Abstract

Movie is regarded as a visual medium that offers a comprehensive presentation of a phenomenon in a defined time. This study employed a qualitative method to provide an interpretive paradigm on the movie titled “Eighth Grade” (directed by Bo Burnham, 2018). It aims to understand the massive role of the use of social media in shaping the identity of young people. The content analysis of movie “Eighth Grade” was carried out by considering abstraction, explication, and structuring. To understand this phenomenon, this study employed Luyckx's perspective on identity formation theory and the social identity model of deindividuation effect. The results of the research showed that the movie "Eighth Grade" vividly described the process of identity formation in a sequential and comprehensive manner, as well as showcased the occurrence of deindividuation processes in social media activities. It Is suggested that to construct a healthy identity, digital activities should complement offline activities, not replace them.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought various significant impacts on the cultural shift in the society, one of which is the culture of using social media. This is based on the fact that in the Covid-19 pandemic situation there has been a very significant cultural shift in the use of social media, so that in practice, social media culture in the Covid-19 pandemic era has various impacts, both positive and negative impacts. With these various problems, this study aims to look at social media culture in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic from an Islamic perspective. As an effort to answer the problems above, this study uses a literature review with data sources from books, journal articles, and various online newspapers with data analysis methods using content analysis. The findings in this study indicate that the culture of society in the use of social media in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic has experienced a very significant increase. This increase in the view of Islam is supported when humans explore the ability to increase their knowledge and abilities in their fields. On the other hand, if the increasing culture of social media in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic leads people to a crime, then Islam has the consequence of giving a ban.

Abstract

A movement to conserve Gemulo water source conducted by FMPMA group uses cultural values through puppet performance (nanggap wayang) in Bulukerto, Bumiaji and Sidomulyo Villages, Batu City, East Java. Nanggap wayang is used to be a local communication media to inculcate environment conservation values, social movement, and development communication. This research used qualitative method and ethnographic approach aiming to analyze the role and contribution of leather puppet performance (nanggap wayang kulit) on the performance of Gemulo water source conservation movement initiated by FMPMA community and some related society elements. This research employed empirical findings and various literature review references in its analysis. The result of research shows that wayang is still capable of serving as local communication medium for modern community amid massive new media development. Wayang, as local communication medium, provides education, guidance, morality value, and Javanese symbol. The complexity of wayang function also represents collective behavior inculcating Javanese values. Philosophical story of very ecological wayang can enrich the right-on-target and sustainable conservation model. Wayang also becomes effective media of development communication, of change, of socialization, and of education, thereby triggering the development of consciousness and positive feedback from local people (community).

Abstract

Kata kunci: guru, pendidik, profesi, dan aktor sosialAbstractBeing teacher means having double status namely professionals and educators. However, both of status are not only based on didaktic-methodical competence. There are social expectation coming from the society to be ideal people. Thus, professional teachers are not solely oriented to get a job and a decent income, but also has a soul and human consciousness. Although there are lot of training to improve the teaching profession in the various departments of education, most of them are meaningless. This is due to the way of teachers thought which is materislistic. Therefore, the meaning of the teacher as the workers should be shifted in position as social actors who always engage in mutual dialogue with the social reality to formulate solutions toward issue of education. Keywords: teacher, educator, profession, social actor

Abstract

Kata kunci: kritik, perguruan tinggi, budaya akademikAbstractEducation becomes political arena and it is not neutral. Because of education womb will create idealistic or pragmatic people, humanist or dehumanis, tolerant or intolerant, integrity or the critical integrity, and individualist or socialist. Education has a very significant role in the birth and form certain individuals. All of it depends on the basic philosophy and values on which educational institutions are built and what educational praxis developed. A social climate that is built on the campus, is part of the hidden curriculum which also contribute in shaping the personality of academic society. Current phenomenon shows that there is a conflict of interests between ideology in higher education, the contestation between higher education based on academic values (academic values) that tend ethical-utopian and based on the values of the corporation (corporate values) which tends practically. Ideology of interests in education is real conflict of the interests between idealism and pragmatism. Higher education is supposed to be part of the social institutions that contributed to the formation of ethical-democratic society. When higher education loses its critical reason, it was not able to be a lightening for the community, or become agents of social change. But on the contrary, higher education is getting away from the reality in particular society. Keywords: critic, higher education, academic culture

By utilizing several key theoretical ideas including DurkheimŸs Sacred and Profane, BellŸs ritual and ritualization, and WhitehouseŸs modes of religiosity, this paper corroborates the previous findings in the religious and sociological studies that the body plays an important role in the construction of identity, including religious identity such as Muslim identity. This embodied or ritualized body, with its characteristics of formality, fixity, and repetition, constructs, upholds, enforces and maintains Muslim identity through its rituals of salat, sawm, and hajj
