The purposes of this study are to: (1) investigate how role-play technique is used in English speaking class, (2) to find out advantages of using role-play technique in teaching speaking from students’ and teacher’s perception, and (3) to figure out the difficulties that students and an English teacher encountered when using role-play technique in the classroom. The method used is qualitative with observation and interview as data collection techniques. The findings showed that the teacher carried out role-play technique with several stages such as delivering materials, dividing students into several groups to make a dialogue, students’ practicing the dialogue in their group, students’ performing the dialogue in front of the class, and evaluating students’ performance. Role-play technique provided some advantages. Firstly, it gave students opportunities to practice their speaking ability. Secondly, it increased students’ confidence to practice speaking in front of the classroom. Then, it improved students’ interests during the learning process. Fourth, it made students add more English vocabularies. Finally, students could communicate in English frequently with their friends so they could maintain their social relation with their peers. When using role-play technique, the students found difficulties related to pronunciation, word or sentence structure, lack of vocabulary, and memorizing the dialogue. The teacher found that role-play technique was time consuming, and it was hard to make sure the suitability of the material to the activities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the English language learning management plan carried out by UPB (Unit Pengembangan Bahasa) UIN (Universitas Islam Negeri) Antasari during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as to analyze this English language learning process carried out by UPB UIN Antasari during the Covid-19 pandemic through a learning management plan perspective. This research is a qualitative field research, where data is collected through observation during the teaching-learning process, interviews with UPB managers, teaching staff (tutors), and program participants (students), as well as document study of textbooks and other learning documents. The author then validated the data using triangulation techniques, and analyzes them descriptively. The results showed that during the Covid-19 pandemic, UPB had implemented learning management plan in its intensive English learning. UPB has carried out preparations for the effective week according to the academic calendar, as well as making annual programs and semester programs in the form of textbooks. In terms of honorarium, UPB is even above the generally accepted standard, due to the consistency of tutor fees even in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The main drawback of the implementation of learning management plan by UPB is the absence of lesson plan documents and syllabus, However, the absence of these two learning documents does not necessarily make this intensive program a failure, because UPB has provided textbooks to replace it. Based on the final exam results, it is proven that this intensive program is successful in improving students' English skills.

Abstract

This research seeks to investigate the application of online English news in teaching the writing of news item texts. An experimental study with quantitative data analysis was employed in the present study. The instruments used were tests (pre-test, post-test), and a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions. The researcher administered a pre-test in the first place before applying online news. Then, at the end of the course, the researcher administered a post-test to find out the final results of the application. The population in this study was students of class XII with a sample of 54 students. To assess students’ writing score, an analytic scoring rubric developed by Jacob et al was adopted. In this study, it can be seen from the results of the pre-test and post-test which were calculated using an independent sample T-test through the SPSS program, that the significance obtained was 0.01, which means that the use of online news texts was used effectively. In the results of the questionnaire, the answers (yes) were chosen as many as 113; the answers (sometimes) were chosen as many as 92; and the answers (no) were 65. This means that majority of students at MAN Tanjung Pinang responded positively towards the application of online English news.
