, in relationships with other religions. This research process will use library research and hermeneutical processes to explore the meaning of the philanthropy concept. In the end, I will propose the implication of philanthropy theology in daily life with other religions. Keywords: Philanthropy; Friendship; God; Human; Life With Other Religions.

Abstract

Abstract

Pornography is a culture that develops rapidly along with advances in science and technology. In fact, pornography is considered as something common and has become a commercial commodity an economic value. Looking at this reality, a deep theological reflection is needed in order to improve the paradigm and praxis of the body and sexuality understanding. By using literature research, this paper shows that pornography has distorted people’s understanding of sexuality and their perceptions of fellow humans. The idea and act of objectifying the body for one’s own pleasure has been valid and is something considered right by society. Therefore, this paper offers a theology of the body as an effort to revise the wrong perspective of the body. The body is not just a body, but the entire existence of a human being which but also has a personal and spiritual identities.

Abstract

Secularism is a condition of the times we live in today. It gives awareness to the global community that in reality there is only the immanent—there is no God. So, theism is seen as just one of the many options available: atheism becomes even more attractive to embrace. Generally, a theist will respond by demonstrating the plausibility of theism through positive arguments for the existence of God. The author rejects this and offers an approach from Reformed epistemology, as a thesis on how one knows God, to the problem. Through Reformed epistemology, the author views secularism as what is understood as a cognitive environment. As a cognitive environment that prevents the “knowing subject” from knowing God, the authors point out that the appropriate response to secularism is to include the “knowing subject” into the liturgy. Thus, liturgy can also be understood as an act that has an epistemic dimension that enables a person to know God.
