Abstract

This research entitled Deixis in Justin Bieber’s Songs. The aims of this research is to analyze kind of deixis that used of Justin Bieber’s song lyrics in ‘Purpose Album and dominant deixis that used in this song. The focus types deixis which analyzed are: person dexis, place deixis and time deixis.The data used to complete this study is song lyrics of Justin Bieber in ‘Purpose Album. The song lyrics data got from internet browsing. Descriptive qualitative design is used to conduct this research. Having analyzed the data, the findings of this study are: (a) There are three kinds deixis are found, namely: person deixis (you,I, we, it, me, us, your, myself, yourself), time deixis (all day, all night, then, when, once, twice, tonight, at second chance, all the times, night, and place deixis (in this game, in my work, on my own); (b) The deixis words to be analyzed are 145 words; 130 words are person deixis, 11 words are time deixis, 4 words are place deixis; (c) The dominantly deixis that found is person deixis are 130 words or 89,6%. Abstract

This research entitled ”Presupposition in Kim Nam Joon’s Speech at United Nation General Assembly. It is a descriptive analysis of speech that used types of presuppositions”. The objectives of this research are to know the types of presupposition and to find out the most dominant type of presupposition in the speech of Kim Namjun. The research method used qualitative descriptive and it is used to analyse the speech as a sample based on Guswita & Widodo's theory. They mention that six types of presupposition, there are; existential presupposition, factive presupposition, lexical presupposition, structural presupposition, non-factive presupposition, and counterfactual presupposition. In analyzing, the research watched the speech which lasts about six minutes, then transcribed, and analysed based on Guswita & Widodo's theory (2019). The result of this study shows that there are four types of presupposition in the speech; existential presuppositions, lexical presupposition, non-factive presupposition, and structural presupposition. With the percentage of existential is 20 or 62.05%, lexical are 9 or 28, 12%, structural are 2 or 6.25 %, and the last non-factive is just 1 or 3,12%. So, the most dominant type is commonly used in the Kim Namjun’s Speech at UNs General Assembly is existential presuppositions. Keywords:  Presupposition, UN’ General Assembly, Kim Namjoon’s Speech

Abstract

The aim of this research is to figure out the use of the think-write-pair-share (TWPS) technique in writing. The method was the quantitative method. The population were tenth-grade students at one of vocational school in Cipanas in the academic year 2020/2021. The sample was 72 students that were divided into control class and experimental class. The experimental class was the class which learn writing recount text through think-write-pair-share (TWPS) technique, while control class was the one which used conventional method. The collected data were analyzed by using T-Test. The result showed that the value of T-test (0.027) was lower (<) than 0,05. Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This meant that there was the difference between the class taught by think-write-pair-share (TWPS) technique and conventional method. Here, the students learned by using think-write-pair-share (TWPS) tended to be able to share their opinion in recount text. They also became more active. This implies that the think-write-pair-share (TWPS) technique can be used in teaching writing.Keywords:  Think-Write-Pair-Share Technique, Writing, Recount Text.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to reveal the students’ opinion on online learning in the midst of the covid-19 plague. The covid-19 is a kind of virus that attack a human with fever, shortness of breath, influenza, and other types of pain in the same time. The covid-19 pandemic occurred in early December 2019 in Wuhan China. The pandemic spread throughout the world including Indonesia. Indonesia has more than 8000 people who have possitive covid-19. Because of that, Indonesian goverment give policy to push the number of victims. The policy is about Social distancing, restrictions on work activities, PSBB (Pembatasan social Berskala Besar), and termination of teaching and learning activities. The researcher uses qualitative method to get a deep data. The research define the result briefly. The researcher takes ten partisipants randomly. The twenty participants are the students of English education study programs. It can be concluded that students who are doing online learning in the midst of the covid-19 plague have  trouble from some reasons. In the other side, some of them have really good experiences with online learning. Abstract

The study reported here aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy on students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts. Using a quasi-experimental method, this study compared two English classes: one was assigned as the experimental group and the other as the control group, in terms of reading comprehension improvement, which was measured through a pretest and posttest. The study involved a total of 46 eighth-graders of a junior high school in Kerinci regency, Jambi Province, Indonesia. The control group was taught using a conventional strategy while the experiment group was engaged in the QAR strategy to answer reading comprehension questions of narrative texts. The findings revealed that the QAR strategy was effective in enhancing students’ scores in reading comprehension, which was indicated by a significant difference in the pretest and posttest scores of the experimental group. The findings of this study add to the current literature on the significance of using the QAR strategy to foster student reading. Abstract

Tourism industry nowadays requires tourism executives to master English as a universal language. Providing English materials for tourism can be conducted in universities through English for Specific Purpose (ESP) course. However, it is important to make sure that the syllabus and materials provided can fulfill students' learning needs. This research aims to design a syllabus and materials for tourism students at UIB based on their needs. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the materials are specifically designed for the students to learn through online. Plomp's R&D model was chosen as the research method. The subjects were forty tourism students on 1st semester, one UIB English lecturer, and four stakeholders. Based on the data, it is stated that the students need to focus more on enhancing their communication for the future. Speaking and listening are the skills that will be centred in the ESP course. Multi-syllabus is chosen as the type of syllabus that will be used which consists 14 meeting topics that were produced based on the need analysis. The materials used are PPT slides, YouTube link, audio files, lesson plans, and worksheet. The result shows that the students were satisfied with the implementation. Abstract

This study strives to disclose the conversational implicature in a drama script. The objective of the study was to discover what conversational maxims flouted to yield conversational implicature in a drama script entitled “Den of Dragons”. The research method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method. In undertaking the analysis, this study employs Grice’s theory about conversational implicature. The findings showed that from thirty nine excerpts, the number of non-observance of the maxims, especially flouting the maxims, was eighteen excerpts and the rest belonged to observing the maxims. The number of flouting the maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner respectively were nine, three, five, one. In conclusions, the conversational maxims flouted in this drama script are maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. Furthermore, the most dominant flouting maxim is flouting the maxim of Quantity and the rarest occurrence belongs to flouting the maxim of Manner. In accordance with flouting the maxim of Quantity, the utterances said by the characters are less or more informative than what are required or expected. Keywords:  Conversational Implicature, Den of Dragons

Abstract

This paper reports the implementation of Genre Based Approach in teaching writing. The research was conducted at Junior High School in Bandung. The subjects of this research were the seventh grade students of junior high school. The data were obtained from observation. Then, the data was analyzed descriptively. The researchers used descriptive qualitative. The findings revealed that there are four stages in implementing Genre based Approach in teaching writing such as building knowlede, modelling, joint construction and individual construction. Abstract

TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms for sharing short videos. Many relevant studies have suggested that social media integrated with short videos can help increase their mastery of English. Therefore, this study aims to know whether the TikTok application can improve students’ vocabulary and investigate their attitude towards learning English through the TikTok application. The researcher employed quantitative approaches in this study, including a one-group pretest-posttest design and a semi-structured interview as a measuring instrument. The subject of this study was sixth-grade students of Phanang-Phakerng School Thailand. The result showed that the improvement percentage was 95%, which means that the TikTok application effectively affects students’ learning outcomes in mastering vocabulary. Based on the interview results, the participants showed positive attitudes toward learning English through the TikTok application. Therefore, this result of this study could give an alternative strategy to the teacher to teach vocabulary by using the TikTok application in the classroom due to the students' positive attitudes. Keywords:  TikTok, Vocabulary, Students’ Attitude

Abstract

Enlarging and enriching student’s vocabularies have many ways, for instance by media picture to get new vocabulary, reading a story book which has a picture on it, etc. Teachers should find an easy way in teaching such as strategies, methods, techniques and interesting materials, thus that the teacher can deliver the lesson easily depending on student’s behavior and characteristic. This research is conducted to fulfill need and to find the difficulties of using game for learning purposes. The difficulties in learning vocabulary using cooperative learning through party game Undercover will be found out by interviewing and giving questionnaire that are conducted to the eighth grade students in SMPN 32 bandung, The research findings show that learning vocabulary using party games Undercover is not difficult at all. This research can be started as an evidence to convince teachers who still use rigid and serious form of teaching technique and teacher should be considering and changing their method to the one that suitable for the characteristics  and behavior of their students so that the student’s learning performance can be improved and not willingly feel bored. Keywords:  Vocabulary, Party Game, Cooperative Learning
