Abstract

In their book, Zoltán Dornyei and Jean-Marc Dewaele's Questionnaires in Second Language Research offers a comprehensive, reader-friendly overview of the theory of questionnaire design, administration, and processing, made accessible with a detailed how-to guide and concrete, real-world applications. This third edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect advancements in the field and includes recent case studies focusing on the considerations, challenges, and opportunities of online questionnaires at all research stages. In this book, the authors also guide readers on how to use the IRIS database and how to clean, process, and analyze questionnaire data before reporting findings. This is an invaluable resource for SLA, applied linguistics, psychology, and education students and researchers interested in understanding and conducting both qualitative and quantitative questionnaire-based L2 research. Abstract

Listening ability can be interpreted as the ability to understand information when the activity takes place. However, according to students who have studied English for several years, listening is considered one of the most difficult skills for them. This study aims to learn about students' difficulties with listening activities, their perceptions of their ability to listen, and contributing factors to their ability to listen well. After that, a questionnaire and a set of listening tests were given out. The challenges, main factors that prevent students from listening, and learning experiences were investigated using both quantitative and qualitative data. This study's findings revealed that students' listening skills were lacking because they were still unable to finish the fundamental listening skills test. Also, the majority of them thought that the classes in listening were hard for them because they had trouble with certain teaching and learning activities. The students knew about the significance of the listening activities, but they still required assistance from the lecturer and other students for the activities for instruction and learning. In conclusion, being able to listen well remained a challenge during the first semester of the 2022/23 academic year at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Pringsewu Lampung.

Abstract

This research explores the utilization of Padlet as a collaborative writing platform in enhancing students' argumentative essay writing skills. Employing a case study by means of observation, document analysis, and interviews, the study examines how Padlet is employed on collaborative essay writing classroom and how it facilitates students’ writing skills in argumentative essay writing process. The research findings reveal that while Padlet effectively fosters collaborative interactions among students, enabling them to engage in constructive feedback provision and substantive discussions, its underutilization remains noticeable. The platform's inability to facilitate targeted feedback due to the absence of specific text highlighting and commenting features emerged as a critical limitation hindering comprehensive feedback provision. In spite of these limitations, Padlet significantly improved various dimensions of students' writing skills. The collaborative environment nurtured by Padlet enabled peer feedback exchange, leading to enhancements in grammar, vocabulary, coherence, and overall essay quality. However, students' restricted exploration of Padlet's features underscores the gap between its potential and actual utilization within the classroom. To advance this research, future studies should focus on addressing Padlet's functional limitations by advocating for feature enhancements facilitating targeted feedback.
