Abstract

The Nigerian Civil War having being heralded by certain avoidable dark clouds which a capriciousl leadership in power at the time failed to mollify eventually resulted to certain catastrophic and mind-boggling consequences. Indeed, no progressive nation would desire to see a repetition of such ugly, cruel and inhuman occurrences. Both individual and community experiences as portrayed in Nwapas Never Again and Adichies Half of a Yellow Sun point to the fact that the sufferings, deaths and anguish occasioned by the war were really enormous and unbearable. Using New Historicism as a critical model, investigations as guided by the two aforementioned war fictions reveal that invaluable talents and potentials were flagrantly wasted, peace a paramount precursor of development gave way to pieces, women and girls were horribly abused and debased in the most animalistic manner, and vital infrastructures were destroyed. Yet the war did not achieve any of the goals for which it broke out - Biafra did not secede; Nigeria is still far from being united as one country still a mere coalition of ethnic nationalities held together by the Van der Waals  forces of federation account and revenue allocation.  Moreover, the dark clouds that resulted to the war are still largely palpable and unaddressed. The paper also explores the consideration of peaceful negotiation and dialogue as a better alternative to conflict resolution rather than bloodshed.

Abstract

Beauty vloggers and viewers become interesting business when cosmetic industry grows rapidly in Indonesia. Digital media are the most significant reason for the global cosmetic production, marketing and consumption reaching global society, especially female students. With limited funds, they should not always watch beauty vlog and buy cosmetics staffs. In facts, they are not aware of being consumers than being owners on beauty and cosmetic products businesses. The objective is to analyze the processes and impacts of the hegemony of beauty vlogger on students consuming cosmetics at Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. We used Antonio Gramsci's hegemony theory. With qualitative approach, we collected data with interview students’ knowledges on cosmetic products and preferable vloggers or actors, observed students watching vlog, and documented membership, consumable beauty products discussion selected by 30 students as viewer/users. The validity of data used triangulation of sources and methods and then analyzed with Miles & Huberman technique. The results showed that the beauty vloggers hegemonize students’ viewers in several strategies: (1) increasing knowledge on cosmetics products and usages, (2) building trust to gain viewer’s sympathy, (3) intensifying communication with viewers, (4) creating local representatives for make-up and beauty, (5) regularly updating cosmetics data, inspiratory beauty creativity, and sale self-confidence. More students become beauty vlog viewers and users than beauty and cosmetic entrepreneurship owners.

Abstract

There's very tough competition in today's business. Supported by a pandemic like what happened today, new Usaha Mikro Kecil Menengah (UMKMs) are increasingly emerging and producing products similar to products made by UMKMs that have started their business first. This situation impacts these UMKMs, where each UMKM must choose the right marketing strategy to increase consumer interest to search for information on products they sell. One of the things that they can do is to do marketing through social media, such as Instagram, which can be in advertisements in the form of videos or advertorials. Proper marketing can increase the interest in seeking information on the product they sell. The concept of AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action), especially in the dimensions of attention and interest, is used in this study. The purpose of this study is to see the effect of video and advertorial advertising forms on interest in information seeking. This research uses quantitative research methods with the type of experiment with the number of respondents as many as 124 people, where 60 people received treatment in the form of advertising in the form of video and 64 other people received treatment in the form of advertising with advertorial form. The results of this study indicate that the form of video ads and advertorials influences information-seeking interest. Video ads have a more significant effect on information-seeking interest than ads with advertorial forms.

Abstract

The internet access blocking to the highly used Social Media platform was a new Indonesian government occurrence. Even though it was for a good purpose and did not block full access, it triggered many protests toward the Government. This study aims to get Indonesian's perspective toward Social Media blocking regarding the reasons, the Government's action, and their readiness if there is no Social Media blocking. Convenience survey sampling was conducted to acquire quantitative and qualitative data among Indonesians. The results indicate that Indonesian favored Social Media blocking if it has clear reasons and not ready if the Government held none of such action. They also demand the Government to provide notification, duration estimation, and guaranteed access to mainstream media. However, they object to Social Media blocking if the motives are regarding freedom of politics, religions, and sexual orientation issues.

Abstract

The transition of political regime in Indonesia during 1995-2004 has implicated the dynamic discourse on gender ideology. It is reflected on the production of sex articles in Hai magazine, the only boys’ lifestyle magazine in Indonesia, for more than three decades. This paper attempts to analyze the sex articles in Hai magazine. Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, we found that the articles of safe and healthy sex socialization portray sex as a pleasing activity for teenage boys. However, sexual pleasure defined by Hai does not refer to Hai’s attempt to promote sexual freedom. This pleasure actually reflects the idea of normative sexuality. It is demonstrated in this scholarly work how the discourse of sexual pleasure produced by Hai magazine became a strategy to promote safe sex. Hence, it is being challenged that the promotion of safe sex strategy is a manifestation of Hai’s compromise toward the contestation of various ideas of sexuality existing in Indonesia in the 1990s and 2000s, during the transition of political regime in Indonesia, including the conservatism and sexual liberalism.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia since March 2020 has tested the Indonesian government's capabilities in various aspects, including public health communication. The existence of communication media both from the Government and the mass media is considered insufficient in providing information related to Covid-19. The advancement of the internet and new media has made social media, especially Instagram, play a vital role in disseminating information related to Covid-19. The information gap that occurs encourages netizens to collaborate to fill it. One of the information volunteers regarding Covid-19 is the Instagram account @pandemictalks, with educational content and criticism of the handling of Covid -19 in Indonesia. This study captures how the discourse on the handling of Covid-19 was put forward by the volunteer account @pandemictalks. This study uses Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis Model, this model dissects discourse not only from the linguistic aspect but also into the social aspect and the context involved in it. This study provides an overview of the various forms of criticism that @pandemictalks conveyed, their production and distribution, social changes that occurred, and related policy changes in them.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has actually forced people to work at home. Office activities outside the home can result in the transmission of COVID-19 to its workers. The government has taken a decision to minimize employee attendance at the office. Employees are encouraged to work at home (WFH), especially in groups vulnerable to infection. The house is turned into an “office space.” With the internet network, these employees are connected to each other. Although factually, this pattern is not a new thing because it has been carried out since the 2000s and is now becoming increasingly intensive. Through qualitative research with an ethnomethodological perspective, the results show that with this pattern, the house has become an encounter between public space and domestic space. This requires a strategy to manage roles in the home. Through in-depth observations and interviews, there were several important findings. First, there is a struggle for space in the house. Second, there is a transfer of stress from work to home. Third, there is a renegotiation of roles in the house, so as not to disturb family harmony. No less important, the community of users of social media and virtual meetings builds constructions of public and domestic space and time. The division of space and time in virtual space is also related to a person's role and social status when in the real world of work.

Abstract

Indonesia is currently facing a new wave of COVID-19 transmission with the number of transmissions rising significantly. The community compliance factor is one of the important things in the spread of the Covid-19 rate. There needs to be intensive warning efforts, including campaigns through social media. This study aims to determine the effect of social media on the level of resilience in rural communities during the covid-19 pandemic. The research sample purposively amounted to 213 people from two research locations, namely Sambong Dukuh Village, Jombang Regency and Wonocoyo Village, Trenggalek Regency, Indonesia. The results showed that the p value = 0.001 < 0.05, which means that social media has a significant effect on the level of community resilience in dealing with the covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, based on the R2 value, the result is 0.421, which means that social media has an influence on the community's resilience level of 42.1%, and the rest are other influences not examined in this study. Based on the results of the t test, it was found that the p value = 0.467 > 0.05, so it can be said that there is no significant difference between the level of resilience in the community in the two villages, even though the average value of Wonocoyo village is 77,393 better than Sambong Dukuh village of 77.00 , but the difference was not statistically significant. The researcher recommends the importance of further research on resilience based on regional characteristics.
